Vital supplement to the DVD but wouldn't do much on its own without DVD

This is meant to go along with the DVD of the same title. I definitely would get just one of these guides when you purchase the DVD for your small group. It has some helpful discussion questions and fun interactive activities. Best of all, at the end of each chapter is a list of websites, books, movies, and other resources you can use to take action on the topic at hand. At the end of the series, we had a night where everyone brought their laptops, we divided up the different resources the book mentions, and looked up info. From there, we got some ideas for things we could implement. I would not get a guide for all the members in your group, unless they are super diligent and you think they will go through it all on their own between group meetings. Otherwise, just order one, and use it like a leader guide.

Become A Good Samaritan Today

Something I have explored more and more over the past couple of years is the social-justice component of the Gospel. Thanks to many prophetic voices in the Christian world, the proclamation that all Christians should intentionally care for the "least of these brothers and sisters" has been ringing loudly among many groups of Christians, particularly my own generation, the Millennials.

As a crown to this budding movement of social-justice in Christian circles, renowned publisher Zondervan has teamed up with World Vision--one of the largest Christian humanitarian organizations in the world--to produce a small-group study curriculum called "start>Becoming a Good Samaritan".

The program, led by Michael Seaton, is designed to help "churches, small groups, and outreach organizations to inform, train, and inspire individuals to start putting their faith into action." To bring about this transformation, the process uses six dynamic one-hour sessions, each themed around a particular issue. Each session is aided by a Participant's Guide and is composed of an opening prayer, some personal introspection, the viewing of a forty-minute segment from the program DVD, and finally some discussion.

While the discussion and small-group participatory elements form the foundation for transformation to occur, the core component of the curriculum is the DVD. In what I consider to be a masterpiece, Zondervan and World Vision brought together a veritable "who's who" of justice-minded Evangelical Christians.

Some of the most well-known participants include Rob Bell (popular pastor and author), Shane Claiborne (ordinary radical and author), Eugene Peterson (author of "The Message" Bible paraphrase), Tony Campolo (Christian teacher, author, and sociology professor), Gary Haugen (President of International Justice Mission), Archbishop Desmond Tutu (Nobel Peace prize winner and major opponent of apartheid in South Africa), Chuck Colson (the founder of "Prison Fellowship"), Jim Wallis (founder and editor of "Sojourners Magazine"), Richard Stearns (President of World Vision), John Ortberg (popular pastor and author), Kay Warren (wife of pastor Rick Warren and social activist), Philip Yancey (popular spirituality author), and Ron Sider (author of the seminal justice book "Rich Christian In An Age of Hunger"). Overall there are more than 50 leading social justice voices taking part in the project; click here to read a short biography of each contributor.

These participants each share some words throughout the DVD segments of the curriculum. The DVD segments are formatted in a video-interview format with some of the participants being featured more prominently than others, but each of the participants has at least a couple of minutes of screen time. Also, the whole series is hosted by John Ortberg, who offers a provocative introduction to each session as well as some concluding remarks.

Understanding that the realm of social justice is vast, the program splits up the material into six sessions, each with a particular theme:

"Becoming A Good Samaritan" (Who Is My Neighbor?)
"Caring For the Sick" (How to Fight Global Epidemics and Prevent Diseases)
"Seeking Justice and Reconciliation" (How Fairness Changes People, Communities, and Nations
"Honoring the Poor" (How Best to Serve Those In Need)
"Tending to God's Creation" (Why Environmental Stewardship Is Biblical and Beneficial)
"Loving the Forsaken" (How to Care for the Disabled, Orphaned, and Incarcerated)

The quality of the DVD segments is fantastic. Put together by the C2 group, the segments are for more than mundane interviews. The clips are deeply experiential due to musical interludes and images relating to each segment's theme which are sprinkled throughout the duration. The DVD's style reaches to a generation of young-adults raised on rapidly-moving, evocative media as its main medium of communication.

In its immense scope, "start>Becoming a Good Samaritan" is truly an unprecedented initiative. Aimed at launching a global campaign of love and justice, the program beckons each of us to embrace our individual roles as "good Samaritans" and dares to imagine the impact that more than 77 million American Christians could have on the greater world.

I highly recommend this curriculum for small-group study, but it also has great value for individual study; I made my way through the Participant's Guide and DVD on my own and still gained much. The only downside I see to the program is its truncated length. I'm not fully convinced that full transformation of the heart can occur through only six one-hour sessions but, as the title suggests, the program is a great start. I think for someone who is already engaged in many of these issues, the program is great fuel for the fire, but for someone being introduced to these matters for the first time, this curriculum should be viewed as a springboard to much more study and activity.

If you want to learn practical ways that you can live out your faith through the love of the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized, I strongly encourage you to listen to the great words of these modern-day prophets of justice and compassion and start becoming a "good Samaritan" today.

Great Resource to Get You to Act on Your Faith

Our group has greatly appreciated this resource as it not only has prompted us to show our faith through actions, but it has also given very practical suggestions on how we can show our faith. Each session gives you a Personal Reflection section, which are split into 3 parts, and are great to read through in the morning. At the end of each of the 3 sections there are suggested ways in which you can live out what you are learning about. At the very end of each session there are lists of books, websites, and videos that continue to explore the topic covered.

