This book highlights an original approach to the issue of drug policy and the author provides a necessary view on the topic that does not just consider the ‘war on drugs’ approach. Rather than focus on drugs as a problem or people involved with drugs as victims or beneficiaries, the author argues for a critical criminological theoretical approach that views drugs as a part of normal social experience. He argues for a realist approach to drug policy that views drugs in terms of how they can be part of society in ways that enhance rather than diminish the lives of all people. This book provides a valuable addition to an overview of such a worldwide problem and one that provides important new insights on drug policy.

About the Author

Henry H. Brownstein is a Senior Fellow in the Substance Abuse, Mental Health and Criminal Justice Studies Department at NORC at the University of Chicago, USA. For almost 30 years he has been studying drug policy, drugs and crime, and drug markets. He has published several books and dozens of articles and book chapters on topics including drug policy, drugs and violence, drug markets, qualitative research methods, and the relationship between research and policy. He earned his PhD in sociology in 1977 from Temple University, USA.

Roma Ben-Atar resisted until late in life the urging of her family to share the

What Time and Sadness Spared is a journey of both loss and
endurance, moving with shocking speed from a carefree adolescence in upper-middle-class Warsaw
to the horrors of the Final Solution. The young girl sees her neighborhood transformed into a
ghetto populated by skeletal figures both alive and dead. Unbelievably, things only grow worse
as this ruin gives way to the death factories of Majdanek and Auschwitz and the death marches of
1945. Life in the camps changes her in less than a day, as if "the person in my body was a
stranger I had never met." Her only consolation is to lie on her wooden bunk, no mattress, and
speak to the soul of her mother, who, like virtually her entire family, had already been swept
away. Roma must summon astonishing powers of adaptation simply to survive, bringing her finally
through the wreckage of postwar Europe and to an entirely new life in Israel.

In this
unique family collaboration Roma Ben-Atar's son Doron, a historian who brings with him fluency
in psychoanalysis, contributes through his commentary an awareness of the difficulties presented
by historical narrative and memory. A visitor to the much-changed sites in which his mother grew
up and was interned by the Nazis, he also voices the perspective of the survivors' children and
their ambivalence over being "protected" from this past. As the generation that endured the
camps passes from this world, What Time and Sadness Spared illustrates with particular urgency
the historical responsibilities of the survivors' descendants, who must become the new vessels
for a story that will not remain alive on its own but demands our courage and
curiosity.

Doron Ben-Atar points out in the prologue that this book is a collaboration between a Holocaust survivor and her historian son. Roma Ben-Atar came from an upper-middle- class Ashkenazi Jewish family in Warsaw and experienced the terror of concentration camps. On September 26, 1939, the Germans entered Warsaw, and Roma Ben-Atar relives the changes into a living hell of fear, hunger, and death. She relates the horrors of the camps and the Warsaw Ghetto. "The Nazis tormented and killed us in plain sight of the residents of Lublin." She was then sent to a camp when she was 16, there wavering between acceptance of death and an irrational hope that she would "somehow survive this ordeal and rebuild a life." This remarkable book is a narrative of things that happened to a young girl told by an older woman. There are the memories themselves, there are the mother's recollections of what she thought as she went through the events, and there are the reflections of a mature woman about how she coped. It has an eloquent statement by one survivor, which is by itself powerful. A compelling memoir

The main character in this moving book is a teenaged girl, Roma, who is separated from her affluent family and sent to a concentration camp at the age of 16, where she never knows if she will be in the next group of inmates selected to die in the crematorium. Her only solace from the daily horrors is the imagined conversations she has at night, before going to sleep, with her mother. The story of how she manages to survive with her humanity intact and start a new life in Israel makes for gripping reading; I read this book in one sitting. Especially interesting is the epilogue, where she talks about what it felt like to return to Poland nearly 60 years after she left. Adding to the authenticity of the historical details is the fact that Roma's co-author, her son, is a history professor. He writes about the difficulties faced by himself and his mother in writing about her past. Rather than just telling a story, this book addresses the problem of reconciling memory with historical fact, and what it means to write about your past so many years later.

Necessary (?) book

I did the Unglued book study with a friend. The Participant's Guide should be used when using the video study. It is also geared as a daily study/journaling exercise. Did not use most of what was in it. Would only recommend it if using the video.

