Grade 5-8-This novel contains some of the best sports writing readers will ever find in a YA novel. Seventh-grader Richard Moncrief, a working-class baseball fanatic, befriends an unusual transfer student. Napoleon Charlie Ellis is from Dominica, plays cricket, speaks grammatically perfect English, and is one of the few black students at their Catholic school in Boston during the 1975 school busing controversy. Richard's dream is for the "Gold Dust Twins," rookies Jim Rice and Fred Lynn, to help the Red Sox win the World Series. His other dream is for Napoleon and himself to become the next Gold Dust Twins-with Richard's knowledge of baseball and Napoleon's natural athletic ability, it's inevitable. Unfortunately, he fails to understand or take into account his friend's dreams, which are very different from his own. Supporting characters are well drawn, with Beverly as a strong female classmate and Butch, the main antagonist. Students unfamiliar with the racial tension of the era may find some references hard to understand. Readers probably won't be familiar with members of the 1970s' Boston Red Sox either, but if they love baseball, it won't matter. True sports fans will identify with Richard's vivid descriptions of the game.

Review for Gold Dust

The book I read was "Gold Dust" by Chris Lynch. What drew my attention to it was that it was based on a kid who was obsessed with baseball. I love baseball, so i figured it was a goods book to read. Richard Riley Moncrief lives in Boston and is going into seventh grade. He loves everything about baseball and his favorite team is the Red Sox. The year that Richard enters seventh grade , a new boy moves to town. He is from Dominica and his name is Napoleon Charlie Ellis. The only sport he knew how to play was cricket. THroughout the story, Richard teaches his new best friend, Napoleon, how to play baseball and get rid of his old cricket habits. They go to the batting cages to work on their skills. They also play around in the schoolyard and go to Fenway Park a lot. If you're wondering how the term "Gold Dust" comes in, it all starts out with two Red Sox, Fred Lynn and Jim Rice. Their nicknames are the gold dust twins, which encourages the two baseball loving boys to change their nicknames to the gold dust twins. I really liked this book and I would give it 4 stars. It was well written, and Lynch does a good job of describing Richard and Napoleon's experiences when they are playing baseball together. He talks about how the crack of the bat feels, and many other things that baseball related people will know. At first, I wasn't liking the book because it moved slowly, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. I would definately reccomend this book to anyone who likes baseball. This book is suitable for all ages.

Written well but don't like baseball

Gold Dust is a well depicted story from the viewpoint of a kid(Richard) who loves baseball. He wants everyone to love baseball just as much as him, even his new friend Napolean. It's like being put straight into the head of a boy who is crazy about baseball. It's even written as if you can hear his thoughts.

Since I don't like baseball very much it was hard to keep reading. If you loved baseball as a kid I highly recommend this book to you. You will re-live your childhood and it will make you laugh at your own mentality that you had. It's an excellent read from young even to adult, for those who love baseball.

I loved the relationship growth that the main character goes through. Anyone can relate with Richard's character change and progression into a young adult, even if they didn't like baseball.

Gold Dust is very well written and is a quick read (I'm not a quick reader either). I would not recommend it for those who don't care for baseball.

Even though this is another coming-of-age book I like the style and the setting in which it is written. The author writes the book from a first person point-of-view, just the way you would think a 12 year old boy would think and talk. The main characters are well described and round characters. To cause conflict and to further the plot, there are a few flat characters who antagonize and help the main character Richard Riley Moncrief to be dynamic and see the situation that Napolean Charlie Ellis is in. Napolean Charlie Ellis, however, is fairly static, the only ways in which he changes is the fact that he develops a real friendship with Richard and is willing to play and enjoy baseball. Richard, on the other hand, undergoes an extremely drastic charcter change. He goes from being closed and simple-minded to being able to think for and stand-up for himself and begins to realize how much race and status quo play in his life and community. He also, for the first time, develops a meaningful friendship that involves feeling for someone else and having someone challenge him to think.
Overall this was an interesting and well-written book. It would be a great book to use with middle-school aged children to urge them to be their own person, think for themselves, and not listen to peer pressure or take other's thoughts and feelings as the truth.

