A native San Franciscan, Robert Illing did graduate studies at San Francisco State University and the University of Madrid after an AB at the University of California. Liberal Catholicism wrapped in the banner of history

I had to give up on the book 70 pages in. The writer admitted that between 1780 and 1984 there was no contact between the Vatican and the United States. He spent time talking about Franklin's visit to the Vatican and Reagan's renewal of relations with the Vatican in 1984 with his friend. Here's some of what was missing...
1. Anything to do with the contacts after World War II. It's like he forgot what the content of the book was when he wrote the title.
2. Any kind of historical organization. He moves from Lincoln to Reagan in the same paragraph. A history would show the movement from one to the other and any contact one or the other had not just flash 200 years.
3. Real historical facts. He writes in extreme generalities and doesn't even bother to cite a source for the generalities.

But, instead of history, you get arguments for...
1. Contraception
2. Women's ordination
3. Ordination of married men
4. Gay marriage

Basically, I'm saying don't waste your time or money. Read "Notre Dame vs. The Klan" or "How the Catholic Church Saved Civilization" or McCullough's "John Adams" instead.

The other side of the church

Mr Illing has given wonderful insights into the relationship between the Vatican and the United States.
This well written and easy to follow book provides insights into some of the more positive things as to the scope of this international institution. I was particularly interested in the role the Vatican can play in promoting world peace. This book is a must read for Catholics and non-Catholics in getting an outsiders view of the Catholic Church and some of the postive things about formal religions.

I just now finished reading "America and The Vatican" by Robert F. Illing. I found it a mind opening look at the inner workings not only of the Vatican but of diplomacy in general.Having come of age during the time frame Mr. Illing wrote about made it all the more real for me. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a good read about history.

Several chapters cover graphene, an unzipped form of CNT that is the recently discovered allotrope of carbon that has gained a tremendous amount of scientific and technological interest. The book discusses the development of the graphene nanoribbon field effect transistor (GNRFET) and its use as a possible replacement to overcome the CNT chirality challenge. It also examines silicon nanowire (SiNW) as a new candidate for achieving the downscaling of devices. The text describes the modeling and fabrication of SiNW, including a new top-down fabrication technique. Strained technology, which changes the properties of device materials rather than changing the device geometry, is also discussed.

The book ends with a look at the technical and economic challenges that face the commercialization of nanoelectronics and what universities, industries, and government can do to lower the barriers. A useful resource for professionals, researchers, and scientists, this work brings together state-of-the-art technical and scientific information on important topics in advanced nanoelectronics.

About the Author

Dr. Razali Ismail is currently a professor and head of the Computational Nanoelectronics Research Group at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He has worked for more than 20 years in the field of modeling and simulation of microelectronics devices and has published various articles on the subject. His current research interest is in the emerging area of nanoelectronics devices, focusing on the use of carbon-based materials and novel device structure. Dr. Razali is a member of the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS).

Dr. Mohammad Taghi Ahmadi is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is active in research related to carbon-based devices and graphene-based transistor and sensor modeling. His main research interests are in nanoscale device modeling, simulation, and characterization. His research has resulted in a number of publications in high-impact journals, for which he has been several awards, including a UTM Chancellor Award (2010). Dr. Ahmadi is an IEEE and American Nano Society member.

Dr. Sohail Anwar is an associate professor of engineering at the Altoona College of The Pennsylvania State University. He is also a professional associate of the Management Development Programs and Services at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park. Dr. Anwar is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of ASEE and PAS. He recently served on the IEEE Committee on Technology Accreditation Activities (CTAA). He is a commissioner of the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET. Dr. Anwar is also editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy Engineering & Technology, published by Taylor & Francis/CRC Press.

A great updated reference

This is a great updated reference for prop makers, teachers and students. It's a good overview of different techniques and methods to go about creating props, and as an introduction to sculpture, casting and building, it's very informative. It's a good reference for learning new methods of making props, or a way to start diving into new techniques. It's also very well structured around safety and lists dangers, pros and cons of different materials or methods.

What the book doesn't fill in would be examples of how to build specific props, or designing props for shows. I don't fault the book for not including it, because it's such a broad field it would be impossible to cover everything. As a source book for having on hand to look up new methods, it's a fantastic resource.

Had to get the Kindle version because I'm not loaning out my iPad!

A book on how to make Props would be such an amazingly large tome that most any topic would suffer greatly. This is because each subject would be have to be put into broad strokes and thinly veiled generalities. Any props person worth their salt will tell you the same thing since props fall into two categories; ' anything that has ever existed or anything that has the potential to exist.' Mr.Hart's book supports the most important tool, your imagination, and without pretense walks you through the real world tools and products to SAFELY...mind you safely make any prop that you could require. It's much needed update on materials will save any professor or student of this complicated aesthetic discipline for searching out a 'Hogs head of wormwood to best added in the filling of the new moon from your local chemists best mercury and brown owl tincture.' Okay thats a bit extreme, but you will know what glove to use when you are casting with certain materials, latex or polyethylene...and why it matters. If you are making a prop for outdoor theater you may need to know should you use a animal glue, wood glue or epoxy resin? (I don't think Gorilla Glue counts as an animal glue, does it Mr.Hart?) Can I make this mask out of plaster strips or can I confidently use a Thermoplastic. Working as a Props Designer and Art Director for stage TV and FIlm since the 1990's I'm discovering techniques and insight from Mr.Harts book.
Also there is no need to treat this book gingerly, it's spiral spine lets it sit flat on a work surface and the pages are tough, spill on them just don't weld with he book open...my bad...also why I had to get it on Kindle. Plenty of space in the margins to make your own notes...or for us to send Mr.Hart suggestions for the next book....eh, next book...come on.
So in conclusion....
If you do crafts, models, cosplay or anything that involves imagination design and execution get this book.
If you are a serious student in the emerging discipline of Props Design get this book!
If you are an old codger sitting in your leather office chair saying 'the students just don't get it'....get this book!
The book is inspiringly comprehensive. Eric has given you the keys to the Kingdom and shows you how to masterfully replicate them.
