The Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, are commonly grouped together by their close historic, linguistic, and cultural ties. Beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century and continuing until the 1920s, hundreds of thousands left Scandinavia to begin life in the United States and Canada. Sweden had the greatest number of its citizens leave for the United States, with more than one million migrating between 1820 and 1920. Per capita, Norway was the country most affected by the exodus; more than 850,000 Norwegians sailed to America between 1820 and 1920. In fact, Norway ranks second only to Ireland in the percentage of its population leaving for the New World during the great European migration. Denmark was affected at a much lower rate, but it too lost more than 300,000 of its population to the promise of America. Once gone, the move was usually permanent; few returned to live in Scandinavia. Michigan was never the most popular destination for Scandinavian immigrants. As immigrants began arriving in the North American interior, they settled in areas to the west of Michigan, particularly in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, and North and South Dakota. Nevertheless, thousands pursued their American dream in the Great Lakes State. They settled in Detroit and played an important role in the city’s industrial boom and automotive industry. They settled in the Upper Peninsula and worked in the iron and copper mines. They settled in the northern Lower Peninsula and worked in the logging industry. Finally, they settled in the fertile areas of west Michigan and contributed to the state’s burgeoning agricultural sector. Today, a strong Scandinavian presence remains in town names like Amble, in Montcalm County, and Skandia, in Marquette County, and in local culinary delicacies like æbleskiver, in Greenville, and lutefisk, found in select grocery stores throughout the state at Christmastime.

Better for advanced users of Flash and After Effects, but still useful to the less experienced.

Focal Press has long been known for its releases on photography and cinematography and now more and more digital photography and video. I don't think I've ever acquired a Focal Press book that I'd call "bad". Some were boring, but that's a matter of taste.

Adobe Flash CS5 and Adobe After Effects are both enormously powerful tools and each has a very steep learning curve. But each one, in competent hands, is capable of producing truly mind-blowing effects. Chris Jackson shows how using Flash and After Effects together can take your production to a wholly new level, using After Effects to introduce broadcast features into your Flash creations.

This is not a book for the timid, the lazy or the inexperienced.

As Jackson points out, he assumes his readers have prior Flash experience and I would say the more the better. Jackson lets it go with pointing out the readers should understand the Flash workspace, which is not a simple environment, an understanding of animation concepts (I would suggest not only an understanding, but some animation experience as well) and know basic Actionscript. Actionscript is not a trivial language.

Jackson says his book "provides an introduction to After Effects, its workspace and tools". In a way what Jackson provides is a quick tour of a Boeing 747: you'll know where the tires are, but not how to start the engines, much less get the plane in the air. As Jackson says: "The book does not necessarily show the reader what all the tools do; rather, it shows how to use them to enrich Flash animation and interactive projects".

And that it does: you cannot read this book without your imagination catching fire. The question is whether or not you'll ever be able to create any of the effects in this book, much less others.

The answer is yes, if you are already experienced with Flash and After Effects. If you are, not all that much in this book will be unfamiliar to you.

If, on the other hand, you are just emerging from the total neophyte stage and are a diligent student willing to devote yourself to following the many exercises, you're going to learn a ton of new tricks that will help you create more engaging Flash presentations.

In ten densely packed, but clearly written chapters, Jackson walks the reader through the After Effects workspace, exporting from Flash to After Effects and the reverse, interactive video, alpha channels, type in motion, 3D effects in After effects, charcter animation, visual effects and optimization and encoding.

This is not simple stuff. But If you have somewhat better than minimal experience level with Flash and a willingness to learn After Effects (if you don't already know it), this book will present you with lots of new ideas. But it is not for the faint hearted and total beginners might be well advised to gain more experience before tackling this.

Creative inspirations on combining Flash & After Effects

When I saw this book it immediately captured my eye because these are 2 of my more favorite software's on the market. I have often tweaked footage in after effects that I later used in flash projects. However, I never used the 2 programs together much more extensively than that. I was looking forward to some creative inspirations on ways I could better utilize the 2 together. I was not disappointed. I should also note that this book indicates when certain features are relevant to CS5 versions of the software (so this book is up to date!)

Who is it for?
This book is written from the perspective of the flash animator who is looking to enhance their projects by adding after effects to their projects. However, in later chapter the author also shows how Flash content can be utilized in your after effects projects too. The early chapters of the book explain how to use After effects and how to import/export footage between these 2 applications. If you do not know after effects these chapters will be particularly useful to you!

