Andy Stanley... enough said

This was my introduction to Andy Stanley and My wife and I are already trying to pick a new series. This particular series is a great video for a youth class all the way to Sr adults. Has small group 20 minute or less video clips or you can watch the entire session which is just a little longer and contains a good bit more material. We realized very early on that we really didn't need the study guide but it was nice to have for the questions. We will probably let our youth minister borrow this for his teenagers for the lessons on relationships, finances, and peer pressure, etc. Such a great intro into refining your Christian lifestyle closer to God's word. We have already made changes in our life and are looking at so many things differently. Couldn't recommend this series more :)

Great discussions!

Our adult Sunday School class did this study and enjoyed it and learned so much. Andy Stanley is a dynamic speaker whose teachings are Biblically sound. The topics were relevant and generated great conversations. He even mixes in some great humor to keep it interesting and lively.
I/we would recommend this study to adults of all ages.

Andy Stanley does a great job of explaining Biblical principles and how to apply these principles to your life. He is a wonderful teacher and I highly recommend this study! (I've also participated in his Staying in Love and Taking Responsibility for Your Life studies and they were excellent as well.)

It's Okay to Be Different!

I am so happy to have found this series of books for my 3rd grade son! We both loved this book. It is funny, with great illustrations. It also has a fabulous message! I highly recommend it for your school-age kids.

Franny K. Stein is an unusual little girl. Rather than dollies and horsies and flowers, Franny loves bats and tarantulas and poison ivy. Her lunches were a bit different too! But like other little girls, Franny needs friendship. In order to make friends, Franny experiments with being someone she is not (the stereotypical little girl), but is unhappy. When she is herself, she finds that her new friends like her just as well or better! In the end, we learn that even if friends don't always like the same things, they can still be friends.

Cute Start to An Enjoyable New Book Series for Young Readers

Franny K. Stein isn't your normal little girl. She's a mad scientist. And a weird one at that. When she jump ropes she uses her pet snake, and as opposed to daisies, Franny likes to pick poison ivy. Everyone at school is afraid of Franny, for she's different than the rest of them, and they find that weird. So Franny decides to create an experiment that will change her from being the weird little girl who everyone stares at, to one who fits in. But then a Giant Monstrous Fiend attacks Franny's class, and she knows that she must convert back to being a mad scientist to save the day.

In this first book in the FRANNY K. STEIN: MAD SCIENTIST series we are introduced to a crazy, wacky young girl, who loves everything out of the ordinary. Her personality and quirks are unique, and her adventures are entertaining. Jim Benton has done a marvelous job in creating an enjoyable new book series for children, whose content and illustration will mesmerize even the most reluctant reader.

"It's Mad Science Time"

This chapter book entertains in so many more ways than I expected that this review is going to sound a little gushy. But the Franny K. Stein books are just that good.

Franny is a devoted mad scientist, but she scares her classmates. She transforms herself into a girlie-girl in order to "fit in", but somehow that doesn't feel right to her. NO SPOILERS, but events unfold in a way that leads Franny, and her classmates, to appreciate Franny for who she really is.

The book is perfectly manageable for a new chapter book reader, but it is loaded with all sorts of subtle and clever jokes that are really pretty sophisticated. There are slippery little jokes, (Franny's supportive and understanding teacher is Ms. Shelly; any relation to the Mary Shelley who wrote "Frankenstein"?). There are nods to old creature features, (O.K., who put "unstable industrial waste" in the classroom trash can?). There is a lot of wordplay and loads of sharp, deadpan humor.

This is just a wonderful example of how you can write a book that is funny and entertaining for a seven year old and yet just as amusing and diverting for an adult who is reading along with that youngster. And there are many other bonuses. There is no lame or simple-minded fart/booger humor. (Actually a scene involving a kid who wets his pants during the monster crisis is honestly funny.) Franny is a dedicated mad scientist, but is a happy, well-adjusted, bright, thoughtful and friendly kid. She's not spoiled or bratty or precocious. The book is heavily illustrated, and the drawings are clever and funny, and support and enhance the story.

The entire tone and feel of this book is very engaging. It has a message, but the message about being yourself just fits seamlessly into the story. The writing has a conversational feel that is not twee or too-chatty or cutesy. Indeed, the deadpan matter-of-factness of the narrative both sells the story and helps with readability.

So, you get a likeable kid, a fun story, an upbeat message, some excitement and a lot of laughs. I can easily understand the appeal of this book as an early chapter reader.

Drawing on Ellison’s recently published “unfinished” novel, newly released archival materials, and unpublished correspondence, Parrish provides a sustained reconsideration of the writer’s crucial friendships with Richard Wright, Robert Penn Warren, and C. Vann Woodward to show how his life was dedicated to creating an American society in which all could participate equally. By resituating Ellison’s career in the historical context of its making, Parrish challenges the premises that distorted the writer’s reception in his own lifetime to make the case for Ellison as the essential visionary of post–Civil War America.

