Marshal Zhukov's Greatest Battles, by Georgi K. Zhukov

Considered by some to be the greatest general of World War II, General Georgi Zhukov served as the Chief of Staff of the Soviet High Command, leading Soviet troops against Germans in key battles of the war. In his account of four major campaigns in the war—the defense of Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk, and the advance on Berlin—Zhukov describes his experiences preparing for German attacks, organizing counter-strikes, assessing the enemy, and issuing the orders that pushed the front west, towards Germany's capital. Zhukov also tells of his extensive arguments with Stalin during the war, and the political alliances and rivalries among the U. S. S. R.'s generals throughout the conflict.

Review
For anyone seriously interested in the history of the second world war it is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the very few books… that are of crucial importance. (The Economist)

Probably the single most important memoir by a Russian military leader to reach the general public in the West. (The New York Times)

About the Author
Georgi K. Zhukov (1896-1974) was one of the most important Soviet military commanders of the twentieth century. Harrison E. Salisbury (1908-1993) was the author of Black Night, White Snow and The 900 Days. David M. Glantz, editor of The Journal of Slavic Military Studies, lives in Carlisle, PA, near Harrisburg.

This is the real thing
By Kenneth Le Abeywickrama
Western writing about the Eastern Front tends towards melodrama and are patronising of the Soviets because of the past Cold War mentality. Most people are unaware that the most decisive and the largest battles of WW11 were on the Eastern Front: Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk. The well documented stories of Dunkirk, Battle of Britain, Normandy, North Africa, and Hollywood's celluloid myths about these are eclipsed in reality by the sheer size and ferocity of the war in the Eastern Front. The world will never see land battles of this enormous size again. And in these wars which produced a clutch of brilliant military commanders on both sides, Marshal Georgi Zhukov was surely the greatest of all.

This book is factually very interesting to the student of military history and Salisbury's editing and notes are excellent. The only drawback, as usual, is the lack of larger detailed maps to follow the campaigns. It is also interesting to political students for the glimpses of Stalin as Soviet Supreme Commander behind this gigantic enterprise. He comes out much better than in the descriptins by Western writers, despite his initial blunders in this war when he failed to recognise the German threat.

The Epic Memoirs of the Greatest Soldier and Commander
By Julia V.
I ordered the book for my husband since he likes the military history. I've checked the book and want to compare it with the original Zhukov's memoirs. Yes,I've read an original Russian copy of the book that was first published in 1960 during the Soviet regime. I can tell the Russian one like 5 or more times bigger. It contains photos of the Marshal himself in different ages and stages of his career as well as photos from archives of the Wars. He'd started his military career before the revolution of 1917. The Russian version also describes a big part of the Marshal's life, not only the battles. His incredibly hard life as a child, those restrictions that he'd faced in the Soviet country. His 3 heart attacks that gave him not the wars but some of the heads of the Soviet regime. After the Great Victory, Soviet people treated Zhukov like the Savior and for sure Stalin'd seen him like the rival. The only thing that saved Marshal's life that time was Stalin's apprehension of the people who would never forgive the execution. Stalin's followers have also tried to hold the Marshal as far from the power as it was possible. The full version of the book would give you much more information and help to understand how he had become the one of the greatest generals of the history. I wish they would have the full version available in English. But for those who interested only in description of the battles it is a good book. Everything is proving by historians. That time the Soviet government's had the tendency to lower numbers of fallen and injured solders rather than to increase them.

Marshal Zhukov was Russia's greatest World War II general and probably the greatest military figure to emerge from that war. In this account he tells for the first time the story of four of the most colossal military engagements of our day - the Battle of Moscow, the Battle of Stalingrad, the little known, yet crucial, Battle of Kursk-Orel and the climactic Battle of Berlin. This account of four of World War II's most colossal battles presents these epic conflicts from the perspective of the man largely responsible for Russia's mot decisive victories during the Patriotic War. But this is not merely military history. Marshal Zhukov reveals the inside story of conflicts and controversy between himself and Josef Stalin. Her writes in intimate details of discussions in the Kremlin leading to the critical decisions in World War II. He levies savage indictments against a number of Soviet military men. Marshal Zhukov in not only a towering military figure. He has participated in some of the most dramatic political events of the post war years. The Marshal's account of his greatest battles not only illuminates the history and course of World War II. It throws penetrating light on the muderous quarrels which raged within the Kremlin even while Russia's fate hung in the balance and Hitler's armies swept to the outskirts of Leningrad and Moscow and surged across the Ukraine, capturing Kiev and driving on to Stalingrad. Marshal Zhukov's narrative is presented with an introductory analysis and commentary by Harrison E. Salisbury, author of THE 900 DAYS. With maps, photos, 304 pages.