Chapters I found useful!
One chapter that was particularly useful to me in my professional life was the section on using after effects to set up cue points on the video so that you can later create interactive flash triggers at that cue points. This is something I have done in the past but to a limited extent. Another section I found highly interesting was creating 3D interactive environments using these 2 apps together. This section on 3D to me was the inspiration I was looking for in this book to push my creativity further. I definitely never used these 2 software's together in that way in the past. The author shows how to build the full 3D environment in after effects and how to set up the camera then later showing how to get everything into flash and making all the elements fully interactive.

Other topics covered:
Puppeting:
The author also shows some cool information on using bones in flash to animate characters. He also uses the puppeting tools in after effects, which is similar to flash bones, to also show how to animated characters in AE as an alternative. He then combines the knowledge by showing how to make a fully interactive puppet in flash.

Animated text and effects:
He also delves into solid ideas on how to create nice animated type in after effects. This is usually one of the 1st things most people learn when they get to know after effects. Its always cool to see all the things you can do with a text layer in after effects when you are new to the app. For those that are not after effects experienced, he shows many of those slick common tricks that really do put some "wow factor" to your videos. Example: "Light zoom" effect or animated written text.

After Effects "Effects"
Lastly, he has a section on special effects that can be utilized bi-directionally between the 2 applications. For example playing with after effects "fractal noise" to generate fire and fog elements. Also, CC Snow effect for making snow. These are all simple layer effects, but you can generate nice little addons to your flash animations. With this knowledge you could easily spice up the quality of your flash animations and make them look a lot more professional. Also, with this kinda of knowledge you don't need to purchase stock video footage for special layer effects in your flash projects, you can just make them easily yourself.

Final Thoughts
If you are someone who likes both of these software's or wants to find new ways to push your flash animations further, this book would be ideal for you. This may not be your typical "read book A" to "learn software X" book. However, this book still does a good job teaching both software's and writing it from the perspective that would be approachable by people of all levels. (pros and students)

Students in school working in multi-media who have exposure to both application, this book would be ideal for them. Not only to learn from, but also give them more tools to make some great projects for their portfolio.

For professionals who enjoy keeping a fresh open mind to learning and creative ideas it may serve to inspire (which is how this book was helpful to me!).. and who knows you may learn some new tricks along the way too.. I know I did!

Excellent title for multimedia projects

Another great title from Focal Press. I have not been disappointed with any Focal Press title. As others have mentioned this is primarily intended for intermediate to advanced users, but I think motivated beginners could use this title also. I tend not like to buy software version specific books, but I'm glad I bought this title. It's been very helpful.

After a prolific career as an author and interior designer, Stoddard settles into a medium of contemplation in this, her twentieth, book. Surrounded by quotations to aspire to, she luxuriates in the words and intellectualism that comprise our space--but not without some practicality. The heady abstracts of proportion and scale, symmetry and space, pattern and rhythm (among other concepts), become visual and tangible through her examples, explorations, and exercises. There is a discussion about mantels, arrangements, and the horror of too much symmetry. Yet concrete "things to achieve" appear to be important, too. Scattered groups of exercises help us make real the ideas of forms and patterns. And absolute assignments, such as lining wastepaper basket bottoms with white doilies, make a great deal of sense. A true teaching book

I borrowed this book from the library, and having finished it, I'm now going to buy it so I can keep referring to it. This is the first "decorating" book among the many I've read that really explained decorating/design principles rather than beguiling me with photos (although I liked her photos, too, especially the attic retreat). I was interested to read another reviewer's comment that Ms. Stoddard was talking down to her readers. Several years ago I thought that too when I read "Creating a Beautiful Home." I remember feeling resentful and thinking, "Oh, sure, if you have money..." In this book, however, I came to understand that she's not dwelling on what you spend on things but rather things you can do to enhance your daily life that don't depend on money. I particularly appreciated the exercises Ms. Stoddard gave and her anecdotes about her own teacher. And her explanation of the Golden Mean is the clearest I've ever read.

A pleasant experience

I really like the way Mrs.Stoddard writes, very clear, simple and full of delightful details for the readers to understand what she means. You don't have to have a lot of money to live a beautiful life, just commonsense, beauty thoughts and a will to truly express yourself in your everyday life. This book, like all the others that I've read written by her, were a delight to read and a very good guide for those who want to improve their day-to-day life, paying more attention to minor details that really make a difference. Congratulations, Mrs.Stoddard, on your words, your thoughts shared with us, the way you put the words, tha quotations that you use as examples, the presentation of the books.I'm a big fan of yours and if I have the opportunity one day, I'll attend one of your lectures. Thank you for sharing your ideas with all of us.

