Shanghai grew rapidly in the decades before the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949. The population continued expanding over the subsequent 30 years, but the housing stock did not: millions of residents occupied tiny spaces in deteriorating buildings. Since the 1990s, high rises and shopping centers have replaced most of those buildings. In the process, many people were forced out of their homes without what they considered adequate compensation. This book introduces victims of 'domicide' who fought back. Based on extensive interviews, five lively case studies explore the motivations and strategies of people who challenged the city's right to take away their beloved homes. Some petitioned government offices for redress, some studied housing law and filed suit, some tried to attract media attention, and some appealed to historic preservationists. Only one found satisfaction. The stories are told almost entirely from the point of view of the dispossessed homeowners; officials and developers declined to offer their perspectives. As the dispossessed are well aware, Shanghai's movers and shakers have made tremendous profits from its amazing real estate boom. This book gives voice to those who lost out. Exhilarating Saga of Domicide and the Fight for Social Justice in China

This is a wise and fearless book, gripping from beginning to end. Qin Shao is a brilliant writer who delivers a volume that is investigative reporting, history, sociology, law and political science wrapped around a set of moving stories. The people whose tales she tells are creative, angry, despairing, hopeful and inspirational. They fight, for years, the loss of their homes and their past. SHANGHAI GONE is a saga of remarkable people fighting relentlessly for social justice. This is a tale known by few. It should be known by many.

"Shanghai Gone" is a far cry from the dry academic text I admittedly (and so very incorrectly) expected it to be. While clearly well-researched and thoroughly documented, it is a page-turner nearly impossible not to finish in one sitting. That's partially because it's about people, and for people--and also because Shao is clearly passionate about those people, and the topic about which she writes. That passion oozes off the pages, instilling in the reader a vivid understanding, and a shock and anger, about a world unknown to most (although it shouldn't be). Through remarkable accounts of those whom have suffered the troubling reformations of their city--homes destroyed, freedoms stripped--Shao poetically tells these stories, giving justice to the people who have suffered by informing the world about Shanghai's rebirth and what it took to get there. Shao, clearly unafraid, has written something which will undoubtedly hold in life's `test of time'; it is thorough, beautifully written and a true telling of history in one of the world's greatest cities.

Muckracking book on Modern China

It is a history-argument book that uses sources to narrate a Modern China. A China that exists not in our opinions, but instead focuses on the real problems of Chinese Residency pertaining to Shanghai.
Imminent Domain has a lot in common with this book.
While, not necessarily entertaining, it does provide narrative of where the Chinese legal culture is today. As well as addressing the main issue of the book: Forced Eviction.
It narrates a story, through the eyes of the Chinese Citizens and their experiences, failures, and successes; in dealing with District Imposed Forced Eviction.
Although, it is written above average for a history book, it fails on giving a perspective of the District or even the National Chinese Government's perspective.
Nevertheless it draws attention to a real problem in Current China. (As of 1993-2011 China)
