Good study for Christians at various stages

Completed this study with a group. I wasn't thrilled about doing "another prayer study", but I found this one to be very easy to read, easy to discuss and challenged me in some ways I hadn't considered. Worked well for people at many different stages of their walk with Christ.

This study guide was a big help to me in reinforcing and helping me to apply Bill Hybel's message in his book. I didn't buy the study guide as a part of a class. I have just found that reading the book and reading the study guide has been a tremendous help. I'm glad that I bought the study guide.

I can't put this book down, I am learning so much about a history that has been silenced from our textbooks and teachings. Each oral history feels vibrant. We see the making of history unfold in ways that remind us all to take the next step when injustice stands in our way. Well organized, beautifully written. We owe so much to each person who is interviewed in the book and to the author Fred Pelka whose research is impeccable. As Directing attorney of the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, a key player in the passage of the ADA, I want to strongly recommend Fred Pelka's "What We Have Done ". The thing I loved about Fred's book was the variety of views and memories of the events leading up to the ADA. I was surprised about how much I learned about how things happened from different viewpoints. If you want an intimate view of what it is like to conceive and then pass the most comprehensive disability rights law in the world, don't pass up "What We Have Done"!

The Sages Speak: Rabbinical Wisdom and Jewish Values, by William B. Silverman, sets out the encyclopedic task of ordering rabbinical opinions about various topics, including, God, Man, Prayer, Holiness, Justice, Faith, Eternal Life, The World to Come, and Hope. Each of these chapters is divided into sub-chapters, taking an element of the broader topic and exploring one aspect.

There is a hoary tradition in Judaism for such endeavors. Rabbinical literature is a sprawling corpus, spread across two Talmuds, commentaries, responsa, books and books, and complete command of this literature is for the select few. So, writers like Silverman take this unorganized material and organize it. Taking a passage from the Babylonian Talmud and placing it alongside a story about the Baal Shem Tov which share a common theme.

About the Author
Jane Haddam (b. 1951) is an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988). Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s most recent novels are Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

A Locked Door Mystery

In this Papazoglou novel Patience McKenna is a romance writer attending The Third Annual Conference of the American Writers of Romance. A series of murders begins and Patience has to solve them in order to prove her own innocence. The mystery is a puzzle which includes a locked door and several clues to put together. The latter are mentioned as the story unfolds and then the solution is fully explained at the end.

Off to a Great Start

This is the first of Papazoglou's "Pay McKenna" mysteries. The others are, in order, WICKED, LOVING MURDER, DEATH'S SAVAGE PASSION, RICH, RADIANT SLAUGHTER and ONCE AND ALWAYS MURDER. They can be read in any order, but there's a slight edge to reading them in order if you can.

The central character is a Manhattan-based writer from Old Money New England, so the story takes place in Manhattan, and most of the characters are romance writers or allied trades, with a meeting of the "American Writers of Romance" as the centerpiece. It's a good locked-room mystery, and funny to the point of being hysterical in places. I first read this one about 20 years ago, and not a week goes by even yet that I don't think of Pay's best friend and smile a little. Just buy it. If you're any sort of mystery--or romance--fan, you won't regret it.

Where to go from here: There are two other non-series Papazoglou titles, CHARISMA and SANCTITY, which I would rate a nearer suspense than mystery. More recently, under the pen name "Jane Haddam" the same author has done the "Gregor Demarkian" mysteries.

Wacky Characters and Authentic Local Scenes

Papazoglou's strong suits are her descriptions of wacky characters and authentic local scenes. Among the idiosyncratic people we meet in this story are a fifty-five year old tattoed, coccaine-addicted ex-prostitute and a thirty year old virgin famous for writing the sexiest books in the romance field. There is also one very kleptomaniacal cat. The best New York descriptions include a special Greek restaurant and a trip through parts of 42nd Street and Ninth Avenue.

About the Author

In 2008, President Bush conferred on him the second highest civilian award of the U.S. government, the Presidential Citizen Medal, for his humanitarian work with Prison Fellowship. He is a graduate of Brown University and George Washington Law School, receiving his juris doctor with honors. He served in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Captain. ? About the Author

Alan Meaden is a consultant clinical psychologist working for Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and is the lead for the Trust’s Assertive Outreach and Non-Acute Inpatient Services. He has been involved in research on command hallucinations and the development of theory and practice for their treatment for over a decade. Most recently he has been the supervisor and trainer for therapists on COMMAND: the recent multicentre randomised controlled trial.

Nadine Keen is a chartered clinical psychologist on the COMMAND Trial (CBT for command hallucinations) and at the Psychological Interventions Clinic for outpatients with psychosis, South London and Maudsley Trust.

Robert Aston is a cognitive behavioural therapist at Birmingham University.

Karen Barton is a clinical psychologist at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Sandra Bucci is a lecturer in clinical psychology at the University of Manchester.

Taking responsibility for your life is a must for every maturing Christian. So many times we rely on the church, our spouse, our friends, our family and or just neglect prioritizing the rights things in our life. Doing the right things as well as doing things right is part of the Christian challenge. A excellent small group material for all groups and ages!

This material challenges us to have an intimate, consistent and real relationship with Christ! The initiative to live like Christ comes from this personal and real relationship with our Saviour!
