Habitats: Private Lives in the Big City, by Constance Rosenblum

There may be eight million stories in the Naked City, but there are also nearly three million dwelling places, ranging from Park Avenue palaces to Dickensian garrets and encompassing much in between. The doorways to these residences are tantalizing portals opening onto largely invisible lives.  Habitats offers 40 vivid and intimate stories about how New Yorkers really live in their brownstones, their apartments, their mansions, their lofts, and as a whole presents a rich, multi-textured portrait of what it means to make a home in the world’s most varied and powerful city.  These essays, expanded versions of a selection of the Habitats column published in the Real Estate section of The New York Times, take readers to both familiar and remote sections of the city—to history-rich townhouses, to low-income housing projects, to out-of-the-way places far from the beaten track, to every corner of the five boroughs—and introduce them to a wide variety of families and individuals who call New York home. These pieces reveal a great deal about the city’s past and its rich store of historic dwellings. Along with exploring the deep and even mystical connections people feel to the place where they live, these pieces, taken as a whole, offer a mosaic of domestic life in one of the world’s most fascinating cities and a vivid portrait of the true meaning of home in the 21st-century metropolis.

Review
"a book rich with poignant, colorful, and endearing portraits of the common New Yorker"-Lauren Palmer,Urban Omnibus

"Part urban sociology, part journalistic snooping, Constance Rosenblum’s remarkable stories reveal the true variety of the meanings of home. Closely observed and beautifully written."-Witold Rybczynski, author of The Biography of a Building

"...a must-read for all of us New Yorkers who are forever obsessed with the never-boring topic of New York real estate and who are forever curious about how our New York neighbors, from across the street to across the river, live their domestic lives behind their curtains, blinds, and wrought iron gates."-Yukie Ohta,New York Bound Books

"Gracefully written and full of surprising insights, Rosenblum's book is a tribute to the capacity of New Yorkers to create entire worlds in the smallest of places: their apartments."-Ariel Sabar, author of Heart of the City: Nine Stories of Love and Serendipity on the Streets of New York

“Rosenblum is a fine storyteller, and it is this eye towards telling a good story that is one of the great strengths of this collection.  The primary downside to this collection, is, in fact, a plus: the short exposes often leave the reader wanting more, and after a few pages of hooking the reader, suddenly the fascinating story ends, and the interesting characters and their beautiful homes are gone.  If you like to peek into residential windows when walking down the streets of New York City and imagine the lives of the habitants, then Habitats will give you a satisfying look into how urban dwellings, and urban dwellers, come to be.”-New York History

"Rosenblum writes evocatively about a city where 'neighborhoods, streets, even individual buildings are saturated with memory.' Reading these pieces is like walking down a street at dusk and glancing into people's illuminated living rooms...From these fragments of lives she weaves an intimate portrait of a city and its inhabitants."-The Guardian

"A collection of recent newspaper columns on the homes of New York residents illuminates the ways in which the city has (and hasn’t) changed. The byline of Rosenblum (Boulevard of Dreams: Heady Times, Heartbreak, and Hope along the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, 2009) may not be familiar even to regular readers of the New York Times, and the column she was the last to write no longer exists. Yet these 40 pieces have greater staying power than many collections of newspaper columns and show the ongoing fascination with the subject of how, where and why people live where they live. These expanded selections from the newspaper’s Real Estate section are less concerned with that market—prices and square footage, though such details occasionally highlight the pieces—than they are with the stories of the inhabitants. “I wanted to use the column to write stories,” writes Rosenblum. “I wanted to use the physical nature of a home as a wedge to delve into personal history, and to produce, as one reader nicely put it, biography through real estate.” The results, she continues, “offer a mosaic of domestic life in one of the great cities of the world.” There are examples of shelter voyeurism that will leave readers in other parts of the country amazed at how much some are willing to pay to live in New York (often for so little space). But mainly, the interest in the home reflects the interesting people who inhabit it: the two clowns who must combine living quarters and rehearsal space (so many of these stories find residences serving double duty), the woman who rescues and nurses ailing kittens, the artists in their communal building, the stepdaughter of a famous author. Whether the living space in question is a fresh start or a link to the past, the thread of continuity throughout is that “the story of urban renewal has been written, rewritten, and rewritten yet again.”-Kirkus