Study Setup

I' finding this guide very hard to follow. My group is not using the video program. It would be better if there were two separate study programs, one for those using the video, and one for those not using the video. My group leader is having to create her own study guide to make it easier to study without the video.

This book has been amazing encouragement and teaching for me. Its easy, fun, reading, but deep and rich. One of my favorite things she talks about is "Imperfect progress" so many times we get hopeless to change our bad habits or responses but when you look at it with this perspective its encouraging. THIS book was so good i bought a second copy to send to a friend who lives overseas and i bought the devotional!!!!!!!!!!

I found this book a very different and interesting read.I have read several books about Johnny Cash and June Carter,and found them all very interesting.I have been a Cash fan ever since he started in the music business in the early 50'sand still enjoy the many songs he recorded.I saw him in Montreal way back when he brought the Statlers with him as an opening act; and later on here in Toronto when June Carter and their son John accompanied him .It is an understatement to say that being a fan of the Cashes and the Carters has been full of surprises as well as enjoyment over the years.
Cash's music has varied greatly over the years,and his life experiences have been even more so.To say that he was a Legend,is also an understatement.
When I first heard Kristofferson describe him ,as he did in my title;I really believed he summed up Johnny Cash as well as anyone could,and he probably knew and understood Cash and his musuc as well any person.
This book is real different from anything else I've read that tries to explain Cash ,his music and why he was such an icon.
I would say that this is a very studious book,in that the author must have done a huge amount of research on all the things that have been written or recorded about Cash.There are 24 pages of notes detailing the sources of information the author must have gathered perused and/or read.This alone,must have been a monumental task,and then to use it all to write this book.I also had the feeling that the author had never met Cash,nor spent much time with family or musicians who worked with and knew Cash intimately.An awful lot has been recorded about Cash over the years,and if you have followed Cash as long as I have,there is not too much in this book that will be new or surprising to you.
What the author does is take all this information and sort it out into nine choices that Cash made in both his personal life and career that resulted in him having one of the most interesting careers in music;and why he was so popular with such a wide spectrum of musical interests.
Even if you've read a lot about Johnny Cash and June Carter;you should find this a very interesting attempt to explain them.

Here is a world inhabited by beings one step down on the evolutionary and social scale from the bullies in Slot Machine: ignorant thugs like Mick's older brother Terry (a terrifying villain if ever there was one), whose idea of fun is to get wildly drunk and beat up non-whites; or get wildly drunk and bet on dog fights; or just get wildly drunk. In this tightly paced examination of inner-city life and race relations, Lynch treads very close to the same ground as Chris Crutcher. However, there are no hip adult role models to smooth the way for the young folks, and forget about the protagonist winding up with the girl of his dreams (although he does bed a friend's mother between titles 2 and 3). After enduring beatings, alcoholic excess and humiliations too numerous to catalogue, Mick is ultimately able to rise above his milieu, but the pervasive violence and morally ambiguous resolution make this series even more disquieting than Gypsy Davey. Grade 7-10?Fifteen-year-old Mick, disenchanted with his dysfunctional Irish-American family, leaves home and moves in with his friend Sully's family. Mick feels trapped by his abusive, obnoxious father; ineffectual mother; and Terry, his sadistic older brother. Terry's latest idea of dogfighting inspires Mick to compete with him. Finding the right dog to beat Terry's fierce canine becomes Mick's obsession, and a means of dealing with his brother's brutality. The final dogfight with Terry provides an abrupt ending to a story that has much potential but is lacking in impact due to the one-dimensional characters. While these personalities may have been better established in the first two entries in the series, YAs unfamiliar with those books will have trouble identifying with any of the characters here, including Mick, whose true nature is not revealed until the final chapter. The crisp, raw language forces readers to concentrate on the dialogue in order to comprehend the plot and the characters' motives. Lynch has proven himself to be a quality writer in Iceman and Gypsy Davey (both HarperCollins, 1994). This book is obviously a departure from that norm.?Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA

This book is great because it keeps you wondering!

