Look out world, Elvin Bishop is back, and he's better--if a little less bigger--than ever. Author Chris Lynch's overweight antihero has slimmed down a bit since his debut in Slot Machine, and has moved from the frying pan of sports camp into the fires of high school. With the help of his two best friends, Frankie and Mike, Elvin prepares to conquer the hormone-drenched horrors of ninth grade. Almost immediately he finds himself dealing with a bad case of hemorrhoids ("No, it doesn't hurt much... run and find me a tree branch that's on fire and I'll show ya"), surviving a traumatizing trip to the Big & Tall men's store, and suffering a close encounter of the heartbreaking kind. But when the going gets tough, at least Elvin knows he can depend on his offbeat mom to empathize--even though her loving advice is often given with more than a few grains of sarcasm.

With this second Elvin tale, Lynch has once again hit the funny bone on the head. Teens (if they can stop giggling long enough) will appreciate his graceful way of making adolescent pain evoke sympathetic chuckles. His hilarious portrayal of the nightmare that is young adulthood ("Young adult. Elvin Bishop, the wisecracking, irrepressible narrator of Slot Machine, is back, and he is just as funny?and perhaps even more likable. Now in his first year at a Catholic boys' high school, the pudgy hero has one scatological misadventure after the next?his battle with hemorrhoids earns him the school nickname of the Velveteen Sphincter; he gets tricked into thinking he has caught a sexually transmitted disease from holding hands with a girl at his first dance; and his hip, widowed mother mistakenly thinks she has caught him masturbating. Some of these gags go too far, especially one subplot involving a pregnant basset hound whom Elvin and his mother have thought to be male during the month they've owned him. But as raunchy or stretched as the humor can get, Elvin himself grows a little more complex as the book progresses. The hormonal high jinks help dress up the book's essentially old-fashioned, tried-and-true theme, which has Elvin rejecting his status-conscious friend's advice to pursue a slim, sought-after beauty and choosing instead to date the plump girl he's attracted to. Witty and knowing, this novel will have readers hoping Lynch writes another Elvin Bishop story soon. Ages 10-up.

Grade 8-10?Elvin Bishop's story, begun in Slot Machine (HarperCollins, 1995), continues, but there is no need to read that book first. Here readers meet Elvin during the opening weeks of his freshman year of high school, a time when his since-kindergarten friendships with Mikie (aka "Dad") and smooth-talking Frankie undergo the tests of each guy's changing perceptions of important. Elvin's widowed mother is always there for her chubby, uncertain son and yet she is, of course, completely willing to embarrass him for his own good. Elvin is smart enough to keep her in ignorance about his hemorrhoids and tentative enough to let her arrange his first official date. Elvin's realization of the value of girls to the species is humorously and credibly threaded throughout the plot but romance isn't the theme here so much as benevolence. Benevolence's shadow is suitably portrayed by evil upperclassmen whose torture repertoire is heavy on threats and insinuations, but also includes extortion and disconcerting applications of petroleum jelly-based salves and alcoholic beverages. This is a funny, insightful, and wholly engaging novel that addresses many of the worst fears of adolescent boys without preaching. It is possible to be just like Elvin and still laugh at his numerous follies. Extreme Elvin is Extremely Funny

Elvin is an overweight kid who is starting high school. Unlike his two best friends Frankie and Mike, he is not prepared for what high school has in store for him. He is overwhelmed by the concept of his weight, meeting girls at the school dance, and the peer pressure of some high school seniors who more or less are feared by everyone in the all boys school. This is a hilariously funny book that shows how Elvin's "relationships" with his best friends and mother (and to-be girlfriend) are unique and special. This is a great read, and anyone in jr. high or high school who has a funny, wise guy sense of humor and is not afraid to laugh out loud should read it.

This book tells it how it is. This is Lynch's best book yet. An extremley funny, overweight teen named Elvin has a hilarious adventure with girls, friends and parties. A must have for all teenagers. You will never put this book away before you're done. I read it and I can relate to almost anything that happened to him. Any Jr. High or High school student will love this book. I recomend this book to everyone. Enjoy!

On the morning of 3 April 1933, two single-engine biplanes set off on a flight into history. From their base near the Indian border with the mystery country of Nepal, the two young pilots, one a British Marquis and a Scottish Member of Parliament, the other a dynamic flight commander, flew towards as great a challenge as world aviation had faced to date - Mount Everest, 'Roof of the World'.

The first flight over Everest was the climax of years of thought and months of intensive planning, an epoch-making event which caught the imagination of millions. News of its success reverberated throughout the British Empire to the world at large. Among the deluge of telegrams of congratulations received were those from the King and the Prime Minister. The Times of London, which had given exclusive coverage of the Expedition since its early days, carried one of its longest features ever and was excited enough to comment that the achievement was 'almost like exploring the rainbow'. Some half-a-century later that Houston-Mount Everest Expedition takes its place as one of the last great pioneering flights before the era of space travel.

