T. Byram Karasu, M.D., a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, is presently the Silverman Professor and University Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, and the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy. Shallow Monsters

One purchases this book knowing that Dr. Karasu is an eminent psychiatrist and psychotherapist and that he has produced a novel bearing a subtitle - The Culture of Sociopathy - that leads one to believe the story will be informed by the perspective of an experienced clinician. The term used here, "sociopathy", is loosely interchangeable elsewhere with "psychopathy" or "antisocial personality" and refers to individuals who lack remorse or guilt, have shallow emotions, lack empathy, and violate the rights of others in order to achieve their own goals.
The book is dedicated to Christopher Lasch, the historian who published The Culture of Narcicissm in 1979 and "who anticipated the culture of sociopathy". We are prepared therefore for a dystopian take on current affairs: "There was no genuine love, there was no genuine hate, there were only genuine interests - interest in money, success, sex, and power. At the dawn of the second millennium, these excesses and unchecked exaltation of selves were celebrated by all the social, legal, political and financial cuddlings. "
A large cast of characters is introduced from amongst the various "cuddlings" in Manhattan. The characters constitute a rather bewildering array and interact with each other without empathy or deep connection, and therefore fail to induce any sense of empathy in the reader. Although the shallowness of their lives is surely a central theme of the book, it is difficult to develop much interest in the long lists of reprehensible behaviors, or to pause for reflection on hypotheses concerning the formation of such monsters. The characters are simply presented as active but unknowing participants in the sociopathic grind. One longs for biographical digressions, for theoretical subtexts, for the introspective musings found, for example, in Roth or Auster. Everyone is on the make in this story, even the large list of secondary characters such as policemen and the neighbors of the primary characters.
The main character, Mallory, is a beautiful young woman, the product of an alcoholic mother and ineffectual father, and the twin of a more loved and successful sister. Mallory has had psychiatric treatment, wants to be a writer, but supports herself by acting as masseuse or concubine for the wealthier sociopaths of the cast, who are eventually all drawn together by an improbable confluence of drug dealing, prostitution and suspected Islamic terrorism. Although we have some psychological or psychiatric facts about Mallory, she too fails to engage us; even her written reflections are shallow, disorganized and hard to like.
Interestingly, none of the characters take psychotropic medications or visit psychiatrists or psychotherapists. They somehow have escaped the ever enlarging Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and the growing medication of psychological problems in the American public. They are perhaps not capable of self examination and have avoided the contribution of organized psychiatry to the somewhat entitled and passive view that painful emotions can be subdued and that one can be quickly cured by experts bearing pills. One can at least admire them for this, although one wishes that at least one amongst them could achieve some type of insight or wisdom, if not a happy ending.

Highly Recommended!

Byram Karasu's insights and his character studies are intriguing. Drawing from years of professional and praiseworthy experience delving into the recesses of the human psyche, Dr. Karasu manages to draw in both the young and the more seasoned reader. One need only do a quick search of his credentials to be infected with the desire to read a novel written by a true renaissance man. You will not be disappointed.

the return of the mysongynists

This is a heart rending account of how a culture of greed abused, abandoned,killed, and robbed a young woman of everything even her name.. As a last degredation, her former teacher stole her novel and claimed it for himself. It is the tale of mono delusional 22 year old NYU graduate, marijuana supplier, and massage therapist who is converted into a prostitute by her rich male clients and envied by their wives, perhaps even sexually. Every act of kindness she performs is abused until she observes that her 'tits are bleeding' and no one in the end cares, so she ends up decompsed in a trashcan.
It has echos of Fizgerald's Gatsby, when the narrator describes Daisy running over and killing the wife of a gas station attendant who has bed seduced by her boyfriend,Tom, and Gastby gets killed for it. " They were careless people, Tom and Daisy ­ they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made"
and as a Hemingway epitah on those who try to be decent: The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.

missing a chapter

The book is comprehensive on the philosophers and more readable than similar texts. However, the last chapter was missing from my book and it was past the return date at amazon... instead I had 2 copies of the previous chapter. I should get my money back. I missed one assignment in class due to this.

What actually kicks off, of course, is Tasheba herself, whose inaccessible private island off the Maine coast is awash in dead telephones, recorded screams, telltale cufflinks and feather boas, as well as suspects who wonder whether Tasheba's longtime companion Cavender Marsh really killed his wife, Lilith Brayne, back in 1938 in order to spend the rest of his life with her sister. Detection honors go to ex-FBI agent Gregor Demarkian, who spends an awful long time working up to the obvious solution. Good puzzle, disappointing resolution

Gregor Demarkian, retired FBI agent and administrator, accompanies Bennis Day Hannaford to the one hundredth birthday of a distant cousin. The cousin is a reclusive silent-film star; her husband, a star of a slightly later vintage. They were the toast of their age and the center of a tragedy and scandal. Now they must celebrate Tasheba Kent's century by auctioning some of their prized mementos.

The colors of the party are both gaudy and ghastly, yet this reader felt that the whole story was set in black and white, grey and silver, limelight and (mostly) shadow. Creepy collectors and angry relatives take their places stage right and left as the recluses' Victorian hideaway is cut off from the world by a storm. And then the murders begin.

I found the puzzle satisfying, especially in the roles played by various characters. The solution felt right, but the resolution disappointed me. It might be reasonable in real life and it might not, but it didn't feel like a Gregor Demarkian story, perhaps because he had no part to play in restoring the balance of justice.

On the strength of the puzzle, I give One To Die On four stars. I could justify giving it only three, but I recommend it for its strong parts: a multilayered puzzle in which the deaths are themselves clues and for the atmosphere. The extravegant special effects and the out-of-control resolution can disappoint, but they don't weaken a very strong set-piece.