ADVANTAGE

Any factor that increases your winning chances is an advantage. The player who has the most such factors in his or her favor has the advantage in the game; that is, the better winning chances.

Specific advantages fall into categories. For instance, if you have fewer weaknesses than your opponent, you probably have an advantage in pawn structure. In Diagram 1, since White's pawns are in fewer groups than Black's, they are easier to guard. Black's pawns have more weaknesses.

TIME

If you have more pieces developed than your opponent, you probably have an advantage in time. White has a large edge in development in Diagram 2.

Note that White has one less pawn than Black. In order to capture the White b-pawn, Black wasted valuable time and moved the queen several times. As a result, Black now has only three developed pieces, while White's seven pieces are all in action. This gives White a winning superiority in time.

SPACE

Control of the center, more advanced pawns, rooks on open and half-open files -- these are some indicators of an advantage in space. In Diagram 3, White's spatial edge is significant.

MATERIAL

If you have more men or more valuable men than your opponent, you have an advantage in material. In Diagram 4, White has an extra pawn but Black has a rook compared with White's knight. Black therefore has a slight material advantage.

SAFETY

If your king is less exposed than your opponent's, you probably have an advantage in king safety. In Diagram 5, White's king is securely castled. Black's is stuck in the center and dangerously exposed.

TYPES OF ADVANTAGES

Advantages can be temporal, positional, or material. Temporal advantages might include: faster piece development or having been able to force your opponent to make extra pawn moves (instead of developing pieces). Temporal advantages have a way of evaporating, so they should be converted to other types of advantages early in the game. Your opponent will be able to catch up in development (for example) if you don't make something of your early development soon enough.

Positional advantages, such as control of the center, good pawn structure, controlling open or half-open files, and obtaining a safe position for the king, change constantly throughout the game. When you play positionally, you are trying for small advantages -- and sometimes your opponent either doesn't realize what you are doing or doesn't consider those advantages important. But although those little advantages may not amount to much individually, when they're accumulated and cultivated, they can eventually add up to a real positional superiority. To neutralize these advantages your opponent may have to surrender material or submit to a strong attack on his king.

Material advantages, such as trading a knight for a rook, or a queen for two minor pieces, keeping a good bishop, or trading a bad bishop are usually the most decisive.

Advantages in material and pawn structure tend to be more permanent than temporal advantages. If you have an extra pawn, unless something radical happens you will probably still have it ten moves later. Thus, some advantages are more useful, practically speaking, while others are harder to turn into a win.

ANALYZING THE COMPETITION POSITIONALLY

Try to build your game and increase your overall advantages. Reduce the weaknesses in your own position and increase those in your opponent's. To do this, you must be able to evaluate correctly. You must know how to analyze a chess position.

Discussion of pawn structures excellent.

I got this book as part of a bundle of books I purchased. I didn't think much of it. However, I would read it every once in a while when I didn't have a board handy or wanted some "light" reading. Many of the concepts were not new to me (USCF Rating ~1700). However, I found his discussion of different elements of pawn structure to be very informative. Particularly, his detailed discussion of isolated d-pawns, backwards pawns, doubled pawns, and pawn majorities were pretty good I think.
I play many openings which garner the isolated d-pawn (both with and against it) and my study of this topic in this book really helped my play in these positions. He breaks down the isolated d-pawn into strengths, weaknesses, and what to do when you have it and when you are playing against it. These sections I think are the best in the book.
The strength of this book is its simplicity. I think it is important to know the ideas (which you can gain from this book) and to see many concrete examples from master play (which you should find in other books). If you have many books on pawn structure, you may not want this book.
I found the other sections to be not as helpful, because other books I had did a sufficient job in teaching me these concepts. However, I think this is a good book for general positional ideas, particularly in the realm of pawn structures, which is an important one in chess.
I recommend this book for players under 1500. Players over 1500 may have much of this knowledge and I would recommend Silman's The Amateur's Mind to those.

