The Twilight Lords: Elizabeth I and the First Irish Holocaust, by Richard Berleth

A gripping chronicle of the ferocious twenty-year struggle between the English monarch and the feudal lords of Ireland, The Twilight Lords describes the first authentic colonial venture in English history, a venture that held captive a whole generation of the best that Ireland and England could muster. By the time the last and the greatest of the "rebels" surrendered, Elizabeth was dead, two waves of English settlers had been exterminated, and the southern part of Ireland had become a barren wilderness.

The End Of Celtic Ireland
By shancarrick
The author presents a fair and balanced account of the Irish wars between the 1560s and 1603. Most of the book concentrates on the First and Second Desmond wars, and the adventures of "The Desmond", Gerald Fitzgerald.
Many giants of the age move across the pages of this book. We are introduced to Edmund Spenser ("The Faerie Queen"), Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I, Phillip II of Spain, Francis Walshingham, William Cecil, Robert Dudley, James FitzMaurice, Gerald Fitzgerald, Red Hugh O'Donnell, Hugh O'Neill, James Eustace, Father Sanders, and many, many more.

Unfortunately, only 30-40 pages of the book are dedicated to the O'Neill uprising of the 1590s and early 1600s. One has the sense that the author was compelled to cut the work short. He rushes through the story of Hugh O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell, all the while exclaiming that theirs was the most significant rebellion in Ireland's history. Perhaps Mr. Berleth had grown tired of his subject by that point, and moved on to more interesting pursuits. Even so, The Twilight Lords was an illuminating read, and I highly recommend it to students of Irish and Elizabethan English history.

Excellent reading on dark period of Irish history
By lordhoot
Like the previous reviewer wrote, this book centered mostly around the Desmond Wars which proves to be a highly destructive conflict for the Irish people. But the book also understand that Elizabeth didn't go into Ireland by chocie but by necessity. A weak nation so close to England where it could be used by her many enemies, Elizabeth couldn't let the Irish alone. Irish lords didn't help the matter by catering to Elizabeth's enemies. The near genocidial wars that took place during Elizabeth's reign was direct result of all that. Religion, English effort to colonialized and taxes didn't help. I thought the book covered the entire story of these Irish wars very nicely without boggling down the reader with excess information. But like the previous reviewer, I wish the author went bit more into the O'Neill rebellion which was quite important.

On Halloween, college students get rowdy and the faculty gets killed
Since Father Tibor Kasparian escaped the Soviet Union, he has done his best to keep his philosophy to himself—not out of fear, but because he knows that few people could stomach an honest account of life under Stalinism. When he gets an invitation to spend a semester teaching philosophy at Independence College, Kasparian hesitates, but his friend Gregor Demarkian, a former FBI investigator, convinces him to accept. They will both wish he had decided to stay away. At Independence, Halloween is the biggest party of the year—it’s also the anniversary of the day that the school’s colonial founders pledged themselves to the American Revolution. As the students prepare to burn an effigy of King George, the hated professor Donegal Steele vanishes, and his secretary turns up dead. To keep his old friend from becoming the next victim, Demarkian will have to do his homework.

From Publishers Weekly
Following Act of Darkness , this fourth adventure of former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian takes place in two tense days at Independence College, a small but prestigious school situated in rural Pennsylvania. It is nearly Halloween: the students are preparing a traditional bonfire by heaping wood around a scaffold where an effigy of King George sits56 ; Dr. Katherine Branch, a witch, is conducting mystical rites with her coven102 ; a sociable raven named Lenore circles the faculty apartments; and the lecherous, tenured and thoroughly despised Dr. Donegal Steele7 is missing, if not missed. Demarkian, on campus to lecture about FBI investigations of serial killers, is shocked when Miss Maryanne Veer7 , Steele's secretary, is poisoned with lye in the dining hall--he takes it as a given that Steele has been murdered and that Veer suspected foul play. With the help of his high-strung preppy sidekick Bennis Hannaford43 and longtime Philadelphia friend, Father Tibor Kasparian3 , he seeks a perpetrator among the costumed students and quirky faculty. Although the characters are somewhat two-dimensional, the ominous October atmosphere is pk neatly rendered, and the possible motives and circumstances will keep readers guessing.