History teachers aren’t expected to teach science, math teachers aren’t expected to teach social studies; so why are all teachers responsible for teaching reading? The answer is simple. Not bad, especially the first four chapters....
By Don D. Bouchard
I am using this as a text for a Literacy Across the Curriculum course in a teacher education program. The first four chapters are useful for pre-service teachers across the content areas, and across the K-12 spectrum. One criticism would be that Chapter four takes the readers into a rather lengthy description of what administration and community should be doing to aide the classroom teacher...not too useful to pre-grad students, in my opinion....

Excellent resource with ideas/worksheets to use
By K. Thatcher
Excellent resource with ideas/worksheets to use. The table of contents is NOT helpful as it does not list the actual reading strategies, resources, or graphic organizers, but what is actually in the book is VERY helpful.

This book gave me a flavor of the aquatic terrain I could expect to find on a Florida fishing trip. I am very satisfied with it. Mr. Sargent's other books are good too, at least the Tarpon Book and the Trout Book.

About the Test
Who Takes These Tests and What Are They Used For?
The five parts of the Ohio Graduation Tests are aligned to Ohio’s academic content
standards in mathematics, writing, reading, science, and social studies, which were
adopted by the State Board of Education.
The graduating class of 2007 was the first class responsible for taking the OGT
and passing all five tests as a graduation requirement. Students must pass these tests
in order to earn an Ohio high-school diploma. Students in grades 3 through 8 take
Achievement Tests.
Is There a Registration Fee?
No.
When and Where Is the Test Given?
Students take the OGT for the first time in the spring of their sophomore year. If
they do not pass, students can continue to take the tests in the fall and spring of their
junior and senior years, and in the summer. The OGT is administered as follows:
• Spring of 10th grade
• Summer between 10th and 11th grade (optional)
• Fall and spring of 11th grade
• Summer between 11th and 12th grade (optional)
• Fall and spring of 12th grade
Tests are given in school. Students have up to two-and-a-half hours to take each of
the tests.
Test Accommodations and Special Situations
Federal law requires every student to take the OGT or an alternate assessment.
Every effort is made for students with disabilities seeking a standard high school
diploma to take the OGT. Students whose Individual Education Plan (IEP) excuses
them from having to pass the OGT to graduate may be awarded a diploma.
Students whose primary language is not English must achieve passing scores on
the OGT in order to be awarded a diploma. However, bilingual forms of the OGT are
available. English audio CD-ROMs, large-print formats, and oral translation scripts
are also available to those requiring such accommodations.
Additional Information and Support
Additional resources to help you prepare to take the OGT can be found on the Ohio
Department of Education Web site at http://www.ode.state.oh.us.
 How to Use This Book
What Do I Study First?
Read over the review sections and the suggestions for test taking. Studying the
review sections thoroughly will reinforce the basic skills needed to do well on the test.
Be sure to take the practice tests to become familiar with the format and procedures
involved in taking the actual OGT.
When Should I Start Studying?
It is never too early to start studying for the OGT. The earlier you begin, the more
time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate! Cramming is not an
effective way to study because it does not allow you the time needed to learn the test
material. The sooner you learn the format of the exam, the more time you will have to
familiarize yourself with the exam content.
Overview of the OGT in Mathematics
The 44 questions on the mathematics portion of the OGT are based on five broad
strands, or standards, as follows:

1. Number, Number Sense, and Operations (approximately 15%
of the test)
2. Measurement (approximately 15% of the test)
3. Geometry and Spatial Sense (approximately 20% of the test)
4. Patterns, Functions, and Algebra (approximately 25% of the test)
5. Data Analysis and Probability (approximately 25% of the test)
The test consists of 32 multiple-choice items, 5 short-answer items, and 1 extended response
item. In addition, there are six experimental questions. These are unscored.
You will not know which questions are unscored, so do your best on all of them.
Multiple-choice items require you to select the correct response from a list of four
options. Short-answer and extended-response items require you to generate a written
response. A short-answer item requires a brief response, usually a few sentences or a
numeric solution to a straightforward problem. An extended-response item requires
you to solve a more complex problem or task and to provide a more in-depth response.
The questions typically ask you to show your work or calculations, explain your reasoning,
and justify the procedures you used.
Short-answer items may each take up to five minutes to complete, and responses
receive a score of 0, 1, or 2 points. Extended-response items may each require 5 to 15
minutes to complete, and responses receive a score of 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 points.
Brief descriptions of the levels of complexity used in item development include
the following:
• Low Complexity: Items rely heavily on recall and recognition of
facts, definitions and procedures. Items typically specify what
the students are to do and often involve carrying out a specified,
routing, procedure. (Approximately 25% of the items)
• Moderate Complexity: Items require more interpretation of
a problem or situation and choice among alternative solution
strategies than low complexity items. Students are expected
to make decisions about what to do, using informal reasoning
and problem-solving strategies. The solution process ordinarily
requires more than one step. (Approximately 50% of the items)
• High Complexity: Items require more sophisticated analysis,
planning, and reasoning in more complex or non-routine problem
situations. Students are often asked to think in an abstract
or sophisticated way and to justify their reasoning and solution
process. (Approximately 25% of the items)