"The tales of luck or hard work that resulted in the securing of perfect tiny shoebox apartments, rehabbed brownstones, and converted industrial spaces provide a frisson of envy that keeps us reading; it’s the same urge that has us gaze up at lighted windows from the sidewalk below and wonder if someone else’s house, and thus, their very existence, is better than our own. Rosenblum’s profiles are a celebration of New York, and of what E.B. White called 'the gift of privacy, the jewel of loneliness'—the difficulties and pleasures of finding a place and making it a home."-Publishers Weekly

"For a collection of newspaper columns, Habitats is a surprisingly cohesive book with little literary flourishes here and there. Rosenblum’s nimble portraits are written from the perspective of a sharp outsider, and personal details bleed between the individuals she interviews and the spaces they inhabit until you realize that there isn’t any border between them."-New Republic

What comes first? An interesting house or interesting owner?
By Jill Meyer
The compilation of Constance Rosenblum's columns for the New York Times is called "Habitats", with a sub-title of "Private Lives in the Big City". Her book gives the reader an interesting look at both pieces of real estate and the people who own them. Sometimes the house or apartment is more interesting than the owner or tenant, and sometimes it's the other way 'round.

Rosenblum writes about 40 homes and apartments in all five boroughs of New York City. Mostly written from 2009 to 2012, these brief glimpses into the lives and abodes of others is a startling examination of what makes a "house" - whether a 374 square foot apartment or a house with 20 some-odd rooms - a "home". She looks at how - often - the inhabitant turns the house into a place of interest and, conversely, how the house can turn the inhabitants into people of interest. Many times the owner has found a house of his or her dreams and invests that place with a personal touch - through the use of art work, masks, and furniture. The houses become a personal testimony of the lives lived within.

But the house can also be seen as a molder of lives. Several apartments are highlighted as the homes of multi-generational families. Three closely-related families have found a house that will give them all shelter and a true sense of "family". Is the house "special" for its architecture? I don't think so; it's "special" for what it allows its residents to do in the house.

Rosenblum has taken a diverse group of people and houses, most with interesting lives or histories, and matched them up. My only complaint about the book is that I wish it included more pictures, particularly of the houses themselves. This is not a coffee-table book, with tons of photos, but rather a smallish paperback, with only the residents pictured. I assume the original New York Times pieces these chapters were once did not include many pictures, either. But, I wish - somehow - more had been taken and included in this book. Other than that, I can recommend it as the picture of New York City it is intended to be.

Lives of the Upper Crust
By B. Wolinsky
Collected from the Real Estate section of the New York Times, these articles show you the elegant, or sometimes eccentric flair of the city's apartment dwellers, and some private houses too. One of them is a white couple in Mott Haven, which is probably the last place you'd see an upper middle class couple in this city. The place is called the "Bertine Block" on East 136th, an area not known for elegance, despite the stately-looking buildings (the housing projects in the area didn't help things.) They'd lived there since the 1920's and never left, and as for the thugs in the streets, they left the family alone because they knew they lived there. But the stained glass windows were ruined by bullets.

As for the other articles, they're not as interesting. One of the problems with the Real Estate section is that it's all about apartments none of us can afford. Most of the city's unmarried people live with roommates, and they don't put much effort into decorating. If they do, then it mostly consists of painting the walls with eccentric designs and/or furnishing the place with dumpster-diving treasures. Then again, the New York Times Sunday section doesn't market itself to people that have no money to spend, so the elegant fancy stuff is all we see.
Still, sometimes I'd rather see a section titled "getting along in a cramped pad."