About the Author
Jane Haddam (b. 1951) is an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988). Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s most recent novels are Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

Halloween, a college bonfire, and a talking raven
By Michele L. Worley
The first person Father Tibor Kasparian has really hated since escaping from the Soviet Union is Dr. Donegal Steele, the pig who's the fly in the ointment for most of Independence College. Otherwise, teaching a semester of philosophy at Independence is a dream come true for Father Tibor: it's even what he was trained to do, once upon a time, even though teaching philosophy is what first got him into *so* much trouble. Father Tibor even has his first experience with pets, as Independence College has tame deer and even a talking raven (named Lenore, of course).
Two days before the Halloween bonfire - that is, two days before Tibor's friend Gregor Demarkian is due to make a guest lecture - Steele has disappeared. One half-joking rumor is that Jack Carroll, the soon-to-be-self-made law student whose tuition is cobbled together from scholarships and 30 hours a week in a body shop, finally beat the stuffing out of Steele for slandering Chessey Flint, Jack's girl. Steele's sexual harassment of various faculty and students is breathtakingly outrageous, and it doesn't seem to be blocking him from making a move for the post of chairman of the history department. Dr. Alice Elkinson, the youngest tenured faculty member and with the most serious reputation, would get it on merit if merit were considered, and her fiancee Ken Crockett would get it if the historical society got a vote, but Steele has written a popular (though tripey) book. Katherine Branch and her shadow, Vivi Wollman, are fretting that they are now professors without a department, since Women's Studies has had neither the popularity nor the academic rigor to survive at Independence, at least the way *they* teach it. The only person who is interested in locating Steele is Maryanne Veer, the department secretary; like everyone else, she doesn't *want* to see Steele, but a professor skipping out on his lecture and office hour schedule makes problems.
And when Gregor Demarkian and Bennis Hannaford are greeted with a case of lye poisoning over lunch in the Independence College cafeteria, it's Maryanne Veer who's the victim. Although she survives the attack, the damage done to her throat and voicebox effectively silences her for some time to come. And it's definitely an attack: the local sheriff can testify that Maryanne, having come from the wrong side of the tracks, knows too much about lye to attempt suicide with it; no other food in the cafeteria is contaminated, which rules out accident; and whatever food on her tray was spiked with lye disappeared while Gregor was giving first aid with his expertise on poisons.
Gregor and Tibor both have problems dealing with the students' childish antics and the other aspects of Halloween, each for his different reasons. Neither has much use for immaturity, and both have seen too much real violence to enjoy its illusion. (Gregor, of course, is a veteran of the FBI. Tibor, who up to this point in the series had been a peripheral supporting player, escaped from religious persecution in the old Soviet Union; his character, fleshed out much more here than in previous books, is definitely *not* just comic relief. 'Christianity and Constitutional Law, that was Father Tibor Kasparian.') Even Cavanaugh Street's illusions of Halloween drive Gregor up the wall, although for different reasons: nobody takes reasonable precautions. Only Bennis Hannaford, who is just now officially moving to Cavanaugh Street, takes Gregor seriously, and she says Lida and the other ladies only pat her on the head and say, Yes, dear - now that boy you were out with, is he responsible? :)
Finally, a brief overview of the supporting players. Katherine Branch is not a sympathetic character, but on the other hand, the parts of the story shown from her viewpoint make it clear that she's a phony. It's hard to believe a creep like Steele could survive so long in a public position, let alone on a college campus, even though it's his first semester: he's committed slander and sexual harassment, including *groping* a female student he didn't even know in front of a large audience. The story is saved because that's openly part of the problem Steele creates for other people - that he manages to get away with all the slimy things he does, and smear the muck on his victims rather than himself. The relationship between Chessey and Jack in the face of Steele's allegations is a major subplot: how to effectively quash Steele's rumor campaign against Chessey. Jack, as president of students, is also able to give Gregor some of the real lowdown on campus crime.
Good story, allowing for the fact that Steele couldn't get away with his antics unscathed on a real campus.