Test-Taking Strategies
What to Do before the Test
• Pay attention in class.
• Carefully work through the chapters of this book. Mark any
topics that you find difficult, so that you can focus on them
while studying and get extra help if necessary.
• Take the practice tests and become familiar with the format
of the OGT. When you are practicing, simulate the conditions
under which you will be taking the actual test. Stay calm and
pace yourself. After simulating the test only a couple of times,
you will feel more confident, and this will boost your chances
of doing well.
• Students who have difficulty concentrating or taking tests
in general may have severe test anxiety. Tell your parents, a
teacher, a counselor, the school nurse, or a school psychologist
well in advance of the test if this applies to you. They may be
able to give you some useful strategies that will help you feel
more relaxed and then be able to do your best on the test.
What to Do During the Test
• Read all of the possible answers. Even if you think you have
found the correct response, do not automatically assume that it
is the best answer. Read through each answer choice to be sure
that you are not making a mistake by jumping to conclusions.
 • Use the process of elimination. Go through each answer to a
question and eliminate as many of the answer choices as possible.
By eliminating two answer choices, you have given yourself
a better chance of getting the item correct, because there will
only be two choices left from which to make your selection.
Sometimes a question will have one or two answer choices that
are a little odd. These answers will be obviously wrong for one
of several reasons: they may be impossible given the conditions
of the problem, they may violate mathematical rules or principles,
or they may be illogical.
• Work on the easier questions first. If you find yourself working
too long on one question, make a mark next to it in your test
booklet and continue. After you have answered all of the questions
that you know, go back to the ones you have skipped.
• Be sure that the answer oval you are marking corresponds
to the number of the question in the test booklet. The multiple-
choice sections are graded by machine, so marking one
wrong answer can throw off your answer key and your score. Be
extremely careful.
• Work from answer choices. You can use a multiple-choice format
to your advantage by working backward from the answer
choices to solve a problem. This strategy can be helpful if you
can just plug the answers into a given formula or equation. You
may be able to make a better choice on a difficult problem if
you eliminate choices that you know do not fit into the problem.
• If you cannot determine what the correct answer is, answer
the question anyway. The OGT does not subtract points for
wrong answers, so be sure to fill in an answer for every question.
It works to your advantage because you could guess correctly
and increase your score.

Christmas 1945: The Story of the Greatest Celebration in American History, by Matthew Litt

The American spirit and the role of Christmas is examined when President Truman delcares a four day Christmas weekend for federal employees, a hiatus unique to American culture. The U.S. Military launches "Operation Magic Carpet" to get tens of thousands of GI's in Europe and Asia home for Christmas, and at home, the U.S. Army and Navy launches "Operation Santa Claus" to process those thousands of GI's for discharge in time for Christmas. With happy spirits, the veterans set out for home, clogging rail depots, bus stations and airports creating, at that time, the greatest traffic jam in the nation's history. Some of the more fortunate are driven thousands of miles home by grateful citizens demonstrating the Christmas spirit in their own unique way.Across the nation, people crowd churches praying with gratitude for the peace in place, and reach out to wounded veterans, children who lost fathers, and neighbors who lost sons. Americans in big cities and small, participate in displays of the intrinsic love so indicative of the American spirit.

Review
Some of the most memorable Christmas presents come in small, unadorned packages. They grow in meaning as you look more deeply into them, and draw the mind into unanticipated offshoots and byways.

This is certainly the case with Christmas 1945, a deceptively thin but meaty volume by Matthew Litt (History Publishing Company)

It is as the subtitle says, "The story of the greatest celebration in American history." Its focus on the surface is the first Christmas after the end of World War II when nylon stockings were still scarce but the spirit of the holidays was not. Lights were on in the nation's largest cities for the first time--in many ways: lights of hope, with the realization that troops were finally coming home from Europe and Asia, and that war plants would soon be making tin toys for Santa's stockings again.

So why should anyone today want to read Christmas 1945, unless they have a nostalgic feeling for the time or love wars and their histories? The book offers much more than that, and focusing on one series of events rather than attempting to do another comprehensive overall view of a decade is an excellent idea.

The book is a launching point for contrasts, then and now, big city and small town. One remembers the lack of a reception the small-town boy received when he sat alone in a little cafe in southeast Kansas after returning from service in Vietnam in the 1960s without the honor of a parade. What a difference compared to the reception given in small towns and large when troops returned from World War II to a grateful nation, as told by Litt's simple eloquence.