You don't have to be a New Yorker....
By A voracious reader
....to find this book quite enjoyable. I loved reading the columns in the NY Times and the author has included some of the most interesting in the book. You can "live vicariously" and you'll almost feel as though you know the people. The author has a very pleasant writing style, too.

The author will give a free lecture at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum on October 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The United States and China: A History from the Eighteenth Century to the Present (Asia/Pacific/Perspectives), by Dong Wang

Combining original research with contemporary scholarship, The United States and China re-examines over two centuries of interaction between the United States and China in a changing world. It explains the foundations and character of their political, economic, military, social, and cultural relations, and shows how they have come to shape the domestic and international affairs of the two countries. American-Chinese relations have also been affected by national and global forces. Societal interchanges and government-level interactions are the dual themes of this research survey. Since 1784 when the first American ship, the Empress of China, landed in Canton (Guangzhou), U.S.-Chinese relations have moved from the periphery to the center of strategic attention, for both countries. This transformation has not eroded either American supremacy or Chinese sovereignty, but in the 21st century has given rise to a new order of national, bilateral, and supranational institutions that conjoins the two peoples. Progress, patience and, most importantly, peace are the proven historical cure for the various ills engendered by Sino-U.S. interactions.

This text offers the first comprehensive synthesis of the history of U.S.-Chinese relations from initial contact to the present. Balancing the modern (1784–1949) and contemporary (1949– ) periods, Dong Wang retraces centuries of interaction between two of the world’s great powers from the perspective of both sides. The author explores key themes in each phase of the relationship and highlights important case studies for more in-depth treatment. She examines state-to-state diplomacy, as well as economic, social, military, religious, and cultural interplay within varying national and international contexts. In both form and content, these multi-faceted encounters have shaped one of the most significant bilateral relationships of our time. As China itself continues to grow in global importance, so does the U.S.-Chinese relationship, and this book provides an essential grounding for understanding its past, present, and possible futures.

Review
Wang has written a remarkable survey of Sino-American relations from the first encounter in 1784 to the present day. There are several surveys of Sino-American relations that primarily focus on the US side of the relationship, and none of these accounts has the depth of this volume. The author constructs her chapters in a manner that gives readers a deep understanding of both sides of the equation as the relationship has developed over more than 200 years. In addition, each chapter guides readers to additional sources to go even deeper into the subject. This book will be the standard account for many years to come of how the relationship has developed and changed over time. The comprehensive bibliography by itself, including both Chinese-language and English-language sources, is worth the price of the book. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in the complex relationship that has developed between two countries that each have their own vision of national greatness; should be standard reading for policy makers on both sides of the Pacific. Summing Up: Essential. All levels/libraries. (CHOICE)

The relationship between the United States and China may be the single most important bilateral relationship in the modern world. Dong Wang's book is an extremely valuable guide to that relationship, combining history and international relations to give a powerful account of how the two countries first encountered each other, and why their interaction matters so much in the present day. (Rana Mitter, University of Oxford)

The United States and China is well researched and written. This ambitious study is a useful contribution to the literature on the history of Chinese-American relations. This book stands out for its comprehensiveness and balance, and students of history and international relations will find it to be accessible and insightful. (Pacific Affairs)

About the Author
Dong Wang is professor of contemporary Chinese history and director of the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Turku in Finland.

A real page turner
By A keen reader
This is the most outstanding and well-researched book about U.S.-China relations. It is a real page-turner and brings life to core encounters between these two great nations. It taps into original sources in Chinese and English never used before. Its breadth of vision spans high diplomacy, trade, Christian mission, diaspora and expatriate communities, intellectual property rights, education and the role of individuals, striking a fair balance between Chinese and American protagonists and their self-perceptions through the centuries. It is in erudite dialogue with the existing literature in English and Chinese on the history of of U.S.-China relations. It is exiting reading for students who need an introduction to the topic and for specialists who want a refreshing overview that brings the narrative up to date.