Quoth the Raven
By S Riaz
This is the fourth in the Gregor Demarkian mystery series, following on from Not a Creature Was Stirring (The Gregor Demarkian Holiday Mysteries), Precious Blood (not currently on kindle) and Act of Darkness (The Gregor Demarkian Holiday Mysteries). Although the books do not have to be read in order, I would really recommend reading at least the first book in the series before embarking on any others, as that introduces Gregor Demarkian and his friends and neighbours; including Bennis Hannaford and Father Tibor, who both feature in this novel.

Father Tibor has been invited to teach philosophy for one semester at Independent College and he has asked Gregor, (who worked for the FBI for twenty years before retirement) to give a lecture. It is Halloween and the college burns an effigy of 'Mad King George' on a bonfire each year as a college tradition. In fact, when Gregor and Bennis arrive, the college is full of students in costume, who have every intention of enjoying themselves. That is more than the faculty are doing - they are tense and divided over the possible new choice of chairman for their department. What is more, the most likely (and least poular) choice, 'The Great Doctor' Donegal Steele has gone missing. Although everyone on campus seems to have breathed a sigh of relief at his absence, Miss Maryanne Veer, the secretary for the chairman - who virtually runs the department anyway - is concerned enough to have suggested calling the police and reporting him missing. Soon after Gregor's arrival, somebody attempts to poison her with lye and he has to solve the mystery of why someone would possibly want to try to kill her and where Donegal Steele has disappeared to. As well as why Lenore, the tame Raven who feeds out of Father Tibor's hand, has become so distressed lately; behaving in an erratic manner and circling the college like a harbinger of death.

As always, Jane Haddam creates a great cast of characters and suspects to populate her novel. As well as the thoroughly unpleasant Dr Steele, who is conspicuous even in his absence, there is Dr Katherine Brand, an overtly feminist witch, the beautiful Dr Alice Alkinson and the popular Dr Kenneth Crockett, as well as students Jack Carroll and Chessey Flint. Of course, Gregor Demarkian solves the mystery, like the 'Armenian Hercule Poirot' the press has labelled him. If you enjoy authors such as Christie or P D James, then it is likely you will also enjoy the Gregor Demarkian novels. The next book in the series is A Great Day for the Deadly (The Gregor Demarkian Holiday Mysteries).

like looking at a map and some pictures of Philly ...
By Marilyn A. Bonomi
I read several of the Demarkian novels when they were first published. But as someone who was born and grew up in Philly, I finally reached the breaking point and I believe it was this novel that did it.

Is this the one where the protagonist and friends drive *south* several hours to reach a Pennsylvania college? (They'd be in Baltimore by then.) And the college has a statue of a Minuteman at its center? You know, those Boston guys? Not to mention all the triple-deckers-- that Philly doesn't have but Boston does...

Even a bare minimum of fact-checking, like looking at a map and some pictures of Philly for a start?

It's worse than all the cop shows where all the crimes take place in upper-class single-family neighborhoods, that simply don't exist inside city limits. (Body of Proof was a classic example.)

So this book is not merely a collection of papers, rather represents the highest standard of publication. The book is divided into three parts: 1. Plasma Surface Modification Techniques; 2. Other / Miscellaneous Surface Modification Techniques; and 3. General Papers. The topics covered include: low pressure plasma surface modification of a variety of polymers using various gases; atmospheric pressure plasma treatment; improvement of stain release properties of fabrics; modification of electrostatic properties of polymers; photon-based processes for surface modification of fibers; excimer UV light treatment; excimer laser surface treatment; low-energy ion treatment; photo-grafting and photo-curing; metallization of treated polymers; chemical (wet) functionalization of polymers; adhesion of paints to thermoplastic substrates; polymer release surfaces; nanolithography in polymer films; gas barrier properties of ceramic layers on polymers; and modification of interphase layer and relevance to adhesion.
This volume and its predecessors containing plentiful information should serve as a comprehensive source of latest R&D activity in the highly technologically important arena of polymer surface modification. Anyone interested –centrally or peripherally– in knowing or learning about the various ways to modify polymer surfaces should find this book of immense value.