What a contrast also with the previous Christmas. In 1944, the Allies thought they had the war nearly won when the last days of turmoil broke out in a wooded, mountainous region of Germany. The Battle of the Bulge was to be the last major conflict of a war winding down, a Christmas conflict which would lead in a few months to the surrender of the Nazis and the Japanese. If Christmas 1944 was a frightening reminder that the war was not really over yet, Christmas 1945 was a collective prayer, a nationwide sigh of relief.

Litt, 32, the talented but unassuming author, is a New Jersey lawyer with a degree in politics. His book, purposely, is not a ponderous pretender, claiming to look into all events surrounding the war. But his finely-honed and trimmed approach is a way through the use of footnotes and documentation to find more if you wish. Read the book as a snapshot of hope in a time gone by, or as a view of how people today might learn from the past as they measure their response to returning servicemen and women...with policy questions, perhaps, but gratitude for service.

Part of the book's charm and impact is in its human interest approach--employing every-day people in service or out, while keeping the use of military or historical documents or tales of strategy to a minimum. Another plus is in the use of newspapers of the time, small and large, to tell the tale of the returning combatants or to editorialize about the spirit of Christmas in 1945. Sources include the Lincoln Journal (NE), the Oakland Tribune (CA), the Athens Messenger (OH) and the Big Spring Herald (TX).

A big and busy Camp Crowder in Neosho, MO is mentioned, as is Independence, MO, the home of Harry Truman, who succeeded the embattled wartime president and commander-in-chief Franklin Delano Roosevelt. President Truman, Litt writes, insisted upon braving a storm to fly home to Missouri from the White House for his first postwar Christmas dinner.

The fact that Litt found digging through old newspaper clippings about Christmas 1945 more interesting than his dealing as an attorney with white-collar insurance fraud has given us a highly readable, unpretentious, often personal, local and touching story that is a --Bookvues.com, Alan Caruba, Nov. 29,2010

I am so glad that I bought this book!
By Patricia A. Sullivan
There are very few pictures in this book. I was dismayed when I first got it but I gamely started reading and discovered that the author created pictures with his words. I felt transported back in time to my folks' ages and that Christmas long ago. What a cohesive society we became! It seemed as if everyone had a kindness to share or verbalize. I loved one story that took place in Colorado at a train station involving a town and a train load of sailors heading to their destinations. I won't spoil the story because it is mighty fun to read. We also stop in and visit Harry Truman in Missouri and cover the west coast pretty comprehensively. I would buy this book again and give it to someone to read to just feel good. I felt optimistic about life after this book. Enjoy! Makes a good weekend of reading. I gave it four stars due to the lack of pictures but I feel guilty doing so.

Custer Survivor: The End of the Myth, the Beginning of the Legend, by John Koster

Custer Survivor was the basis for History Channel's  television  documentary Custer’s Last Stand about  the one man in the Seventh Cavalry who escaped the annihilation at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. It is the story of Sgt. Frank Finkel of "C" Company, who, stunned by the impact of a rifle barrel smashing his forehead, was carried off by his panic stricken horse. Drawn from Sioux observations, Dept. of Army documents and forensic evidence, this is the story of the one soldier who escaped death at Little Big Horn and the fascinating life story of the man who  turned myth into  legend.

From Publishers Weekly
For decades, Custer's "Last Stand" at Little Big Horn has captured the American imagination. Remembered by some as the tragic result of imperialist policies and by others as a noble sacrifice for American expansion, the one thing everyone learns in school is that Custer's battle against Lakota and Cheyenne forces left no Americans alive. In this chronicle of meticulous research, handwriting analysis and document investigation, journalist Koster turns that myth on its ear: though a number of people claim to have fought at (and survived) Little Big Horn, Koster identifies the one reluctant claimant who actually did-Sergeant Frank Finkel of Company C. A carefully deconstructed historical mystery sure to thrill American history enthusiasts, Koster's narrative and methods are entirely transparent, presenting all the information and leaving readers to draw their own conclusions. Though Finkel's story isn't particularly dramatic, Koster's pursuit of the truth behind a great American myth makes for a compelling tale in itself.