Good lead-in for the next book.
By Amazon Customer
Although I wish it was longer, it is called a short-story for a reason. This story neatly ties up the loose ends from book 1 and hints about the characters from the next book in the series.
It starts out with a character we have not seen since FOUND and quotes a bit of the book, showing this characters side of the story. (I mean, we were all a bit creeped out by the first book, but we never thought about how that girl must have felt, getting a call from two strange kids, asking if she was adopted) This SS fills in the blanks and sets up the premise for RISKED nicely. Well-written as always.

Very short, short story.

Way too short for the cost. Didn't have any meat to it and really didn't add much to the overall storyline in my opinion.

Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding

Teachers struggle every day to bring quality instruction to their students. Beset by lists of content standards and accompanying “high-stakes” accountability tests, many educators sense that both teaching and learning have been redirected in ways that are potentially impoverishing for those who teach and those who learn. Educators need a model that acknowledges the centrality of standards but also ensures that students truly understand content and can apply it in meaningful ways. For many educators, Understanding by Design addresses that need.

Simultaneously, teachers find it increasingly difficult to ignore the diversity of the learners who populate their classrooms. Few teachers find their work effective or satisfying when they simply “serve up” a curriculum--even an elegant one--to students with no regard for their varied learning needs. For many educators, Differentiated Instruction offers a framework for addressing learner variance as a critical component of instructional planning.

In this book the two models converge, providing readers fresh perspectives on two of the greatest contemporary challenges for educators: crafting powerful curriculum in a standards-dominated era and ensuring academic success for the full spectrum of learners. Each model strengthens the other. Understanding by Design is predominantly a curriculum design model that focuses on what we teach. Differentiated Instruction focuses on whom we teach, where we teach, and how we teach. Carol Ann Tomlinson and Jay McTighe show you how to use the principles of backward design and differentiation together to craft lesson plans that will teach essential knowledge and skills for the full spectrum of learners.

Connecting content and kids in meaningful ways is what teachers strive to do every day. In tandem, UbD and DI help educators meet that goal by providing structures, tools, and guidance for developing curriculum and instruction that bring to students the best of what we know about effective teaching and learning.

Not Really An Integration
By Timothy Haugh
Each well-known separately in educational circles--McTighe as one of the developers of UbD and Tomlinson as the guru of differentiated instruction--they have come together to write a book that is an attempt to meld their philosophies. In that, they are at best partially successful.

Though I am a supporter of much of the work of both of these authors, I found little new here that hasn't been said better elsewhere. On top of that, I didn't really find this book to be a melding of their ideas. It was more an experience of two people explaining their own thing in alternate stretches of prose with only a modest attempt at linking them together.

For someone not familiar with either author's earlier work, this could be a valuable introduction. On the other hand, I would point a reader to their individual work before suggesting this one.

Good Text Book
By S. Cornett
I bought this book because it is the required text for a grad class I am taking, but it is one of the best "required texts" I have had in any course.

I already am familiar with Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design, but I found the way they are showing the correlation between the two to be very useful.

The authors don't try to impress the reader with their extensive vocabulary, but rather they explain their ideas in clear concise language. Since I have usually had a long day of teaching before I sit down to tackle the assignment, it is wonderful to have a book that is not a chore to read.

Thanks for a great text!

Extremely dull and repetitive
By Sean
I had to purchase this book for a grad class, and wasn't able to make it through more than a few pages at a time. The concepts behind Understanding by Design and Differentiated Instruction really aren't that hard to grasp; in fact, I think I sufficiently summed it all up to a friend in about 10 seconds, so I fail to see the need for 175 pages on it. It gets redundant by the second chapter, and they spend far too much time expounding on why UBD and DI are so necessary, rather than actually giving you helpful advice on how to implement them.