100th. birthday of an aging screen star

Tasheba Kent has decided to celebrate her 100th. birthday by inviting people to her home for an auction of her memorabilia. She invites a diverse group which includes her lawyer, her accountant, a reporter, her daughter, and a collector of movie souvenirs. The auction seems strange because Tasheba and her husband Cavender have been recluses on a remote island off the coast of Maine for many years. Among the guests are writer Bennis Hannaford and her friend Gregor Demarkian, an ex-F.B.I. agent. The presence of Demarkian seems to make some of the guests nervous, and some of them appear to have secrets to hide. There is a severe storm which traps the guests on the island and soon dead bodies begin to appear. As in Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians", the people on the island begin to fear one another. Demarkian, however, has the solution to the murders all figured out, and eventually he shares his findings with the guests. Haddam is a good writer, and she creates interesting characters in a foreboding setting. There are a few points of the plot which don't make much sense, but all in all, this is a a good read.

A great read

What a great read. I am so happy I tumbled onto author Jane Haddam. This is my second of her Gregor Demarkian novels and I am now going to go back to book one and read them in order.
What could be more intriguing? Bennis is invited to the 100th birthday of silver screen great, Tasheba Kent, who lives on a small secluded island off the coast of Maine with another silver screen legend, Cavender Marsh, a cousin of Bennis'. And, of course, when Bennis goes, Gregor goes along . . .
It seems Cavender was once married to Tasheba's sister (another screen legend from the 30s), and after her questionable death moved to the Maine island and isolation with Tasheba. The birthday party guests are a different lot (and include Cavender's estranged daughter from his marriage to Tasheba's sister)and once they are all on the island strange things start happening, starting with the first murder.
Who done it? A reviewer should never tell. In the case of this book, I was glad it was who it was--and I had a great time getting there.

About the Author

Dr. J. Paul Chen is an associate professor of environmental engineering at the National University of Singapore. His research interests are physicochemical treatment of water and wastewater and modeling. He has published more than 100 journal papers and book chapters with a citation count of more than 2,500 and an H-index of 28. Professor Chen is also the co-editor of Heavy Metals in the Environment (CRC Press, 2009). He holds seven patents in the areas of sorption technologies, ballast water management, and exhaust gas treatment. Professor Chen has received various honors and awards, including guest professor of the Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology and Shandong University of China, and Distinguished Overseas Chinese Young Scholar of National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has been recognized as an author of highly cited papers (chemistry and engineering) of ISI Web of Knowledge. Professor Chen received his master’s in engineering from the Tsinghua University of Beijing and his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

The second edition has retained the valuable information contained in the first edition. The present editors and authors have extensively revised and augmented the content to bring it completely up to date, adding significantly to the sections on unsaturated soil mechanics and expanding the range and number of instructive case histories. About the Author

Geoffrey Blight completed his PhD at Imperial College, London, on the mechanics of unsaturated soils, under the supervision of the legendary Alan Bishop. His early work, published jointly with Bishop in 1960, 1961 and 1963, provided data that is still being used by new generations of researchers on unsaturated soil behaviour. He soon became interested in residual soils, publishing his first work on unsaturated residual soils in 1963. He served as Chairman of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering’s Technical Committee on the Properties of Tropical and Residual Soils from 1994 to 1997 and edited and co-authored the book "Mechanics of Residual Soils", produced during his Chairmanship.

Eng-Choon Leong is an Associate Professor at School of Civil Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees at the National University of Singapore and a PhD at the University of Western Australia. He has eighteen years of research and teaching experience in Geotechnical Engineering. His research interests are unsaturated soils, residual soils, soil dynamics, foundation engineering and numerical modeling. He has published widely in international journals and conferences. He has extensive experience in laboratory and field testing of saturated and unsaturated soils and in-situ monitoring of residual soil slopes. He has also developed a number of specialized laboratory testing apparatuses and data acquisition systems for field applications. He is also active in consultancy and national technical committees on standards. He has received several awards for his contribution to the accreditation of commercial soil testing laboratories and is a co-author of the ASTM Outstanding Article on the Practice of Geotechnical Engineering awarded in 2006.

Michael L. Mark is Emeritus Professor of Music at Towson University, where he served as Dean of the Graduate School. Previously, he was head of the music education program at The Catholic University of America.

I've never seen a book with so many typos!

So far, there has been at least one typo in every article - and when each article is only 1-4 pages long, that's a lot of typos! Further, Mark cut out huge chunks from a number of the articles that were in the previous edition. They've been edited to the point of being of little value. There are still some nuggets that are worthwhile, but this edition isn't nearly as good as the one it's replacing.

Source Readings that are beneficial to all Music Educators.

I used this book for a graduate course this past summer and found the book to be inspiring and helpful to understanding Music Education on a grand scale. Having the use of source readings coupled with a historical text helped in the synthesis of the American Music Education landscape. I would state each source is not perfect nor would it be when you are reading historical writings from authors who have since passed away. Michael Mark has provided Music Educators with a one stop shop of great sources of inspirational and story telling documents that other historical textbooks leave behind.

About the Author

Sanjay Govindjee is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (1993-2006, 2008-present). His main interests are in theoretical and computational mechanics with an emphasis on micromechanics, shape memory alloys, and elastomers. Prior to joining Berkeley he worked as an engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1991-1993) in Livermore, California. He was also Professor of Mechanics (2006-2008) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Noteworthy honours include a National Science Foundation Career Award, the inaugural 1998 Zienkiewicz Prize and Medal, an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship, a Berkeley Chancellor's Professorship 2006-2011, and a guest Professorship at ETH Zurich 2008-2013.

Awesome book

Very well-written, concise, easy-to-read, yet full of detail and theory when needed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a solid grasp on introductory solid mechanics.