A disappointing purchase

I just received my book and spent an hour or so perusing it. I wanted so much to love it and be inspired-but I don't and I'm not. The author comes off as a patronizing snob instead of the warm friend I was expecting. Instead of sharing positive experiences with readers, she clearly sees herself as above them. Even her language is pretentious. When writing of the kitchen, she refers to the "larder" and the "buttery." Puh-LEEZE. The book contains only eight photos -- all of her own uninspiring rooms. It's not that there aren't ideas here-there are many good ones in between the ridiculous tips. It's just that the over-all tone rarnges from off-putting to simply boring.

Myra, the daughter of real estate heir Clark and Zulime Carrière, a beautiful young Frenchwoman, was raised by friends of Clark and kept ignorant of her real parentage until 1832, when she discovered her true lineage in letters among her foster father's papers. She thereupon returned to Louisiana with tales of a lost will and a secret marriage between Clark and Carrière and claimed to be Clark's missing heir. Was Myra the legitimate daughter of the prominent merchant or the "fruit of an adulterous union?" The courts would decide.

The Great Gaines Case wound its tortuous path through the United States legal system from 1834 until 1891. It was considered by the U.S. Supreme Court seventeen times and pursued even after Gaines's death by lawyers trying to recoup fees. By courageously bringing her case to the courtroom and doggedly keeping it there, Alexander asserts, Gaines helped instigate a new type of family law that provided special protection of women, children, and marriages.

Though Gaines never recovered more than a tiny fraction of the rumored millions, this riveting chronicle of her struggle for legitimacy and legacy as told by Elizabeth Urban Alexander is a gold mine for anyone interested in legal history, women's studies, or a good yarn superbly spun.

Myra Clark Gaines was 25 and about to be married when she discovered that the couple who had raised her were not her birth parents and that she was the daughter of one of the richest men in America, Daniel Clark. Thus began Myra's lifelong involvement with the courts, as she sought to prove her claim as a legitimate heir to her father's fortune. Her suit hinged on her status under Louisiana law; if she were "legitimate," then she would be entitled to four-fifths of her father's very considerable holdings. She need not have been born in wedlock a paternal declaration would do unless she were an "adulterous bastard," the product of a union in which at least one partner was married to someone else. Her claim was vigorously opposed by the executors of Clark's will, acting on behalf of his heirs. The stage was set for more than 50 years of litigation in which Myra played the role of heroine of a sentimental romance and gained the sympathy of a nation. This southern Louisiana Bleak House came to a predictable end: Myra recovered a tiny portion of the original millions and left her own heirs to split $60,000, a sum still being litigated years after her death. Alexander's painstakingly researched and documented account fully explores every facet of the affair; however, whether Myra represents a heroic woman transgressing 19th-century legal boundaries or merely another obsessed and combative heir is less certain.

Superb Scholarship, Great Story, Important Book

I was unaware of the Gaines case until I stumbled over some stuff relating to it while working on another project involving New Orleans and financial history. A lucky find. This is a superior work of careful historical scholarship that is grounded in a massive investigation of primary sources. The angle is interesting: if Ms Gaines makes her case, the legitimacy of more than a few important property titles goes up in smoke, and the parties affected--including those who interest me--were some of the wealthiest people in the antebellum South. So Gaines, whose legitimacy is at issue, becomes the outsider who has to face down the power, money, and connections of an established elite. Not only is the story good, I found myself picking up relevant details about the city and its economic life that have changed my thinking about a few matters, including a technical one. So what more can you ask for? A good story, a frisson of prurience, and a thoroughly professional job. In light of the discovery and verification of Richard III in England, the thought occurs--DNA testing? No descendants? I can see from other comments there are. Suppose Ms Gaines was correct about her ancestry and the skullduggery that led to its concealment?

A Real-life Soap Opera!

Sometimes is the truth is stranger than fiction! This is certainly the case with Notorious Woman: The Celebrated Case of Myra Clark Gaines. This book had everything I wanted -- scandalous family secrets, an heir fighting for legitimacy, a struggle through the courts, even a murder -- AND, it's all true! The author re-tells the drama as it unfolded in the courtroom and lets you come to your own conclusion: Was Myra Clark Gaines the true heir to a New Orleans real estate fortune worth millions? You decide.

It's fascinating to re-read my ancestoral history from a historian's perspective. Having heard the "filtered" versions passed down through my family, it was wonderful to get a different account of the events. It's a great read, well put together and was definitely enjoyed!

By the end of the 1940s, Eleanor’s name was being bandied about for positions like governorships, the U.S. Senate, and even the Vice Presidency, which was still completely unprecedented for a woman in those times.