The Agriculture Hall of Fame: Stories (Juniper Prize for Fiction), by Andrew Malan Milward

These powerful stories limn the complexities and dilemmas of life in Kansas, a state at “the center of the center of America,” as a billboard in one story announces. Andrew Malan Milward explores the less visible aspects of the Kansas experience—where its agrarian past comes into conflict with the harsh present reality of drugs, fundamentalism, and corporatism, relegating its agrarian identity to museums and amusement parks.

Presented in a triptych, the stories in Milward’s debut collection range across a varied terrain, from tumbledown rural barns to modern urban hospitals, revealing the secrets contained therein.

Review
"The 10 gorgeous stories that make up this Juniper Prize-winning debut collection from Milward, a Kansas native and Iowa M.F.A. graduate, offer unique glimpses into Midwestern calamities and the folks who find themselves affected by them. In Milward's world, there's nary a sunny sky in sight, with characters who are "all reversed in some ways, our lives shading backwards like the shadows on the moon." But this gloominess is greatly buoyed by the author's poetic prose and a pitch-perfect eye for detail, resulting in one tender, tragic portrait after another. STARRED REVIEW"―Publishers Weekly

"The ten stories in Andrew Malan Milward's The Agriculture Hall of Fame are set in "the center of America": Kansas. And they are all, in their own unique ways, wild, hopeful, and devastating. So much is communicated in so little―a story that barely makes three pages packs a gut punch or two along the way."―ForeWord

"Two sons struggle to understand their Vietnam Vet father. A mother rejects her meth-addicted son. A farmer's life becomes tied―fatally―to his barn. A brother and sister speak with heartbreaking humor about everything but the cancer killing her. These beautiful stories, ranging the cities and towns of Kansas from Ulysses to El Dorado, are as intimate and compassionate as they are unflinching. Andrew Malan Milward has made of the Sunflower State a doorway into the American soul."―Naeem Murr, author of The Perfect Man

"Andrew Malan Milward is an exceptionally gifted and mature storyteller, attentive to the intricacies of character and place. There's no showing off here, no macho posturing, no coy evasion, no attention-demanding voice or ploy. This debut collection is wise, patient, vivid, and deep. One gets the impression that these stories were written slowly and with great care. Further, one gets the refreshing impression that the author sincerely needed to write them."―Chris Bachelder, Juniper Prize contest judge and author of Abbott Awaits: A Novel

"The Kansas of The Agriculture Hall of Fame is brokedown, hardluck country. Andrew Malan Milward's precarious, paralyzed people are lost in place, and know it, alternately circling and fleeing the center of the center of America. As one says, 'Out here, everybody's crazy with looking for something.' Wry and sad, this is a fine debut collection."―Stewart O'Nan, author of The Odds

"Andrew Malan Milward is a subtle writer with an unsparing eye and a heart as vast as a prairie. The ten stories in his first book, The Agriculture Hall of Fame, are graceful evocations of loss―of fathers and first loves, of lakes and sisters, of the rusting midwestern heartland one sees from a bus window as it pulls away. An evocative debut from a writer to cheer for."―Lauren Groff, author of Delicate Edible Birds: And Other Stories and Arcadia

"Milward's characters are so colorfully drawn, so carefully and deliberately described, that there appears always to be hope; a second chance is just around the corner, there is some glorious redemption just beyond the pages we are given."―The Rumpus.com

"I'm clearly biased about the 'place' of these stories, but the stories stand up. They're not just good Kansas stories; they're good stories period. I can't wait to see what Milward does next."―TheStoryIsTheCurse.blogspot.com

"With The Agriculture Hall of Fame, Milward often embraces the archetypes of Midwestern life while at the same time refusing to be defined by them, and in the end, the collection feels Midwestern, yet at the same time, it feels like an incredibly strong group of stories, no matter where they happen to take place."―Word/Sound

Not just plains
By Colossus
The frequent references to Milward's book as being "sad" or "tragic" or "tender" are, to me, a bit misleading. Yes, the stories have human dramas that don't necessarily have happy endings, but the stories also have a sense of humor that does not sacrifice intelligence or complexity. The stories are just plain good.