Love Is an Orientation Participant's Guide: Practical Ways to Build Bridges with the Gay Community, by Andrew Marin, Ginny Olson

Much of today's culture defines bridge-building and reconciliation as a one-way street that leads to full theological, political and social agreement. Yet Christ demonstrated a different path of religious and cultural engagement to establish his kingdom here on earth. In light of such countercultural principles, the Christian community needs a new view on the issues that divide conservative believers and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Using the practical applications Andrew Marin has learned over the last decade of living and working in the LGBT neighborhood of Chicago called Boystown, as well as his international speaking and consulting ministry, this six-session, video-based study offers a variety of practical teachings, insights and life lessons. Rather than avoiding the topic of homosexuality, Love Is an Orientation aims to equip the Christian community to bridge the gap between LGBT and religious communities. This is not a study about “fixing” gay people. It’s about getting to know people, engaging them, and loving them like Jesus does. Designed for use with the video.

A media kingpin is dead and the chief suspect is a modern-day saint
Michael Pride could have been a world-class surgeon, but his good intentions got the best of him. He opened a clinic in one of New York’s roughest neighborhoods, and stuck around when gangs, drugs, and guns turned it into a war zone. Supporting his mission is Charles van Straadt, a media titan with a knack for incendiary headlines and a soft spot for good works. When a sex scandal threatens to derail Pride’s clinic, van Straadt is the only one who stands by him—until the mogul is poisoned, and the doctor appears to be the only person who could have done it. Former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian has a chance of proving Pride’s innocence. In a part of New York that feels more like Beirut than Broadway, it will take more than good works for the two of them to survive.

From Publishers Weekly
Gregor Demarkian, Haddam's ( Bleeding Hearts ) Armenian-American detective, returns in his tenth holiday mystery, this rather tangentially connected to Father's Day. With a gang war raging around a Harlem medical clinic and casualties pouring in, anyone could have poisoned newspaper magnate Charles van Stradt, the clinic's benefactor. Chief among the suspects are clinic director Dr. Michael Pride and head nurse Sister Augie, either of whom might have killed to keep Michael's arrest on a morals charge out of van Stradt's paper . But Michael and Augie are well-accounted for when van Stradt's granddaughter and expected heir quaffs her own dose of strychnine, so suspicion shifts to the remaining grandchildren and a lone right-to-life protester. Haddam is sparing with her clues--the reader senses rather than solves the killer's identity--and her denouement is formulaic. And in a mostly bland cast, Pride's character is frankly inexplicable. A smart, dedicated physician, he is a homosexual who not only continues to practice unsafe sex but already has the symptoms of full-blown AIDS. To impute his irresponsibility to compulsion is unthinking, the more so when it serves no plot purpose. Dear Old Dead is a disappointment for those who have enjoyed Haddam in this guise or as Orania Papazoglou.

Review
“Haddam plays the mystery game like a master.” —Chicago Tribune “Classic mysteries are back in vogue, and Jane Haddam’s . . . Gregor Demarkian series is one of the finest.” —Romantic Times Book Reviews “[Haddam] sets her holiday scenes with colorful detail.” —The New York Times

Great Mystery Writer
By Bridget Hockney
Cannot get enough of Jane and her literate mystery books. Many times I am brought back to my days as a teen working in a Catholic rectory and the reality her characters display. Jane, if you're reading this, keep on keeping on. You are one of the few writers I have read that takes a leap and discusses serious issues in your book(s). You humanize your characters and culturize its inhabitants.