Review
Library Journal Nov.1, 2009

Over the years there have been a number of claims of survivors of Custer's battalion at the Little Bighorn in 1876, but none has held up under close scrutiny--until now. Journalist Koster (The Road to Wounded Knee) carefully reconstructs the life of Frank Finkel, second sergeant of C Company. He marshals all of the available documentary, historical, archaeological, and forensic evidence, to show that the Frank Finckel born in Ohio in 1854 was the George August Finckle who enlisted in the Seventh Cavalry in 1872, the Frank Finkel who died in Dayton, WA, in 1930, and the "long sword" whom Rain-in-the-Face reported being told escaped the battle on a runaway horse and whom he saw in Chicago in 1893. Koster also tells how Finkel's desire to enhance his status and his second wife's efforts to erase all traces of his first wife, supposedly part Cherokee, misled researchers for decades but also kept Finkel's story alive. VERDICT This well-written and carefully reasoned argument is essential reading for scholars and students of the West and will be of great interest to anyone with even a passing interest in Custer and the Little Bighorn. Highly recommended.--Stephen H. Peters, Northern Michigan Univ. Lib., Marquette

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking addition to American history shelves,

Custer Survivor: The End of a Myth, the Beginning of a Legend dares to challenge the long-standing historical assumption that the 210 troopers under Custer's command were exterminated to the last man. Drawing up extensive research and forensic evidence, Custer Survivor reveals the untold tale of one trooper who escaped, the Second Sergeant of C Company. Following his ordeal after his escape and the successful life he pursued thereafter, Custer Survivor is a thought-provoking addition to American history shelves with a focus on intense historical scrutiny and re-examination.

Frank Finkel was a fraud
By Michael L. Nunnally
The whole contention of this book is that Frank Finkel was really Sgt. August Finckle of Company C, reportedly killed in the Custer fight on the Little Big Horn. But the problem is that Finkel only claimed to be Sgt. Finckle when the original name he gave, Frank Hall, could be found on no known rosters. But author Koster claims Finkel never used the name Frank Hall. He claims it was a lie made up by Finkel's second wife Hermie Billmeyer and offers up a plethora of bizarre reasoning to prove it. CUSTER SURVIVOR drags us through a painful array of genealogist and so called handwriting experts who verify the author's claims. But not so fast. In a 1921 interview with Finkel in the Walla Walla Bulletin, written by W.H Banfill, himself a student of the battle, Finkel said he enlisted under the name "Frank Hall" so that his parents wouldn't find out. In another version Finkel said he "rode back to Ft. Benton and was discharged." He even says so in CUSTER SURVIVOR (pg.109). The 1921 article/interview was given four years before he even met Hermie Billmeyer. So much for research. When no military papers could be found on Finkel he simply changed his story and stated, "I never had any discharge papers from the army for I was never discharged. There was none of my command left to apply to (some 24 soldiers of C Company survived the battle) and I wasn't going to chase all over the country to find some one to discharge me. As far as the army was concerned, Frank Hall was reported dead along with the rest of Custer's men and I let it go at that." That quote comes straight from Finkel himself in 1921. In another version Finkel said his discharge papers, which he said he never had, were "burned in a house fire;" He said he enlisted in Omaha and fought Arapahos "on the Mexican border;" He was transferred to the Seventh Cavalry in 1876; There are no military records anywhere which prove any of Frank Finkel's far-fetched tale. But the author has fallen under the Finkel spell and facts be damned.

Ft. Benton had been closed for over one year at the time of the 1876 battle but Finkel, like any good prize fighter, ducked and dodged any serious questions thrown at him. He made one story up to cover another. Finkel was invited by the city of Hardin, Montana, to be the honored guest at the 1921 Custer Battle Anniversary but was a no-show. His 1921 revelation was run in newspapers from Seattle to Anniston, Alabama. He successfully hoodwinked his wives, children, relatives and friends alike with the tale. According to Koster Mrs. Billmeyer spent years trying to obtain a military pension for a name she invented. This makes absolutely no sense. Finkel had the "facts" surrounding his "sole survivor" story up and running long before Mrs. Billmeyer came on the scene. Over 50 men made the same claim that Frank Finkel made. In the end Frank Finkel was just a better liar and story teller. CUSTER SURVIVOR, like the Billy Heath book and Nathan Short story, is nothing more than fiction presented as history. Save your money on this silliness and buy Roger Williams' 2009 "Military Register of Custer's Last Command" which lists every soldier connected with the 1876 Sioux Expedition. Or James Donovan's "A Terrible Glory." Both great books by serious Little Big Horn researchers.

Interesting but Fanciful
By Al
This book is the record of a couple of frauds; Finkel himself, who, even if his story was true, was a deserter, who lied when convenient, starting when he enlisted. And his widow, who after manipulating the aging Finkel into giving her the majority of his holdings and cheating his children out of the rest, went on to try to cheat the government, attempting to get a widow's pension. Thank goodness she was unsuccessful in her endeavors.

I saw many other inaccurate and implausible examples. One of the most glaring was that Lakota Rain in the Face, supposedly identified, or an unamed "Indian Women" identified Finkel and told Rain in the Face that she recognized Finkel in Chicago forty years after the Custer battle, when in 1876 Finkel got no closer than rifle range of the village and on a moving horse? How could either of them recognize a random elderly white man who at best they had got a fleeting glimpse of or seen slumping down wounded on a speeding horse forty years earlier?