On the charge of the stories having a Midwestern feel, this book is certainly guilty. But don't be turned off by that. The Midwest is part of our national mythology--it's plains and picket fences and agricultural economy lives inside us--and Milward knows this and plays with it. No one knows Kansas better.

Gorgeous
By Roman
Exquisite--these lovely stories capture with almost pitch-perfect precision, how it feels like to live in the heartland of America, told with humor, honesty, irony. Whether you've been to the midwest, or have never visited those parts, with great warmth and compassion, this book takes you inside the homes and loves and longings of ordinary Americans in Kansas, across all age groups, classes, male and female. The title story (mixing themes of agriculture, horse foaling, memory, love) and "Cure for Cancer" (a brother and sister confronted with cancer) are particularly outstanding, but every story here packs a punch.

Well worth the wait.
By Mary Anne Doty
Milward's collection of short stories haunts you in a way you don't expect. His characters are so carefully drawn that they stay with you long after you finish each story. He has the gift of bringing each character to life and making you care about them. These are stories to savor and share.

Dexter the Tough, by Margaret Peterson Haddix

I’m the new kid. I am tuf. This morning I beat up a kid.

It’s only the first day of school for Dexter, but he’s already mad at the principal, and the secretary, and the janitor, and the kids who laugh at him. When his teacher tells the class to write a story, Dexter writes about how tough he is—and how he’s already gotten into a fight. Is any of Dexter’s story true? Why was the other boy crying before Dexter hit him? And why would the other boy still want to be Dexter’s friend?

Even Dexter doesn’t know the answers to some of those questions. But as he deals with family problems, a persistent teacher, and a boy who’s strangely interested in floor wax, he discovers many surprises hidden in his own tale.

Dexter hated his new school already," opens Haddix's (the Shadow Children series) poignant if plodding novel about a fourth-grader who, on his first day at school, gets laughed at by other kids when he slips and falls on the newly polished floor. In class, his "sparkly, enthusiastic" teacher ("He hated that kind of teacher") tells her students that she wants them to write a story that lets her know more about who they are. Dexter writes, "I'm the new kid. I am tuf. This morning I beat up a kid." The author gradually reveals the details behind the incident (mortified by his peers' laughter, Dexter impulsively punches Robin, a boy he encounters in the bathroom) as well as the true source of his anger. While his father receives cancer treatments in Seattle, Dexter must live with his grandmother in Kentucky. In several rather repetitious meetings, his patient teacher encourages him to flesh out his story, asking Dexter questions that help him acknowledge his feelings, including his resentment at being left behind by his parents, his concern about his father and his guilt about hitting Robin. As he comes to terms with his emotions, Dexter accepts the friendship that kind Robin offers, which (along with the news that a bone marrow donor for his father has finally been found) brings the tale to an upbeat close. Though Haddix creates some realistic scenes and shapes a sympathetic protagonist, readers may find the narrative's pace frustratingly poky. Ages 7-10. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 2–5—When Dexter presents his perky teacher with his first assignment, it reads, "This morning I beat up a kid. I am tuf." Ms. Abbott pushes him to add details and much more to his story. With each revision readers learn more about why Dexter is angry, confused, worried, lonely, sorry, and why he hit Robin in the bathroom, and they see the developing friendship between the two boys. They discover that on Dexter's first day at his new school, he is left abruptly in a hallway by the school secretary and is laughed at when he falls on a slippery floor. They find out about his father's cancer and that he is living with his grandmother in Kentucky because his parents are at a hospital in Seattle. Slowly, they learn, along with Dexter, that the incident didn't happen exactly as he remembers it. An appropriately happy ending wraps up all of the loose ends. Haddix does an excellent job of capturing the voice of a fourth-grade boy. Dexter is a multifaceted character who thinks about his actions and emotions like a smart, confused kid, never like an adult. Occasional full-page drawings nicely portray the actions and feelings of the characters in this easy chapter book.—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