Overall, Great Book for small group study.

Hooray! On Kindle At Last

This is one of my favourite escapist reads. I can't count the number of times since receiving my first Kindle 4 years ago that I checked for Judith Michael's books in the Kindle Store. Now they're here and I'm ready to revisit this story.

A young woman is bequeathed a chain of hotels but is cheated out of that inheritance by disgruntled and disinherited family members. She goes on to make a name for herself by creating a chain of upscale hotels.

It's your basic rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story with a little romance along the way. If you're looking for a hot bubble bath soak of a book, you can't go wrong with this one.

Nothing better than a long glorious read to make an evening relaxing! Just because this book is not currently on the new best selling list does not mean it should be ignored. Some of the best reads are out of the seventies and eighties. This is one of the finest.

Great story

This is a story of how such a huge loss can show you how to grow and mature and win back the things that you had lost. She gained everything back, was accepted back into the family and found her true love once more.

Laura is a very strong woman and with the help of family you can achieve anything that you want in life.

A "Must Read" an an "Enjoyable Read" from Beginning to End

As an elementary educator and a parent, too, I offer my kudos to Ms. Boroson for a wonderful book. The writing is clear, concise and accessible, and each topic well presented. Through the use of concrete examples, the author explains and demonstrates techniques that can be used by teachers and even parents. I was especially impressed that anyone with questions, needing more information, or further examples or guidance is able to contact the author. This book belongs in the hands of all school teachers and even in the homes of all those who are affected by autism. This book is a "must read" and an enjoyable read from beginning to end.

A MUST have book!

Barbara Boroson's book is a valuable resource for educators, parents and administrators looking to create a positive learning experience for a student with ASD. The style of writing draws the reader in giving them a profound understanding of the complexity of ASD...while still celebrating the beauty and strength of the individual child (something every educator must remember!). In each chapter the author discusses behaviors a child with autism may exhibit in school, the reasons behind the behavior and provides educators with the tools necessary for a successful school year! As a special/general educator for over 20 years, I consider ASD in the Mainstream Classroom:How to Reach and Teach students with ASD to be a valuable resource...a MUST have book!

To say Helen Keller is one of the most unique figures in American history would be an understatement. As a young child, Helen lost both her vision and hearing, leaving her deafblind, an almost hopelessly debilitating condition that left her literally trapped, unable to communicate with anyone. As she would later write, “My life was without past or future; death, the pessimist would say, ‘a consummation devoutly to be wished.’" Nobody would have blamed her for being hopelessly frustrated and imprisoned by her disabilities; in fact, that was to be expected. When her famous teacher, Anne Sullivan, brought Helen a doll and tried to teach her a few words by spelling them into her hand, the child became so frustrated that she broke the doll.

As every American now knows, Helen eventually overcame the frustration and used unimaginable perseverance to overcome her disability. With Sullivan’s help and the sense of touch, Helen eventually broke through and learned to communicate. Helen later recalled that after Sullivan put one of her hands in water and spelled water on the other hand, “I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten — a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.”

Helen’s story would have been remarkable enough if it had ended simply with her ability to communicate with the outside world, but “I had now the key to all language, and I was eager to learn to use it.” With unbridled ambition, Helen became the first deafblind individual to earn a bachelor’s degree from a college, published her own autobiography when she was just 22, and in the early 20th century became famous across the world as both an author and speaker.

Naturally, Helen was a walking embodiment and advocate for people with disabilities, both the blind and deaf, but she was just as interested in other social and political causes, eventually becoming one of the most outspoken figures of her time. Those who were inspired by her story were surprised that she was willing to voice what they believed were radical beliefs on behalf of causes like women’s suffrage, pacifism, and socialism. Helen also added actions to her words, founding both the Helen Keller International organization for research in vision, health and nutrition, and helping found the American Civil Liberties Union.

Helen Keller, through the years

As a child I found the life of Helen Keller an inspiration. The only thing I based this on was "The Miracle Worker", a movie about her. Then, I visited her home in Alabama, then I read this book. I found this book an extensive education in short with many quotes from Ms Keller as well as audio and visual aides. A must read for all. Surely it would crown her life if it was not only digitalised but written in Braille. Five thumbs up on this book.

Large download but worth it.

Have there been more thorough biographies? No doubt. But the additional content, such as embedded video of Helen Keller speaking and demonstrating how she could read lips without the benefit of sight is great stuff, and gives the reader a much better experience than simply reading. The interactive nature of it makes it take up a bit more space but it's worth it.

The Bosnian War from a Serbian's View

As someone interested in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, this book was intriguing in many ways. I, being American had certain kinds of bias already as a citizen of the country that stepped in to stop Serbian war crimes. I also know a lot of Bosnian Muslims who have given me their views and experience during the war. This led me to have a negative view of the Serbs. While by no means does this book justify what the Bosnian Serbs did, it does present them in a human way, giving credence to the idea that all sides in a war have human stories.

