Meh...

With Kingmaker, Christian Cantrell has crafted a tale that sees Alexei Drovosek, a former Russian assassin, recruit several young people to aid his quest to right many sociopolitical wrongs that plague the world in the not-too-distant future.
The story, itself, is fairly compelling as it portrays many aspects of the future that are entirely plausible given the current political climate, & the general direction we, as a society, seem to be heading.But, unfortunately for Kingmaker, the devil is in the details, &, for me, that is where the book kinda fell flat.
There are several instances that don't quite add up chronologically, & there seemed to be an overall lack of resolution.
All in all, this wasn't a bad read, as there are more than a few moments of enjoyment spattered throughout. However, the order with which certain aspects of the story are presented detracts from the overall quality of the book.

Intriguing concept!

Kingmaker by Christian Cantrell is a book that has a very intriguing concept and the blurb highlights it perfectly. The story starts of with Alexei Drovosek, who decides to plan for a better future and not worry about current geo-political concerns. He decides to use children as his opening move to stabilize the future. The story then details all of Alexei's tricks and turns to manipulate the future however the story execution is what makes the story falter.
I enjoyed the idea behind the story and would have liked the story if it have been smoothly aligned. The author's plot twists as well as the character turns really stretched my imagination and caused a lot of disbelief. Usually I'm a easygoing reader but sometimes it becomes difficult to enjoy the read wherein so many thing seem out of order. Overall this story needed a strong re-write and perhaps better re-organization and then this would have a debut whose execution matches the blurb's intrigue.

Jarring organization affects story

Russian born Alexei Drovosek decides the espionage game is lame, and embarks on a long-term project to make life better for the poor and oppressed people ruled by corporations. He does this by training children, who then go out to implement change, if they make that decision for themselves.
Drovosek is also some kind of mutant experiment, with a noiseless heart, so he can play dead. And he has unlimited money. And he seems to be familiar with all types of technology. And he is very smart, so he can remain off the grid in LA but still live in a mansion because he can hide or delete all his records.
The believability quotient was very low. And the integration of the children, trained for various purposes, into the story was awkward and affected the flow of the plot. I really felt there were some serious organizational issues in how the story was put together.
Distracting rather than enjoyable.