From Booklist
When his parents travel to Seattle seeking a cure for his father's cancer, fourth-grader Dexter is shipped off to stay with his grandmother in Kentucky. The transition is a difficult one for the boy, who manages to misinterpret the actions of nearly everyone he encounters and to beat up a classmate on his first day at the new school. Luckily, his perceptive teacher assigns a long-term writing project that allows her to probe Dexter's thoughts and helps him come to terms with the difficult issues he faces. Haddix's story succeeds on several levels: Dexter adjusts to his new life; he accepts fears associated with his father's illness and impending bone-marrow transplant; and, through Dexter's writing assignment, readers come to understand much about authorship, revision, and point of view. Elliott's illustrations capture the poignant emotions of these characters, making this a thoughtful choice for reading aloud or for emerging chapter-book readers. Kay Weisman

Reluctant Reader Finishes Book
By Sap
My 12 year old son (6th grader) is a reluctant reader. I usually set a number of pages that he must read and he actually went beyond the goal at the first sitting. I know this book is geared for ages 7-10 but it held his interest and he enjoyed it so don't let the age range be your guide. It's a good read for boys who seem to be more interested in...well other things besides reading books--Mission Accomplished.

By Midwest Book Review
Margaret Peterson Haddix's DEXTER THE TOUGH tells of new kid Dexter, whose defense against being new is to assume a tough exterior confronting principal, janitor, and kids who laugh at him. His determination to handle family and school problems with a tough display will lead to trouble unless he modifies his approach in DEXTER THE TOUGH.

Ever felt misunderstood?
By slholco1
Dexter is mad. He hates his new school, living with his grandma, the principal, the secretary, and even the custodian. That's why he hit Robin on the first day at his new school. Now, his teacher wants him to write a story. Dexter decides to write about punching Robin. As he writes he realizes that things aren't always as they seem.

I loved this book! As I read I really started to care about Dexter and found his character very interesting. I think this would be a great book for any kid who ever felt misunderstood.

  • Political Economy examines how market forces, corporate ownership, and government policies shape the advertising and media promotion environment.

  • Globalization presents work on advertising and marketing as a global, intercultural, and transnational practice.

  • Audiences as Labor, Consumers, Interpreters, Fans introduces how people construct promotional meaning and are constructed as consumers, markets, and labor by advertising forces.

  • Social Institutions looks at the pervasiveness of advertising strategies in different social domains, including politics, music, housing, and education.

  • Everyday Life highlights how a promotional ethos and advertising initiatives pervade self image, values, and relationships.

"[T]he editors have gathered together an impressive set of contributions from leading and emerging scholars who consider advertising, promotional culture and consumer culture from a range of disciplinary perspectives… [T]aken together the thirty chapters create a rich, if sometimes troubling, tapestry depicting advertising and promotion practices, and exploring how these relate to consumer experiences and wider societal structures and concerns." – Stephanie O’Donohoe, The University of Edinburgh

Prayer Participant's Guide: Six Sessions on Our Relationship with God (Groupware Small Group Edition), by Philip Yancey

In this six-session study, award-winning author Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat—the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect—of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? How does it work? And more importantly, does it work? In theory, prayer is the essential human act, a priceless point of contact between us and the God of the universe. In practice, prayer is often frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? is an exploration of the mysterious intersection where God and humans meet and relate. Designed for use with the video.