I thought this book was going to be a waste...

This book was required for my POL class over the summer. I was dreading reading books like this as I am a biomedical sciences major and just need this course to graduate. I am now so glad I read this book since sheds politics in a whole new light and removes itself from academia methods to expose a one mans life who personally experienced the traumatizing Bosnian War.

Humanizes War Criminal and Indicts Academia

This is a must read for anyone studying political science, international relations, ethics, or just has an interest in the psychology behind wartime atrocities and how academics sometimes profit off the suffering of others. This book examines the Bosnian War through the eyes of a college professor that is building her career off studying genocide and its ethics (or lack thereof). Her world is turned upside down when she meets Stojan, a Bosnian Serb refugee that challenges her understanding of the war and poses larger questions about the validity of ethics during war. It also makes readers think about how academia too often profits off tragedy and the broken lives of ordinary people.

The book reads like a novel and can easily be read over a weekend or at the beach. The book humanizes international relations theories as well as what these theories mean to the average man caught up in war. The book challenges the way we in the West think about conflict, and will leave you thinking long after you have finished the book.

Travis Beck is Director of Horticulture at the Mt. Cuba Center, a non-profit horticultural institution in Northern Delaware. The best compendium of interdisciplinary design I've found.

I'm a grad student in landscape architecture and I have a masters in planning and community design, as well. I also have a well-rounded education in restoring and rehabing many different habitats. In short, I've read A LOT of literature on ecological design as it relates to ecological restoration.This has been a very expensive endeavor and I still didn't learn as much from all those courses as I did from reading this book. I read it cover to cover without skipping around and found it to be written at a really relateable level for people new to ecological design and those of us exposed to extensive theory. It builds concepts nicely and discusses them in the context of case studies, but it feel more like story telling - if stories were based in science. Beck lays concepts out at a nice speed and links them together with discussions of the seminal writings in ecology that everyone working in this field should know and reference in their own work. Beck discusses more very important - must know - theory and application in less than 300 pages than I learned in 7 or 8 various ecology courses over several years. If you are just getting into ecological design this is an excellent read and reference book. If you just finished an interdisciplinary scramble of high level ecology and need a key to fit all those puzzle pieces together - this is your book. I'm very happy with it.

After the war ended, most Latvian emigrants eventually made their way to Sweden or Germany, where they lived in displaced persons camps. From there, the emigrants were sponsored by individuals or organizations and they moved once again to other parts of the world. Many came to the United States, where they established new roots and tried to perpetuate their cultural heritage while establishing new lives.

Latvians in Michigan

Latvians in Michigan is a wonderful book full of factual and personal glimpses of the Latvian families who came to America in the late 1940s when the Communists took over their homeland. The history is facinating and the personal journeys many of our Latvian neighbors and friends made were captivating reading. I have a new understanding and reverence for their customs, intelligence, the many gifts they bring to our communities and their commitment to preserving their country's traditions. There are many recipes for Latvian food and I loved the personal accounts told by those who attended and sent their children to the Latvian camp at Long Lake, Three Rivers, Michigan. I highly recommend this book for its readability, history and humanity. Bravo, Dr. Meija! Janet Howell-Obert

My husband reviewed this book, and he and his parents did arrive in Kalamazoo, MI in 1949.

The possibility of Turkey’s accession to the European Union has been problematic. About the Author

Birol A. Yesilada is professor of Political Science and International Studies and is the holder of the endowed chair in Contemporary Turkish Studies in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. He is also director of Center for Turkish Studies at PSU. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is the principal investigator for the World Values Survey project in Cyprus and has served a Co-editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and Associate Editor of The Middle East Studies Bulletin. His books include: Islamization of Turkey Under AKP Rule (co-ed with Barry Rubin), Comparative Political Parties and Party Elites: Essays in Honor of Samuel J. Eldersveld, and The Emerging European Union (with David M. Wood).

Sets the Standard for Turkish and European Relations

This is a must read for any professional or advanced student interested in learning about Turkey and its position with the European Union. This is not for a beginner however. This is a very professional analysis based on statistical and political culture. The author clearly understands the relationships between the key players in Turkey and in Europe. The power transition theory utilized in this text is unique and informative. The writing is designed to provide the reader with the most information possible while also setting the stage for understanding Turkey. Each page is filled with graphs and charts that give the reader a statistical point of reference and it is very helpful. This book outlines and utilizes in-depth analysis based on academics and political and economic culture. I have always had a thirst for knowledge about Turkey and the European Union and the accession process for future enlargement. The three pillars of the EU and how they regulate their political and economic system is unique and complex. The best part of this book to me was the evaluation of Turkey and the Copenhagen Criteria and it is discussed in full detail including a masterful analysis. This book explains the information and the situations that are needed to really understand the culture and the region. A great read and I keep going back to it to get more information and use it for research. It is a little on the expensive side for its size, but its filled with quality and structure that allows the reader to understand the institutions and the benefits/limitations of being and or becoming a member of the EU.