Important General Strategic Ideas

Wow! This book came as a surprize from Pandolfini - it is the best book he has written and it is good! If you are rated in the 900 to 1400 range then you will be in tune with "Weapons of Chess".

The book contains a nice touch on the "use of Pawns", isolated "d" Pawns, and Pawn structures and use. Then, the use of Bishops such as the bad Bishop, Bishop pair, Bishops of opposite colors, fianchetto, etc... The use of Rooks such as doubled rook effectivelness. After this book you might consider getting "How to Reassess your Chess" by Silman as the next step, and along with this book at this level getting "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" for nice games with important strategic concepts.

Bravo for Pandolfini on this one!

The first book all chess players should get.

Please don't be mislead by all the bad reviews. There is a simple reason why many of the readers give this book a bad review: they probably already know the material.
If you are already a 1500 player, this book will probably not help you much. If you are 1000 it will be divine inspiration. The truth is that Bruce Pandolfini _regularly_ churns out positively horrid books. This is one exception that should be read by any weak player....if you already know the material in this, you shouldn't be reading Pandolfini level books anyway.
By the way, this is one of the three books I recommend for players, the other two (in order of playing strength) are: Reassess your chess (Silman) Play/Think Like a grandmaster (Kotov).
This book is for the smart beginner after he has played a bit.

Get Your Small Group Out of the Boat

Ortberg's small group series are among the best, if used with his teaching DVD's (Zondervan, but you'll have to find that elsewhere, it appears).

This particular study appeals to a broad range of backgrounds, and experience levels. We all wrestle with "staying comfortable" vs. "stepping out in faith" when the situation calls for it. Through excellent groups discussion and Scripture investigation questions it is easy to guide a group to go beyond their current "comfort zone" and take steps of faith "outside the boat."

But purchasethe DVD for best results (use an Internet search engine and you should find it quickly). Ortberg is a master teacher, and his 25-30 minute teaching is a must.

Challenging to me at this time in my life

This book has been out for a while, but the title always made me laugh, so I had to read it. Ortberg does a great job challenging the Christian to trust God more in the way we live. It's not what we do, it's how we do it, and the way that Ortberg presents as the most godly fashion is to be willing to let God be God and to trust Him where He guides us. I, for one, don't want to live a life of regret, so I was personally challenged right now and am very glad I read it. It has given me confidence to take a step of faith where I'm not sure if I am going to sink or swim. OK, Jesus, I'm coming out--please help me to walk.

The best Christian writer of our day

It's funny -- I love James Taylor and I love John Ortberg. I think the commonality there is that they are such great wordsmiths. Very honest, plain-spoken, and yet so much is contained in so little said. Ortberg is not a poet, but he's able to see great truth in simple things.

If you avoid being confronted with truth, then avoid this book. But if you're ready to face it, then read it. He's the CS Lewis of our day.

Purchased at my wife's request, and she LOVES it. Sh-h-h, me too.

My wife begged me to order this "Action Plan" with the "Devotional." Action Plan is designed to work for a small group, SS class, Bible study, or even a non religious group as long as they realize it relies heavily on Bible scripture and a Christian belief of God, His saving grace, and His power to help women, "even for girls who don't crave carrots," as the NYT bestselling author Lysa Terkeurst states.
My wife knows it is supposed to last over several weeks, meetings, or whatever, but she dives into the pages like it's a novel eager to absorb all of the inspiration and assurances that she finds in rereading the original "Made to Crave" book. She loves original, and now the devotional, plus the action plan books. I love her so much, and she's so lovely (even over age 60-don't tell her I told you that), and of course she received all 3 books. My wife is worth the cost. She works hard at maintaining a healthy weight, exercise, food control, and has success due to prayer, persistence, and inspirational things like her "Made to Crave" trilogy.