Other little mistakes are some of the Native Americans in the photographs are mislabeled, Crawler is one, labeled as "Ice-Cheyenne". Crawler was one of the first Lakota to see the 7th Cav approaching and extensively photographed and interviewed concerning what he had seen. Tom Custer, may have been on paper a Troop Commander, but served as his brothers 'aide de camp". Captain Myles Keogh, commanded Custer's right wing and Second Lieutenant Henry Harrington Commanded C Troop, the Troop that the real Finkel was a sergeant in.

If Finkel survived the battle, assuming that you believe his story, could have faced punishment, but getting to civilization or one of the other columns for medical treatment would have been paramont to his survival. If his will to live were as great as he makes it sound like, I think that Finkel would have sought proper attention as soon as he could. Like another reviewer that has looked at this case, I found it highly unlikely that he could have pulled himself back onto a horse with the wounds, blood loss and fatigue described, on both his and the horses parts, if he had dismounted. His story concerning the rifle shot and horse bolting was believable and does not justify desertion for fear of punishment, IF he was telling the truth to start with.

Evidence?
By Grundy
Let's keep this short...
The "survivor" had a different name, a different place of birth, and an eleven (eleven!!) year age difference than the guy who enlisted in 1872. But, the author tells us, he was about the right height and made his F's (in the "studied" signatures) in an old German style.
Thats the author's premise...now the rest of the book is about the battle and geneological research of the family of the guy who the author believes is the survivor.
Forget the fact the government soundly and repeatedly denies they ever heard of this "survivor" not to mention the fact the imposter himself and his zany, money-grubbing, glory-seeking second wife muddied the waters so bad with their countless lies and cover-ups that it made any chance of a serious investigation virtually impossible. According to the author, they did so because of a wave of anti-German sentiment (give me a break) and the fact that our poor "survivor" might have been deemed a deserter and Custer(Custer was already dead...or was he? Hmmmmmmmmmm)didn't treat deserters nicely.
I've got no problem with the book itself. I enjoyed reading it. Lots of fun.
My only issue is that it should be labeled fiction. PERIOD!

Each of the selections, introduced by the editor, presents enlightening thoughts on a different aspect of leadership. Writings by Plato, Aristotle, Lao-tzu and others demonstrate that the challenges of leadership are as old as civilization. Machiavelli, Tolstoy, Ghandi, and W.E.B. Du Bois provide a wide range of insights into the eternal practice and problems of leadership. Modern masters of leadership such as James MacGregor Burns, John Kotter, and Warren Bennis join such leading practitioners as Max De Pree and Roger B. Smith in discussing contemporary issues in leadership theory and practice.

From Booklist
Management theories come and go, but the traits and qualities that define good leadership are timeless. Books on leadership often look to the past for their models. Here Wren, a teacher at the University of Richmond Jepson School of Leadership Studies, has compiled a collection of 64 readings from over 2,000 years of writing on leaders and leadership. His "contributors" range from the classic (Plato, Aristotle, and Machiavelli) to the contemporary (John Kotter and Warren Bennis), from historical figures (Gandhi and W. E. B. DuBois) to observers of history (Thomas Carlyle and Leo Tolstoy), and from the academic to the practitioner and the popular. Wren's selections are grouped into 14 different categories (what defines leadership, historical views, modern views, the leadership environment, leading the individual, leading groups, etc.). Among the current spate of books on leadership, Wren's is a uniquely comprehensive yet browsably readable guide. David Rouse

Chapter 1

The Cry for Leadership

John W. Gardner

John Gardner has served six presidents of the United States in various leadership capacities. He was Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, founding chairman of Common Cause, co-founder of the Independent Sector, chairman of the National Coalition, and president of the Carnegie Corporation and Foundation. He is currently the Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor at Stanford Business School.

Why do we not have better leadership? The question is asked over and over. We complain, express our disappointment, often our outrage; but no answer emerges.

When we ask a question countless times and arrive at no answer, it is possible that we are asking the wrong question -- or that we have misconceived the terms of the query. Another possibility is that it is not a question at all but simply convenient shorthand to express deep and complex anxieties. It would strike most of our contemporaries as old-fashioned to cry out, "What shall we do to be saved?" And it would be time-consuming to express fully our concerns about the social disintegration, the moral disorientation, and the spinning compass needle of our time. So we cry out for leadership.