A very fine Demarkian novel...and its composite rating should be higher
By Carol Mello
Not all the plots of the Demarkian novels stick in my head but this one has. Yes, I have read them all since retiring...to spend time with family and to have time to read every day and lastly because I had grown too bitter and too cynical to be effective anymore at my long term job of over three decades. In fact, searching out copies of every Demarkian novel was one of the first things I did after retiring and well worth the effort.

Despite the other lower star reviews, this is really IMHO one of her better mysteries, in the top 10. The "saint" Michael mentioned in the synopsis really is a likeable character so I was rooting for him not to be the murderer even though he was the lead suspect and also not to be another victim. One thing to keep in mind when reading a Demarkian mystery and trying to solve it is what Demarkian terms the internal consistency of the sociopath killers. This is a literate and intellectually satisfying read as are almost all of the Demarkian novels. I was not bored at all during this one.

What can I say...its Jane Haddam. And this is to replace a well loved copy that got wet. I love all the books but must confess the early ones like this are my favorites

Squeeze This!: A Cultural History of the Accordion in America (Folklore Studies in Multicultural World), by Marion Jacobson

The piano accordion experienced a roller coaster ride of popularity--rise to fame on the airwaves, stage and silver screen, then a deathly decline, followed by a pop culture resurgence. Squeeze This! rolls out a history of the squeezebox with the first book-length study of its fascinating role in twentieth-century American music and culture.

Focusing on key moments of transition, ethnomusicologist and accordion enthusiast Marion Jacobson shows how the instrument came to be celebrated by ethnic musical communities and mainstream fans alike. She also explores the accordion's rebirth in contemporary music, from the parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic to geek rock legends They Might Be Giants to accordion-wielding superstars like Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow.

Loaded with images of gorgeous instruments, virtuoso performers, and rabid fans, Squeeze This! presents the untold story of America's rich accordion culture.

Review

"A serious work of musical and cultural history."--Shelf Awareness

"Using meticulous research, Jacobson not only touches on how topics as diverse as immigration, movies, war, and feminism have influenced the accordion's popularity, but she also finds time to drop in countless little known pop culture nuggets about great accordionists."--Publishers Weekly

"A fascinating cultural history of the most underestimated of instruments."--Booklist

"Wunnerful, wunnerful. . . . A delightful and illuminating surprise."--The Wall Street Journal

"An illuminating and occasionally whimsical account, in keeping with the instrument itself."--Library Journal

"Ethnographically rich, compellingly written, and resting on a solid theoretical and methodological foundation, Marion Jacobson's cultural history of the accordion is a welcome addition to the extant literature on popular music, free-reed instruments, and cultural and diaspora studies."--Italian American Review

About the Author
Marion Jacobson holds a Ph.D. in music and ethnomusicology from New York University. An accordionist herself, she has performed with klezmer bands and accordion bands, and in old-timey jam sessions, but her favorite spot for gigs is the New York City subway.

"Accordion Industrial Complex"
By K. Morrow
I owe it to the author for sharing that hilarious phrase because, speaking as someone who grew up in the Fifties--in the middle of the accordion boom--it really seemed like almost every other household had a child taking accordion lessons. My own husband talks about being dragged off of his chair as a seven year old by the rapidly falling bellows. Actually, I have only recently become infatuated with this darn instrument, and the comprehensive nature of this book has filled me in on about as much accordion history and context as I can handle. It's well written and colorfully illustrated, and overall its content is more survey than encyclopedia, to address another reviewer's complaint. The attention devoted to modern incarnations of accordion bands and festivals is helpful real-time because, hey, I might just want to check out those events in Texas or Sonoma County, California.