So what exactly are you getting for your money, you ask?

Been scooping up these Charles River Editors products for the past two years and own over 175+ titles if that says anything. I find that I enjoy history most when it is brief, concise and includes images which this book does indeed. Comparing this book in particular with "An Interactive Biography of [only] Eleanor Roosevelt for Kids" , "An Interactive Biography of [only] Franklin Roosevelt for Kids" and "An Interactive Biography of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt for kids" here's what I've found:

1) The book of Eleanor Roosevelt for kids and Franklin Roosevelt for kids includes same passages, media and images as found in "An Interactive Biography of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt for kids" so something to keep in mind if purchasing separately
2) The book of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt for kids is an even more condensed version of "An Interactive Biography of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt [general]" making it more suitable for young children as photos pop up more frequently given lower page count so as to retain their interest

This is a book on photography and seeing, not just for those who capture and create images, but also for those who use them and write about them. Richard Zakia has a way of writing about photographs that is practical and relevant to how we see things.
With many examples of important photographs, paintings and advertisements, he reminds us that we don't often see all that there is to see. Instead, we tend to limit ourselves to seeing what we expect to see, thus missing the richness of many photographs.

Take, for example, my photograph of "Push”, which is on the cover of Zakia's book. One might look at it and dismiss it as just another photograph of a trash can on a beach. But read what he had to say about it. You will be surprised and delighted by what you will learn and be able to apply to your own photography.

About the Author

Dr. Richard D. Zakia, Ed.D., Professor Emeritus at Rochester Institute of Technology, taught in many areas of photography and served as the chair of the Fine Art Photography Department and Graduate Program in Imaging Arts. He was the recipient of the Eisenhart Outstanding Teaching Award and the author/co-author of twelve books on photography, including The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography, Teaching Photography, Photographic Composition: A Visual Guide, and his final book, the 4th edition of Perception and Imaging.

Perception and Imaging: Photography--A Way of Seeing

If you've ever looked at your picture, then compared it to someone else's and found yours a little lacking, this may be the book for you. Dr. Zakia's book explains the science behind the visual. There are examples to help make your visuals more appealing or use the science to manipulate the viewer.

The book is not strictly a photography book. It is primarily a book about how the brain perceives lines, shadows, colors, placements, repetitions, groupings, contours, negative space, etc. to enhance a visual element or, at times, show something that doesn't exist at all, or show how we don't see all there is to see.

As a novice visual arts experimenter, I found the book to be extremely interesting although some topics are beyond my scope (at this point); however, I think that I will "grow" into the chapters I don't currently understand. I have learned many things that I am currently using in my photography.

The book starts with basic design and continues with illustrating a broad scope of perceptual concepts, clearly explaining each. After viewing a picture and reading the explanation, I would often find that I didn't see everything, or saw the wrong thing, or be "tricked" into see something that wasn't there. For example, page 176 shows a woman's split face. Upon reading the verbiage, you find that the face isn't split at all. On page 167, a change in the angle of the photo changes the perceived placement of items.

Not only is this a good book for people creating visuals, it provides a good understanding to those that appreciate photography, paintings, and advertising. Don't always believe what you see.

This book gets right down to the fundamentals of perception and aesthetics. Much broader than just photography. A must for any visual artist who is seeking a basic understanding of perception to assist his creativity.

Not for beginners....or anyone trying to learn how to make a photo.

I was searching for a text book for an upcoming college level digital photography course. While some of the principals taught are valid, this book is a compilation of many thoughts and essays from the past 40 years of "over thinking" the imaging process. The proof is in the boring, almost horrible images displayed throughout the book. I'm afraid this book would un-inspire and turn off more aspirants than assist. I was confused by this author 40 years ago in college, and now, after 34 years of being a full-time professional photographer, it's still a mish-mash of concepts. This text needs serious distilling and a focus on the learner.

Great book about talk radio conservatives that even liberals would enjoy.

This book was informative, but still an easy light read with great anecdotes about some of my favorites like Glenn Beck, but also the early guys like Bob Grant and Barry Farber who laid the groundwork.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. It's not really political, it's primarily a good historical account of talk radio from it's beginnings. It also discusses the Fairness Doctrine. Very informative, interesting and definitely worth reading.

After hearing about this book on the Mark Levin Show,I ordered it and was very impressed. This is the best book I've read in years. If you like talk radio and would like some insight into it's past and future, you'll love this book. As Barry Farber said on his show, "Fred's the only one to get it right". Not only, is it a well researched, accurate history of talk radio but it's also fun to read. I couldn't put it down till I read the last word.