The Advantage Over Video Tutorials

I am a Video Editor and After Effects Artist, but while I did study After Effects in college, I never used it in my career until recently. At my job, I was given tasks that required minimal After Effects knowledge. However, recently, I have been put to the task of more complicated work. Each time, I have been able to find a tutorial and seek help on forum boards or from co-workers. However, I really am tired of that. When I am given an advanced project, I am stressed, seeking an answer sometimes through the night or weekend. I am embarrassed to have to ask co-workers, and sometimes a tutorial does not address an issue that's tripping me up. So I seriously considered giving up on After Effects, but almost everyone wants an editor who knows After Effects now.

In college, this book was our textbook. Now as a working professional, I have purchased it again for myself. But now, there are a ton of After Effects VIDEO tutorials. I have gone through the Essentials training on Lynda.com and Total Training. Those are as close to a textbook as you will find, but they are fundamental. For cool stuff, I love Video Copilot, AE Tuts and others. But what I have found is that those tutorials to do 'cool' things are simply 'watch what I can do' videos by the artists.

This book is so detailed that I understand why it was a textbook in college. You really LEARN After Effects. I am now at a place where I am not going to watch some tutorial, make some eye candy motion graphic and toss it on my reel as if I am at a level I'm not at. I now want to really learn the ins and outs of this app, and this book will do that.

I advise those who are anxious to jump on YouTube and follow someone's advanced video tutorial, then claim to know After Effects to sloooow down. If you are actually serious about learning it, get serious and read this book thoroughly. Read the boring stuff, because it's those basics that will help you troubleshoot. Most video tutorials do not address many issues that you'll need to troubleshoot unless the instructor experiences that problem while he's recording.

In 2010, I thought that this book was too thick, and I didn't have time for it. A year later, I realize I could have finished this book by now. So in 2011, I am starting again from the top. If I come up on advanced tasks along the way, I will skip ahead for that task, but return to where I left off later because now I am serious about really, really learning After Effects. And this is THE book to learn from. It takes a while to read vs. watch, but just do it. In the time you would read a novel or watch TV, read this book instead and enhance your knowledge.

Everything there is to know about AE

I'm new to AE. As anyone who has tried to use AE (or just about any Adobe product) knows, there are way too many features for anyone to be able to just sit down and figure the program out on your own which is what I had been doing before I came across this book. I totally agree with the authors' remarks in the introduction that they have "crammed in numerous Tips, Gotchas, and Factoids... as well as [warnings] about situations where [a given feature] will not work". The book has over 700 pages and I still think "crammed" is a good word. I have yet to find a page that could have been left out due to lack of interesting content.

As a new user, I really appreciate the sample projects that are included because I, like most people, learn best by DOING. For the same reason, I appreciate the wealth of screen shots. For newbies like myself, it is important to read the book from beginning to end and not skip around because many of the chapters assume you have already read the previous material and do not re-explain things (and that's a good thing, really). As I've already mentioned, it's a very large book, so I have quite a bit to go, but my understanding of AE grows deeper by the page. Thank you to the Meyers for helping me use this program. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some more reading to do...

Great Book. Loads of material.

This is without a doubt the best motion graphics book there is. This takes you though the many different tools of After Effects and shows examples on how to use them. It's pricey, but worth it. A very through guide to say the least. It also comes packed with a DVD of extras which are great, and not just fluff. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Bryan Lask trained at the University of London and was a consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry at Great Ormond Street Hospital for 25 years. There, with Rachel Bryant-Waugh, he initiated the first early onset eating disorders programme in the UK. Subsequently he has written 11 books and over 200 papers. He is Past-President of the Eating Disorders Research Society and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Rachel Bryant-Waugh is Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Joint head of the Feeding and Eating Disorders Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health, University College London. She obtained a PhD from the University of Sussex investigating children with eating disorders, and trained as a clinical psychologist in London. She has specialised in feeding and eating difficulties in children for many years, has taught and published widely in this field and is an internationally respected expert. She is recipient of the 2012 Academy for Eating Disorders Leadership Award for Clinical, Educational and Academic Service.

John Gerlach earned a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Ecology from Central Michigan University in 1977. He has earned his living as a professional nature photographer since 1980. Rather than photographing subjects that might sell well in the marketplace, he prefers to pursue subjects that interest him the most. He often photographs subjects that are not well known such as the Black Rosy-Finch which appeared on the front cover of the October 2000 issue of BIRDING. His photographs have been published in every major national magazine that uses nature photographs including NATIONAL WILDLIFE, SIERRA, NATURAL HISTORY, PETERSEN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC, RANGER RICK, BIRDER'S WORLD, MICHIGAN NATURAL RESOURCES, and AUDUBON. OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER and POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY have published his instructional articles about nature photography on several occasions. His nature photos are showcased in calendars produced by Hallmark, Kodak, Sierra Club, Argus, Browntrout, Abbeville Press, and many others. Perfect

For those who want to learn the basics of landscape photography, this is the perfect book.