"A POWERFUL, inspiring, encouraging, THOUGHT-PROVOKING devotional and action plan, just like the original 'Made to Crave' was," she said. "Thoroughly seasoned with scriptures that have been very practical tools to help me in my weight-loss struggle.

I like that this book includes lists of food with carbs, fiber, etc. listed. Really like the Scripture verses to keep motivated and focused on God. I like that there is places to write personal thoughts or goals; able to keep track of weight loss and measurements. This is a great, fun way to lose weight and not have to endure the guilt placed on you by others.

Grade 9 Up–Three teens–friends since their first day of Catholic school–tease, pummel, and support one another in this story set in a working-class Boston diocese. The narrator, Drew, like his dad, is a skeptical observer of the ways that power plays out in the classroom and church; fatherless Skitz is one of those kids who is not going to stay in the system much longer; and Hector–well, something is really eating at Hector, the devout Altar Boy of the Year. The three have vowed to stand by one another, come what may. What comes is a growing awareness of the personal problems of the men who are supposed to be shepherding them through adolescence. Fathers Blarney, Mullarkey, and Shenanigan, as the boys call them, have an inordinate hold over their lives, both in school and beyond. The charming and disarming Father Mullarkey is a bit of a renegade and the two older priests engage in petty cruelties and power games. The evocation of parish life and parochial-school experience is pitch perfect, as are the boys ribald camaraderie and sports obsession. As Drews awareness of the priests fallibility grows, so does the eerie sense that one of them is harming Hector in secret–and that the abuse may be sexual. This vivid, fast-paced, hard-hitting novel is no diatribe; instead it conveys with texture and conviction the damage that young people can be subjected to when adult influence goes unchecked. But as Hector falls into a disturbing, furious silence, Drew feels helpless and frightened and wonders if his friend is suffering the unthinkable violence of sexual abuse, perpetrated by a school priest. Using rough language as he writes in Drew's authentic voice ("Everyone joked about priests being 'fender benders'"), Lynch keeps the story of abuse true to Drew's perspective: horrors that Drew doesn't want to confront aren't spelled out. The vivid parts in this potent novel don't quite meld into a cohesive whole. A story line about a hip, young priest creates dramatic, compelling scenes, but the teasing questions about the man's character threaten to overwhelm the story. The boys' friendship, expressed in pitch-perfect trash-talk, and the frank dialogue about organized religion, loyalty, and personal responsibility will captivate readers the most. A novel that fearlessly explores loyalty in the face of adversity

Since they were snot-nosed six-year-olds, Skitz, Drew and Hector have been inseparable. Skitz is the unpredictable one, with no filter between his brain and his mouth; Hector is the strong, silent one; and Drew is the one who keeps their group together. Now they're faced with another trinity --- their Catholic school faculty, which consists of Monsignor Blarney, Father Shenanigan, and the outspoken renegade, Father Mullarkey --- that threatens to break them apart and send them in three different, dangerous directions.

Drew worries about Hector the most. Normally nonviolent, Hector flies into a rage when Skitz suggests that Father Shenanigan might be sexually abusing him. Hector spends more time than ever away from Skitz and Drew, becomes withdrawn and secretive about his home life, and seems to become more ill every day, dosing himself with Saint Joseph baby aspirin and RC Cola. Drew knows that no matter what the Fathers say or do to him, he must keep his promise to Hector: to wait for Hector if he "falls behind."

Skitz, never the most stable of people, becomes even more impulsive and erratic when he learns that he is one incident away from being kicked out of school, following the breaking of a window. Drew feels there is almost nothing he can do to make Skitz act "normal" until he discovers the real reason behind Skitz's inability to sit down and shut up at crucial moments. Now, he not only has to save Skitz from Hector, but he must save Skitz from himself.