Roof of the World tells the remarkable story of that flight and its repercussions, among which were the growth of the British aviation industry and the creation of the country's second international airport. Using rare and unique photographs, many taken from the flight itself and giving an idea of the qualities required of the crews, Lord James Douglas-Hamilton has recreated the scene facing the pilots, one of whom was his father. He has had access to relevant diaries and personal papers presents in Roof of the World a valuable contribution to our understanding of a unique achievement in an eventful decade.

About the Author

Theodore R. Kucklick has extensive experience in the hands-on design and commercial development of medical devices, including radio frequency ablation devices, microwave catheters for minimally invasive therapy, in-home diagnostics devices, surgical closure devices, battery-powered devices, disposables, and general surgery tools. Ted is currently the cofounder, CEO, and CTO for Cannuflow, Inc., an arthroscopic instrument start-up company, and design director for TRKD Medical Device R&D, a medical device design and development company. Ted is the inventor of more than 40 U.S. and international patents, and he is a member of the IEEE/Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the Industrial Designers Society of America, and the Association of Medical Illustrators.

The book you need to enter the medical device industry

I read other medical device related books before but they were more about piling up standards and regulations, which for a freshman of the industry, is boring and not that useful. The book, however, brings in the life experience of medical device development. The language is easy to understand and the author used many daily life examples to illustrate scientific and engineering concepts. The book is written from an entrepreneur's perspective. It listed related companies' and institutes' names, which a reader who is planning on create a startup would really appreciate. I cannot say that I agree with all the political views mentioned in this book but the technical part is awesome. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to enter the medical device R&D world.

I am an orthopeadic surgeon of China. I love to develop new devices, but could find no related book in China. I am lucky to find this book. It is really a good guide to beginner, especially to some physicians, who have little experience in this area.

The Medical Devices R&D Handbook series by author Theodore "Ted" Kucklick fills a very important gap for engineers, managers, and students interested in developing innovative medical devices and/or creating a medical device start-up. Kucklick is a seasoned medical device professional with years of experience in the hands-on design and commercial development of medical devices across multiple engineering and medical specialties. He is also the author of more than 40 US and foreign patents and is a co-founder of a medical start-up.

Kucklick was inspired to write "The R&D Handbook" after he realized that the "tribal knowledge" that existed in the trenches of medical device development was not being effectively communicated within the industry, particularly to younger entrants. We must step up our innovation effort or the US will lose its leadership role. In The American YMCA and Russian Culture, Matthew Lee Miller explores the impact of the philanthropic activities of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) on Russians during the late imperial and early Soviet periods. The YMCA, the largest American service organization, initiated its intense engagement with Russians in 1900. During the First World War, the Association organized assistance for prisoners of war, and after the emigration of many Russians to central and western Europe, founded the YMCA Press and supported the St. Sergius Theological Academy in Paris. Miller demonstrates that the YMCA contributed to the preservation, expansion, and enrichment of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. It therefore played a major role in preserving an important part of pre-revolutionary Russian culture in Western Europe during the Soviet period until the repatriation of this culture following the collapse of the USSR. The research is based on the YMCA’s archival records, Moscow and Paris archives, and memoirs of both Russian and American participants. This is the first comprehensive discussion of an extraordinary period of interaction between American and Russian cultures. It also presents a rare example of fruitful interconfessional cooperation by Protestant and Orthodox Christians.

Miller (history, Northwestern College) has written a valuable study of the YMCA's role in helping to keep Russian Orthodoxy alive and vital during the 20th century. Before WW I, the YMCA, the leading US Protestant movement that sought to teach the Christian faith through youth activities, cooperated with Orthodox clergy and believers to help Orthodoxy adjust to the modernizing winds pushing Russia toward industrialization and land reform. When the communists took power in 1917 and Russian believers fled to western Europe, it was the YMCA that provided financial support to maintain the Orthodox community and to build St. Sergius Theological Academy in Paris, which became the home for Orthodox intellectuals like Sergei Bulgakov, and St. Vladimir's Theological Seminary in New York. Throughout the decades of communist rule, the YMCA backed the isolated Russian Orthodox community and helped it to grow. Mining both Russian and YMCA archives, Miller shows the interdependence and cooperation between the two Christian communities and fittingly hails the YMCA's philanthropy and ecumenism in a time of need. The story of a woman and a powerful family