an overview of the (mostly) piano accordion
By Zighi
While I am v. pleased to see a new book on the accordion, I was a little disappointed in its contemporary emphasis on what I would categorize as the amateur world of squeezing. I realize that the author is an ethnomusiciologist but it seemed that the s/heroic musicians who forged the accordion's existence were relegated to little more than lists of names; whereas, some of the more 'in your face' performers and 'novelty acts' may have been given an inordinate emphasis. Still, she managed to include virtually everyone! Some references seemed inaccurate; Misspellings and incorrect information appeared throughout including typos (probably needed a better copy editor). Still, the accordion world should welcome this addition; it will serve to fill in the gaps in its history. I appreciate the tribute to some of the major players (some glaring omissions!) who did raise awareness, demonstrated the accordion's special qualities, and greatly contributed to the accordion's presence in world music. It is an enjoyable (not too technical) read, but even some of the mechanical (interior) changes were addressed to show how its evolution ultimately resulted in a superior instrument. Thank you, Sheri

Hippest Instrument in Musical History
By GintGotham
A friend recently sent me a public-radio interview in which Professor Marion Jacobson discusses her fascinating book "Squeeze This! A Cultural History of the Accordion in America." After hearing the broadcast, in which audio samples portray the "scrappy squeezebox" as "most ridiculed" and "kitschy," I asked myself: "Why have I been pumping this infernal `stomach Steinway' (or `navel Novachord') three hours a day for almost sixty-five years?" To answer that question, I ordered the book from Amazon.

Growing up Polish in Chicago during the 1940s, when a salesman from Wilkins School of Music visited us on April 25, 1949, I already knew what an accordion was. With my approval, my dad bought into the concept, and my first lesson was on May 9, 1949. The rest is history--jamming with the likes of the Duke and Gerry; working for Gatemouth, and Fred Wesley. But after reading Ms. Jacobson's scholarly prose, I'm still not sure I can come up with an answer.

Her academic style impresses me, along with the numerous anecdotes and endnotes, colorfully illustrated photographs, humor, and information and links about the history and marketing of the accordion (except for "old-timey jam sessions," she defines concepts I've wondered about for years). However, as well-researched as the story appears to be, Ms. Jacobson relates only a tiny piece of a much larger picture. What I found disappointing was her lack of sensitivity toward my axe, comparing it to the guitar, and perpetuating myths that serious accordionists have been trying to bury for years. She allots inordinate space to talented entertainers like Contino, Welk, and the two Yankovics, while those who made the accordion one of the hippest instruments in musical history are innocently ignored. I can understand the author's fascination with "the amateur world of squeezing" (as one reviewer puts it); the accordion is very difficult to master. But she leaves out the accordionists who motivate us to become what Joshua Camp calls those "serious-chops" guys (or gals).

Fortunately, most of the following artists--living and dead--who are conspicuously absent from this treatise can be heard with a click of the mouse: Nick Ariondo, Wolmer Beltrami, Joe Burke, Lanny Di Jay, Milton DeLugg, Ernie Felice, Gordie Fleming, Richard Galliano, Julie Gardner, Tommy Gumina, Alice Hall, Pete Jolly, Kato Kanako, Gorni Kramer, Mat Mathews, Johnny Meijer, Russ Messina, Mie Miki, Eddie Monteiro (his comments appear on the frontispiece), Joe Natoli, Cory Pesaturo, Leon Sash, George Shearing, Cornell Smelser, Reno Tondelli, Joe Vito, and others too numerous to mention; but they are part of the answer as to why one plays an accordion. To slight these people would be like writing a history of the Republican Party, and omitting Medill, Greeley or Lincoln. For those who know nothing about the accordion, oversights of this kind create a disservice. I feel this book is frightfully lopsided and demonstrates a shortcoming inherent in a lot of academic writing by those with scholarly credentials: it can appear credible to neophytes. There's more to the accordion than "Lady of Spain" or "Who Stole the Keeshka?"

Hopefully, when the sequel to "Squeeze This!" is published, Marion Jacobson will fill us in on the rest of the narrative, because she writes well; but the accordion is more than just "Wunnerful, wunnerful." It's spectacular to us serious-chops guys!