In Chris Lynch's novel, Blood Relations, fifteen year old MIke, is having sibling problems while his parents are away for the weekend. The main character, Mike, is left alone with his older brother while his parents are away visiting some friends. Mike's brother throws a party for his friends every year but this year's is worse than ever! Mike wants nothing to do with it. Mike's brother goes as far as sacrificing a goat's life, and that's where Mike draws the line and leaves town before they all sober up. Mike and a couple of friends stay over night at a motel about 50 miles away. When Mike goes back, he decides to go to his best friend's house to stay until his parents get back. When his parents do come back, Mike gets a job at their bar, but he refuses to go home. Mike gets kicked out of his best friend's parent's house for starting a fire while trying to cook supper. Where can he turn now? You'll never know unless you read this book... I enjoyed this book very much! It keeps you trying to guess where he's going to go next.

Three critical policy analytical lenses are used to evaluate the inherent complexity of designing post-Kyoto climate policy: the politics of scale; the politics of ideology; and the politics of knowledge. The politics of scale lens focuses on the theme of temporal and spatial discounting observed in human societies and how it impacts the allocation of environmental commons and natural resources across space and time. The politics of ideology lens focuses on the themes of risk and uncertainty perception in complex, pluralistic human societies. The politics of knowledge lens focuses on the themes of knowledge and power dynamics in terms of governance and policy designs, such as marketization of climate governance observed in the Kyoto institutional regime.

From Europe's high society to the academic circles in the US

The husband and wife writing team of Judith Michael have produced certain popular novels which are NOT the typical, superficial, and forgettable reads that flood the market. Although in Deceptions, they do lure readers with a soap opera plot (twins switching places), and the reliability of glamorous and exotic locations such as London and China, the authors have included sharp and witty insights and observations in several of the novel's scenarios. We learn about the strong bond between identical twins, Sabrina and Stephanie, and how they developed into two different women leading two different lives. Thankfully, this is not a good twin/evil twin plot. We become immersed in Sabrina's exclusive world of London high society, antique dealerships, and exquisitely designed townhouses. Her more brazen personality allows her to survive quite nicely and make astute dealings among London's elite. Stephanie lives more obscurely in a small university town in the States with her professor husband, Garth. Their domestic, suburban life with their two children and supportive neighbors is surprisingly realistic and at times endearing. The major premise is that the sisters tire of the complications in their lives and decide to switch places. The novel is well structured as the reader flows from Stephanie's adjustment to Sabrina's jet-set life while Sabrina brings her strength and determination to life as a suburban professor's wife. Deceptions is definitely escape literature, but an intelligent read. If you enjoy reading good descriptions of the finer things in life and excellent character development, this book comes highly recommended

Deceptions is the stuff guilty pleasures are made of

Need a great beach read this summer? Look no further. From the husband-and-wife writing team of Judith Michael comes this potboiler which plays on one of the oldest fantasies in the book: What if you not only had a twin, but decided one day to trade places... just for a little while. What begins as a lark for sisters Stephanie and Sabrina quickly turns into so much more in this surprisingly satisfying read in which, perhaps not surprisingly, we are taught to be grateful for what we have for the grass is not always greener on the other side. For most of us, the perhaps unconscious thrill lies in the story of Stephanie, the twin whose life in suburbia has become almost stifling, especially when compared to that of her exotic, exciting twin sister, Lady Sabrina Longworth. Quicker than you can say, "Hey, what if we traded places?" Stephanie is living the high life, while Sabrina is trading cocktail parties for backyard bar-b-ques. This is classic Judith Michael, who for several years stirred the imagination by taking classic cases of "what if" and spun them into fanciful, frothy books. "What if... you won the lottery?" Altar Ego: Becoming Who God Says You Are is an upbeat, realistic, motivational text written with a pastoral voice. Craig Groeschel humbly, frankly, and succinctly challenges his readers to set aside the views they have of themselves and those they have adopted based on cultural norms in order to more fully embrace the vision God has for those who seek to follow God's will and walk in God's way. Living into the "altar ego" established by God for God's people requires ongoing acts of intentional obedience, and is a lifestyle worth pursuing. Rather than merely illuminating a path established millenia ago, Groeschel explores his own journey while recognizing it is not yet complete and invites others to begin or continue down the same road. In short, this book offers an easy to read, positive, and practical approach to living out conservative Christianity.

Insecurity? Overinflated pride? This book will set you free!

I don't think I really ever realized how destructive the disease of believing lies about yourself really is. Until I read this book, my feelings of insecurity in some areas and over compensating ego in other has felt normal. It's not what God's word says about us. Craig Groeschel masterfully takes you on a journey to discover who you truly are and helps you practically surrender your life to God. Life-changing!