To some extent the conventional views of leadership are shallow, and set us up for endless disappointment. There is an element of wanting to be rescued, of wanting a parental figure who will set all things right. Such fantasies for grown-up children should not lead us to dismiss the need for leaders nor the insistent popular expression of that need. A great many people who are not given to juvenile fantasies want leaders -- leaders who are exemplary, who inspire, who stand for something, who help us set and achieve goals.

Unfortunately, in popular thinking on the subject, the mature need and the childlike fantasies interweave. One of [my] tasks...is to untangle them, and to sketch what is realistically possible.

Leadership is such a gripping subject that once it is given center stage it draws attention away from everything else. But attention to leadership alone is sterile -- and inappropriate. The larger topic of which leadership is a subtopic is the accomplishment of group purpose, which is furthered not only by effective leaders but also by innovators, entrepreneurs and thinkers; by the availability of resources; by questions of morale and social cohesion; and by much else that I discuss....It is not my purpose to deal with either leadership or its related subjects comprehensively. I hope to illuminate aspects of the subject that may be of use in facing our present dilemmas -- as a society and as a species.

The Issues Behind the Issues

We are faced with immensely threatening problems -- terrorism, AIDS, drugs, depletion of the ozone layer, the threat of nuclear conflict, toxic waste, the real possibility of economic disaster. Even moderately informed citizens could extend the list. Yet on none of the items listed does our response acknowledge the manifest urgency of the problem. We give every appearance of sleepwalking through a dangerous passage of history. We see the life-threatening problems, but we do not react. We are anxious but immobilized.

I do not find the problems themselves as frightening as the questions they raise concerning our capacity to gather our forces and act. No doubt many of the grave problems that beset us have discoverable, though difficult, solutions. But to mobilize the required resources and to bear what sacrifices are necessary calls for a capacity to focus our energies, a capacity for sustained commitment. Suppose that we can no longer summon our forces to such effort. Suppose that we have lost the capacity to motivate ourselves for arduous exertions in behalf of the group. A discussion of leadership cannot avoid such questions.

Could it be that we suppress our awareness of problems -- however ominous -- because we have lost all conviction that we can do anything about them? Effective leaders heighten both motivation and confidence, but when these qualities have been gravely diminished, leaders have a hard time leading.

Suppose that fragmentation and divisiveness have proceeded so far in American life that we can no longer lend ourselves to any worthy common purpose. Suppose that our shared values have disintegrated to the point that we believe in nothing strongly enough to work for it as a group. Shared values are the bedrock on which leaders build the edifice of group achievement. No examination of leadership would be complete without attention to the decay and possible regeneration of the value framework.

Suppose that our institutions have become so lacking in adaptiveness that they can no longer meet new challenges. All human institutions must renew themselves continuously; therefore, we must explore this process as it bears on leadership.

I think of such matters -- motivation, values, social cohesion, renewal -- as the "issues behind the issues," and I shall return to them often in the pages that follow.

Our Dispersed Leadership

In this society, leadership is dispersed throughout all segments of the society -- government, business, organized labor, the professions, the minority communities, the universities, social agencies, and so on. Leadership is also dispersed down through the many levels of social functioning, from the loftiest levels of our national life down to the school principal, the local union leader, the shop supervisor.

We have always associated both kinds of dispersion with our notions of democracy and pluralism. But as our understanding of the principles of organization has developed, we have come to see that there is really no alternative to such dispersal of leadership if large-scale systems are to retain their vitality. The point is relevant not only for our society as a whole but also for all the organized subsystems (corporations, unions, government agencies, and so forth) that compose it.

Most leadership today is an attempt to accomplish purposes through (or in spite of) large, intricately organized systems. There is no possibility that centralized authority can call all the shots in such systems, whether the system is a corporation or a nation. Individuals in all segments and at all levels must be prepared to exercise leaderlike initiative and responsibility, using their local knowledge to solve problems at their level. Vitality at middle and lower levels of leadership can produce greater vitality in the higher levels of leadership.

In addition to all people down the line who may properly be called leaders at their level, there are in any vital organization or society a great many individuals who share leadership tasks unofficially, by behaving responsibly with respect to the purposes of the group. Such individuals, who have been virtually ignored in the leadership literature, are immensely important to the leader and to the group. (And as I point out later, even the responsible dissenter may be sharing the leadership task.)

Understanding Leadership

I have seen a good many leaders in action. My first chore for a president was for Eisenhower, whom I had known earlier when he headed Columbia University. Of the seven presidents since then, I have worked with all but two. But I have learned powerful lessons from less lofty leaders -- from a top sergeant in the Marine Corps, from university presidents, corporate chief executive officers, community leaders, bankers, scientists, union leaders, school superintendents, and others. I have led, and have worked in harness with other leaders.