'...a new and powerful effort....Philip Yancey asks the tough questions about prayer that many are afraid to ask....Yancey writes as a friend and fellow-struggler, giving voice to the questions we may ponder but never bring up....This questioning process...inspires us to pursue prayer more earnestly....[This book] will encourage you as you meet with God daily and bring the details of your life before Him. You'll develop a stronger prayer vocabulary and a richer sense of the mystery and joy of prayer…' (Presidential Prayer Team)

'...theological substance, quality of biblical reflection, and readability...make it accessible even to those coming to faith, Bible reading, or prayer for the first time....Yancey writes more as a journalist, with a sharp eye for detail and an investigative unwillingness to force conclusions....One of the chief benefits of Philip Yancey's work is that he'll go where the evidence leads....' (Christianity Today)

'...one of the many small evidences of this book's forcefulness is the number of times I did put it down -- the number of times I interrupted my reading because I was inspired to pray....[This] is the rare book about prayer that, rather than inadvertently distracting me from the pursuit of a praying life, actually prompts me to pray....' (Books and Culture)

'Yancey strikes a moving chord with this book that is more full of yearning and wonder than it is of easy answers....[It's] suffused with a cautious hope....The book's strength lies in its balance, with Yancey holding equally important ideals in a beautiful tension...' (Publishers Weekly)

'Gently and with intelligence and compassion, Yancey works toward a vision of prayer as a kind of 'awkward rehersal' and, ultimately, toward the kind of conversation humankind had with God at the beginning of creation.' (Library Journal)

'[Prayer] is well researched, captivating, and meets the reader right where he/she is at in the moment....If you are like me and have difficulties in praying then this book is a must for you.' (1340MAG.com)

'He knows that the main purpose of prayer is not to make life easier, but to know God.' (Christian Science Sentinal)

'...the author's exploration of the topic includes a candid assessment of his own sense of failure, along with his growing sense of wonder at the possibliities of conversation with God....' (Today's Christian Woman)

'Yancey's combination of talent, research, and openness about his own struggles make 'Prayer' worth looking into if you...have ever felt frustrated with your prayer life.' (Relevant Magazine)

'...offers readers' compelling insights about the topic of prayer, exploring the mysterious intersection where God and humans meet and relate....' (Homecoming (Bill and Gloria Gaither))

'Philip Yancey approaches the mysteries of communicating with God in this thoroughly researched yet highly accessible book....[He] skillfully interweaves Scripture with insights from Christian thinkers of many traditions, cultures, and eras....Fresh anecdotes and relevant testimonies of ordinary people give the book a compelling quality.' (The Banner)

'Philip Yancey is that rare example of a self-proclaimed recovering fundamentalists who is actually a spiritually healthy human being.' (Birmingham News)

'...the experience of reading 'Prayer' is similar to the experience of prayer itself: a meandering journey with streaks of brillance, communion, illumination, and satisfaction....'Prayer' is a reader-friendly book, peppered with vignettes and sidebars from people attesting to the power of prayer....[It] is subtle, elusive, and evanescent, inviting readers to discern their own meaning....'Prayer' can help reinvigorate a prayer life. It invites us to believe that God is listening.' (The Plain Dealer)

Excellent Study
By Matt Mobley
I led this DVD study after completing '3:16 the Numbers of Hope'. There was no comparison. This study was so much deeper and better done. I highly recommend this study for a church or small group. Yancey has put time into this participant's guide/study to make it an excellent resource for learning to pray better.

Another thought-provoking book from Philip Yancey
By Kenneth Guthrie
Good or bad, I'm probably biased because Philip and I were in school together. However, this book, like the many books Philip has written before, explores an aspect of belief normally left untouched or unanswered. Philip writes as most people think and expresses those thoughts carefully and logically. He does not give you answers but rather makes you realize the answers for yourself.

If you want a practical guide to the meaning and effect of prayer explored through Philip's eyes and those of others he uses as reference, this is the book you should read.

Engaging study
By DR
We are currently using the DVD and participant's tools in two home groups. The author's style and outdoors setting fit very well in our Southwest culture. I especially appreciate the study book's questions and exercises for further study. Like any study, you get out of it want you put into it, yet we've found it to be very inviting and challenging.