In a time of controversy over teacher-student relationships, especially where the Catholic Church is concerned, SINS OF THE FATHERS fearlessly explores what it means to be loyal in the face of a seemingly impenetrable adversary. It's true that Chris Lynch's disjointed writing can be a difficult read, but stick with the book. Drew is admirable even in his most obnoxious moments, and the ending is hopeful if horrifying.

Amazing book from Chris Lynch

After my disappointment at several of Chris Lynch's other books, I don't know what possesed me to pick up Sins of the Fathers. However, I am so glad that I did. This book is simply brilliant. There's really not much more to say.

"At six-fifteen on a borderline blizzard morning, outside my bedroom window, Skitz Fitzsimmons reared his ugly head. I was preoccupied and groggy at the same time, so I didn't even notice him there until he was staring back at me like a lunatic mirror reflection. He had one eye squinted and the other eye wide and his mouth was pinched up in a pucker and shifted way over to the side. Like he always looked."

So begins the story told by Drew St. Cyr, one-third of a close-knit tribe of young men who attend Blessed Sacrament, a Catholic school in Boston that is attached to the big old church of the same name. Drew's two "partners in crime" are star altar boy Hector Fossas and the wild and crazy Skitz Fitzsimmons.

"Skitz was just along for the ride mostly, but Hector came from one of those very serious families who believed the Church was everything and everything they said was true no matter how sci-fi it sounded. He didn't believe it was everything, exactly, but he believed it was right up there. He somehow managed to be all right anyway.

" 'I don't believe you will tell me shuddup again,' Hector said calmly.

" 'I do believe I am telling you shuddup right now,' Skitz said.

"They really are good friends. It's just that a lot of the time it's a good thing that they have me in between them. I have fine interpersonal skills."

In the alternately dark and funny SINS OF THE FATHERS, Drew narrates the story of the trio's close friendship amidst the life-altering events that entangle all three at the same time that a new priest is assigned to the Blessed Sacrament parish.

"This was our new priest? This was like nobody's priest.

"In addition to his eye-catching entrance, he was a whole eyeful himself. He was a revelation. He was a whole book of revelations. We had never seen a father like Father Mullarkey, and I'd bet nobody else had either. First, he dressed like a free-walking citizen rather than a priest. A big fan of denim, of ripped denim and patches and T-shirts that looked like he was spray painted with a hose. "What else he was very much like, was a Hells Angels motorcycle club guy, which meant he looked like a big meat-eating hippy with long hair, an acre of ginger beard, and strappy, bumpy muscles. He looked like a hippy that ate hippies. He sounded like a talking bear."

As he gets to know the bear-like priest (and Father Mullarkey's love for greasy food, alcoholic beverages, and late-Sixties rock), Drew is fascinated at how the new priest so frequently strays "from the assigned text," the official Church teachings. Meanwhile, the official Church--personified by Monsignor Blarney and Father Shenanigan--is in the process of trying to sort the three young men into categories. This sorting process will hack at their bonds of their friendship. But it is the new priest who seeks to galvanize Drew, urging him to hold on tight.

" 'You've got a good little tribe there, Andrew. And all of life winds up being driven by tribes. Your family, your school, your profession, your denomination. Your friends. Your tribe is quality. I wish I could join your tribe.'

" 'You can. You have.'

" 'Thanks. But I can only ever be an honorary member, which, I will remain honored to be for the rest of my life. Closer to home, though, stick tight with the tribe you have. Look out for one another. If you ever can't count on your tribe, on the people who are supposed to be there for you, if they, in fact, turn out to be your problem, then you are well and truly wasted, my young friend.' "

There are glimpses of a nun or two, along with a mother calling from inside a house. But otherwise there are no females in sight. This is a harsh and unforgiving story of male relationships that has me reminiscing about the tribes of my own adolescence, those guys who played such pivotal roles in making me the guy I am today.