The development of more and better leaders is an important objective that receives a good deal of attention in these pages. But this is not a how-to-do-it manual. The first step is not action; the first step is understanding. The first question is how to think about leadership. I have in mind not just political buffs who want more and better leaders on the political scene, nor just CEOs who wonder why there are not more leaders scattered through their huge organizations. I have in mind citizens who do not want to be victimized by their leaders, neighborhood organizations that want to train their future leaders, the young people who dream of leadership, and all kinds of people who just want to comprehend the world around them.

Citizens must understand the possibilities and limitations of leadership. We must know how we can strengthen and support good leaders; and we must be able to see through the leaders who are exploiting us, playing on our hatred and prejudice, or taking us down dangerous paths.

Understanding these things, we come to see that much of the responsibility for leaders and how they perform is in our own hands. If we are lazy, self-in-dulgent, and wanting to be deceived; if we willingly follow corrupt leaders; if we allow our heritage of freedom to decay; if we fail to be faithful monitors of the public process -- then we shall get and deserve the worst....

Leadership Development

How many dispersed leaders do we need? When one considers all the towns and city councils, corporations, government agencies, unions, schools and colleges, churches, professions and so on, the number must be high. In order to have a target to think about, and setting precision aside, let us say that it is 1 percent of the population -- 2.4 million men and women who are prepared to take leaderlike action at their levels. How can we ever find that many leaders?

Fortunately, the development of leaders is possible on a scale far beyond anything we have ever attempted. As one surveys the subject of leadership, there are depressing aspects but leadership development is not one of them. Although our record to date is unimpressive, the prospects for improvement are excellent.

Many dismiss the subject with the confident assertion that "leaders are born not made." Nonsense! Most of what leaders have that enables them to lead is learned. Leadership is not a mysterious activity. It is possible to describe the tasks that leaders perform. And the capacity to perform those tasks is widely distributed in the population. Today, unfortunately, specialization and patterns of professional functioning draw most of our young potential leaders into prestigious and lucrative nonleadership roles.

We have barely scratched the surface in our efforts toward leadership development. In the mid-twenty-first century, people will look back on our present practices as primitive.

Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction -- usually a rather small fraction -- of the potentialities within them. The reservoir of unused human talent and energy is vast, and learning to tap that reservoir more effectively is one of the exciting tasks ahead for humankind.

Among the untapped capabilities are. leadership gifts. For every effectively functioning leader in our society, I would guess that there are five or ten others with the same potential for leadership who have never led or perhaps even considered leading. Why? Perhaps they were drawn off into the byways of specialization...or have never sensed the potentialities within them...or have never understood how much the society needs what they have to give.

We can do better. Much, much better.

Getting a grasp on the nature of leadership
By A Customer
I have used this book in an introductory class on Leadership. It provides an outstanding overview of key authors and their thoughts on leadership spanning centuries. Wren offers a readable review of a variety of methodological approaches to the study of leadership presented through the writings of a wide array of authors. Both historical views and modern views are covered in the work and this anthology opens the door for more extensive readings. As a discussion starter it is a goldmine. The arrangement of broad topic areas such as, Historical, Leaders and Followers, Environments, Skills, and most important, writings in Moral Leadership promotes the development of "jigsaw" discussion techniques. Wren presents an excellent introduction to a fascinating topic!

weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org
By Greg L. Thomas
Books on leadership now abound in bookstores and in our popular consciousness. Anyone who begins a serious study into this subject will soon come across familiar names such as John Gardner, James MacGregor Burns, Robert Greenleaf, Bernard Bass, Kenneth Blanchard, Terrence Deal, Warren Bennis, Max De Pree and others. Wouldn't it be wonderful if one book contained some of the most insightful writings and thoughts of these individuals? The Leaders Companion - Insights on Leadership Through the Ages is such a book and should be on every leader's bookshelf!

This massive work is edited by J. Thomas Wren and he undertakes a difficult task. Wren constructs the book with three basic premises. First, that leadership is not just a modern "fad", but is "central to the human condition". Leadership as a concept is both current and timeless. The second premise of the book is that leadership is not just the province of a select few, but is available to all. Thirdly, and perhaps the most important premise is that leadership is a valuable area of study, especially the process of leadership. Wren hopes the reader will appreciate the "real end of leadership: the achievement of mutual goals which are intended to enhance one's group, organization or society."

To initiate these premises the book approaches leadership from a broad perspective. Wren draws upon a broad range of classical writers, leadership scholars, and the wisdom of modern leaders. The book is divided into thirteen parts that guide the reader through the complex structure we commonly call leadership. Wren acknowledges that understanding this process lies at the heart of improving our lives, surroundings, and world.

This book is an outstanding collection of various leadership perspectives and models. He has opened up the study of leadership through the ages and from a worldview of different cultures. The Leaders Companion - Insights on Leadership Through the Ages is great reading and should be part of your own leadership library!