The authors have not just assembled all the information necessary for a new digital photographer to produce good landscape photography. The authors present it clearly, simply and lucidly so the readers will have no difficulty understanding the lessons. Moreover, they have organized the information on each topic so that even if the reader has missed a point earlier in the book, he will be reminded again further on.

The ten chapters in the book cover necessary equipment, exposure, sharp focusing, the effect of light, and composition. There is a chapter on special subjects that covers techniques that range from photographing from a kayak to making images of fall foliage. There are even two chapters on the newest darlings of the landscape set, high dynamic range photography (HDR) and panoramas. The book is nicely illustrated with the authors' photographs.

The chapter on exposure is typical of the book. After explaining the factors of aperture, shutter speed and media sensitivity, the authors show how their interrelationship leads to a good exposure. The authors then show how to use the tools of the digital camera, like the histogram and the "blinkies" to get the exposure the photographer wants. Once having laid out these techniques, the Gerlachs reemphasize them throughout the book so that the new landscape photographer grasps the many factors that lead to a good photograph.

The chapters on HDR and panoramas, which are items that serious landscape photographers will eventually want to try, are not comprehensive descriptions of how to use these tools but rather tell just enough so that the reader can realize their potential and not be intimidated by their apparently complex procedures.

I suppose I could disagree with a few of their recommendations, like the details on the use of back-button focusing for landscapes, but the authors are clear in indicating that these are matters of preference, and indicate other methods of accomplishing the same tasks. On the other hand, they did inspire me to reconsider some techniques that I have generally not employed.

The book has little about post processing, except with regard to HDR and panoramas, and this helps to keep the book simple. Photographers who hope to master landscape photography will have to learn these skills as well. I've talked about new landscape photographers, and I expect that advanced landscape photographers are not likely to find techniques they did not know. On the other hand, there are plenty of photographers who have tried their hand at scenery images, and who have been less then successful. For these folks, this is an ideal book.

A Classic

This book sets the standard for digital landscape photography. The serious reader will learn three fundamental concepts that will vastly improve his or her images. The first is the use of the RGB histogram, requiring the photographer to move the color channel that is farthest to the right without clipping. This technique produces perfectly exposed highlights and avoids potentially serious problems caused by working with the camera's large luminous histogram.

The second technique is back-button focusing, a term coined by the Gerlachs and a technique which they have used for years. This technique enables the photographer working on a tripod to focus on an important subject in the frame, recompose the image, and take the shot without losing the original focus. This technique will be of enormous benefit for obtaining sharp focus on the critical element in the frame.

The third technique is using manual exposure, which avoids, among other things, the problem caused by light coming through the viewfinder and thereby altering the camera's meter and causing underexposure. Manual exposure is a foolproof method for avoiding this problem and is to be preferred to autoexposure in most circumstances.

There is a great deal more in the book than the three techniques mentioned above, and the book is rich in additional information for the digital landscape photographer. However, I believe that adopting these three techniques alone will produce an enormous improvement in one's landscape photography. The Gerlachs are to be congratulated for producing such an important book that I believe will become a classic in photography.

wonderful book - cheap print

The book is wonderful, the two authors spend most of their time discussing how to take excellent images in the field, rather than wasting too much time on hardware (one chapter) or digital post-processing (two chapters dealing with HDR and panoramas).
The rest deals with exposure, how to obtain sharp images, light conditions, composition etc. I like the author's style, stating their preferences where they think they matter and discussing the options where the personal needs or preferences of the individual photographer have to be considered. The book is illustrated with many superb images throughout.
What is not superb, however, is the overall print quality. On many pages the text is either faded or has a bluish tinge, making reading in low light difficult. That detracts from an otherwise excellent book.

Still an excellent purchase - one of my favorite books right now.

Since the late 1970s, China’s move towards neoliberalism has made it not only one of the world’s fastest growing economies, but also one of the most polarised states. This economic, social and political transformation has led to the emergence of a new Chinese middle class, and understanding the development and the role of this new social group is crucial to understanding contemporary Chinese society.

Investigating the new politics of the middle class in China, this book addresses three major questions. First, how does the Chinese state deal with problems of national sovereignty and political representation to create the middle class both as a legitimate category of the people and as an ideal norm of citizenship? Second, how does the recognition of the middle class norm take place in the practice of everyday life? Finally, what kind of risks does the politics of the middle class generate not only for middle class subjects but also for the disenfranchised? In answering these questions, this book examines a set of practices, bodies of knowledge, measures, and institutions that aim to manage, govern, control, and orient the behaviours, gestures, and thoughts of Chinese citizens. This investigation contributes not only to the understanding of the Chinese middle class society but also to the scholarly debate over the relationship between governmental apparatuses, subjectification, and life-building.

Drawing on ethnographic information, historical archives, and the media, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars working in the fields of Chinese studies, Chinese politics, ethnic studies and urban studies, as well as those interested in culture, society, class and welfare.