I enjoy many of Judith/Michael's novels for their fine descriptive writing of various settings and character development. In Possessions, we travel from Vancouver to San Francisco, to the Place des Vosges in Paris and the golden, languid South of France. The theme is building - whether it deals with the Hayward family's construction empire or the elements of what builds or destroys a family.
We first meet Katherine Fraser as a plain housewife caring for her husband Craig and their two children, Todd and Jennifer, in Vancouver. Startling events after the disappearance of her husband lead Katherine to discover Craig's intriguing past that he had since their marriage successfully hidden from her. All of the scandalous press attention associated with Craig's disappearance leads Katherine to the powerful Hayward clan in San Francisco - the family that Craig had left years ago - the family that believed him dead in a tragic sailing accident.
Katherine moves to San Francisco with her reluctant children, still confused over the loss of their husband and father. Both Katherine and the Haywards are immediately wary of each other and after one confontation, Katherine declares that she will survive on her own. With the help of a good friend, she provides for her children and eventually becomes more serious about her hobby of jewelry design. She slowly learns the power of image and knowledge, and how to take control of situations instead of having them control her as they had all her life. The Haywards become curious, and slowly draw her into the family.
Katherine meets Victoria, the matriarch, stern and distinguished; her brother Tobias, the literature professor, with his ever ready supply of quotations and witticisms; dark and foreboding Derek, and kind-hearted Ross whose solid dreams of building towns are demolished by his family that is falling apart. Katherine is shaped by each of her encounters with this wealthy, worldly family. Nonetheless, her own true self emerges, as she rediscovers life, love, and fulfillment.

My favorite Judith Michael book

I have read all of Judith Michael's books and loved them, but this one was my favorite. I had read it years ago and I am planning on reading it again.

Just bought another copy!

I love four of the Judith Michael's books - Deceptions, Inheritance, Posessions and Private Affairs. Every time I loan these books to someone, they beg for more. I just got my copy of "Possessions" back, and I had to buy a new copy, it's so tattered from so many people reading it. And every person I've loaned this book to has loved it.

It's a "I can't put it down" book - the mystery of a wife left suddenly, and then discovering her husband had a whole other life she didn't know about. In the tradition of "Deceptions", it is a fascinating story.

Definitely recommend this book.

About the Author

John D. Walker has fourty-four years of professional academic, industrial and government experience in environmental toxicology and chemistry. Since 1989 he has been Director of the Toxic Substances Control Act Interagency Testing Committee (ITC), The ITC is an independent advisory committee to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Administrator with representatives from 14 U.S. Government organizations. The ITC’s statutory responsibility is to identify industrial chemicals that are likely to harm humans or the environment and recommend them for testing to develop data needed to assess their risks. Prior to being selected as the ITC’s Director John was a senior scientist with the U.S. EPA, a regulatory toxicologist with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, an environmental scientist with Lockheed Martin and a Research Associate at the University of Maryland.

John received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology magna cum laude from Kent State University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He studied microbiology at the University of Dayton where he was elected to Sigma Xi and studied aquatic toxicology at the Ohio State University’s Franz T. Stone Laboratory while earning his Ph.D. His M.P.H. is from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.

John is a Charter Member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), an Emeritus Member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Academy of Microbiology and a former Editor of SETAC’s International Journal, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. John co-authored the Laboratory Manual for Marine Microbiology and edited the book, QSARs for Pollution Prevention, Toxicity Screening, Risk Assessment and Web Applications. He has authored or co-authored 160 peer-reviewed publications and has written 140 abstracts of presentations for national and international professional society meetings. John was the first recipient of the American Fisheries Society/U.S. EPA Science Achievement Award in Biology/Ecology and has been awarded 5 U.S. EPA Bronze medals. He was awarded the U.S. EPA’s Unsung Hero

Award for his work with Special Olympics. John is married with four children and two grandchildren.

Michael C. Newman is currently the A. Marshall Acuff Jr. Professor of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science, where he also served as Dean of Graduate Studies for the School of Marine Sciences from 1999 to 2002. Previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. His research interests include quantitative ecotoxicology, environmental statistics, risk assessment, population effects of contaminants, metal chemistry and effects, and bioaccumulation and biomagnifications modeling. In addition to more than 125 articles, he has authored five books and edited another six on these topics. The English edition and Mandarin and Turkish translations of Fundamentals of Ecotoxicology have been adopted widely as the textbook for introductory Ecotoxicology courses.

He has taught at universities throughout the world, including the College of William and Mary, University of CaliforniaSan Diego, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina, Jagiellonian University (Poland), University of Antwerp (Belgium), University of Hong Kong, University of Joensuu (Finland), University of KoblenzLandau (Germany), University of Technology, Sydney (Australia), Royal Holloway University of London (UK), Central China Normal University, and Xiamen University (China). He has served numerous international, national, and regional organizations, including the OECD, U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board, Hong Kong Areas of Excellence Committee, and the U.S. National Academy of Science NRC. In 2004, the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry awarded him its Founders Award, "the highest SETAC award, given to a person with an outstanding career who has made a clearly identifiable contribution in the environmental sciences."

Monica Enache has thirteen years of professional academic experience in Biology. Since 1999 she has been working at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, Romania. Prior to joining the faculty she has carried out her PhD degree in Liverpool John Moores University (UK), and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Bucharest (Romania). She is currently a member of the National Society of Cell Biology in Romania, and has authored or co-authored then publications and fourteen abstracts for presentations at national or international scientific meetings.
