About the Author

An absolutely indispensable guide to ripping down the veil that covers the process of creating a film

If you love reading, you should have a copy of DIRECTING sitting on your bookshelf. One might find it strange that I would recommend a book that covers film directing from A to Z and back again, to an audience of literature aficionados. Bear with me, though: if you have ever found yourself totally lost in a novel or film and asked yourself, "How did the author/director do that?!" DIRECTING will answer that question and much, much more.

I originally was attracted to this book as a tool for my younger daughter, a budding film producer. The subtitle --- "Film Techniques and Aesthetics" --- is a bit dry and, to be honest, doesn't quite include everything that this exhaustive, 500-page delight covers. The table of contents is 13 pages all by itself, starting with an overview of who a director is and what a director does, and moves on to scripting, pre-production, casting, dealing with actors, camera shots, the dreaded post-production, and everything else in between. DIRECTING is also paired up with a website (www.directingbook.com) that supplements and previews the book.

If you have a concept but don't know where to start, DIRECTING will lay down a breadcrumb on the first step and keep dropping them all the way through a very interesting and complex forest. While it does this, it presents examples of what is being discussed from any number of films, including many of which you may be totally unfamiliar. If you're in the mood to watch something different, open up the book at random and you'll find something. Have you ever heard of a movie called 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days? I hadn't until just now, when I found it mentioned in a section dealing with "Real Time and Expanded Time." You won't find such examples on every single page, but there are enough to keep you busy for the rest of your life, if you want to use it as a movie guide.

I would say, though, that if you'd like to do anything from filming a five-minute video that you're going to put on YouTube to a project that you want to submit to a film festival, DIRECTING will show you how the job gets done. And readers? You will gain a new appreciation for how your favorite authors do what they do, and why the film adaptation of your favorite book met your expectations. Or otherwise.

While this is not the type of book that one sits down and reads cover to cover, even the most casual browser will be intrigued by its subject matter and, at the very least, will come away from it with a new appreciation for what the director of a film does, from concept to realization. For those bitten by the directing or even acting bug, it is that mentor who will never lie to you, but will instead demonstrate how those 60 or 90 minutes on-screen are the product of hundreds of hours of work. DIRECTING is an absolutely indispensable guide to ripping down the veil that covers the process of creating a film. And it is so much more as well.

Great Resource for Filmmakers

As a screenwriter who wants to learn the entire process of filmmaking, I found the book Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics by Michael Rabiger & Mick Hurbis-Cherrier to be very informative. The contents page at the front of the book made it real easy for me to go back and refer to specific topics I needed more information on. As a screenwriter, Part 2: The Story and Its Development and Part 3: The Director and The Script, I found helpful. The book covers every thing from the pre-production phase to post production. Basically anything you want to know about any of the steps during these phases are included in the book.

I recommend this book for directors, producers and screenwriters. This is a great resource book for anyone who is interested or working in the filmmaking industry.

Must have if doing the DVD series

Many times the guides that go with a series or book aren't necessary or even very helpful. Not the case here. Although it repeats many of the verses and statements used in the DVD it does so in a way to build upon them for further study and discussion. Then it adds LOTS of great quotes and has some SUPER exercises that really help to add to the depth of this excellent 6 part DVD series. I have used it in a small group and in a Sunday morning youth meeting. Craig's lesson on money is eye opening and one of the best I have seen.

conservative appeal to become a "third line Christian"

The Christian Atheist is adequately summarized by its subtitle (Believing in God but Living as if He Doesn't Exist) and biblically supported by Titus 1:16 (They claim to know God, but by their actions deny him). Structurally the book includes twelve chapters all titled "When You Believe in God but . . ." sandwiched between an introduction and an afterword that are both pastoral and personal. The reader moves through twelve verses (ways to fall short of being a third line Christian) of the same song: real Christians believe this but Christian atheists act in a way that seemingly denies such a belief.

Study Guide great Biblical base to build on video

I lead a weekly adult small group study at our church. The materials in the video were good but the study guide was excellent. I found combining some of the weekly questions for personal study with the study questions themselves made for the best study. Questions were biblically based not just video based which is what I am looking for as a study leader .... point people to God's word.

Handy Resource

I gave the book 4 stars, but it's more like 3.5.

The authors follow a new principal starting in an elementary school, and explain, in detail, the leadership steps he takes and the process he uses throughout the year to enable his PLCs to focus on improving instructional practice. Throughout the book, there are sets of, what the authors refer to as, quality assurance questions. These questions serve as a means of reflection for PLCs engaged in a school improvement process, thus making this a handy book to use.

The authors contend that the principles behind their Gradual Release of Responsibility Instructional Framework that teachers apply to their instruction with students can be applied to adults. The parts of this framework are the focus lesson, guided instruction, collaborative, and independent (I do it. We do it. You do it together. You do it alone.). They recognize that teachers, like students, need scaffolds and supports, but unlike in the classroom, the role of teacher and student in a faculty team can constantly shift.

The authors devote two chapters to the types of hard and soft data available to administrators. They point out that hard data are quantifiable and go beyond last year's assessment data. Nonacademic data like demographics should not be overlooked. Soft data are qualitative and are ubiquitous in a school: observations, practices for placement and retention, surveys, polls. This section on data, I found very helpful. It helps the reader to think creatively about the data points in their own school that might be overlooked.

The text is an excellent, easy-to-use guide for a principal and school leadership team to make PLCs more responsive to instructional improvement. The steps in the process make sense through the simplicity of the Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework. I didn't find any secrets to success in this book, but I did find a common sense, fair approach that any school with the will can make happen, and it's not a punitive process that uses student achievement to evaluate a teacher.

I recommend this book for a school with limited resources for training in developing instructional improvement plans. Between the quality assurance questions at the end of each chapter, or step in the process, and the many references listed, that offer further support and guidance, this book is a valuable tool.

About the Author
Jane Haddam (b. 1951) is an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988). Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s most recent novels are Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

Romance vs Suspense

This is the third of Papazoglou's "Pay McKenna" mysteries. The others are, in order, WICKED, LOVING MURDER, WICKED, LOVING MURDER, RICH, RADIANT SLAUGHTER and ONCE AND ALWAYS MURDER. They can be read in any order, but there's a slight edge to reading them in order if you can.

The central character is a Manhattan-based writer from Old Money New England, so the story takes place largely in Manhattan, and most of the characters are freelance writers or allied trades--editors, publicity--with tension (apart from mere murder) provided by the conflicting interests of romance, mystery and romantic suspense. It's a standard mystery, with the usual run of trappings--poison, a missing body and an impossible crime. All the McKennas are amusing, and this one exceeds itself with the creation of Max Brady, a bad imitator of Mickey Spillane, and author of MY ROD IS HOT. I first read this one about 20 years ago, and still think of Max whenever I run into bad hard-boiled. Definitely worth buying.

Where to go from here: There are two other non-series Papazoglou titles, CHARISMA and SANCTITY, which I would rate a nearer suspense than mystery. More recently, under the pen name "Jane Haddam" the same author has done the "Gregor Demarkian" mysteries.

Hilarious

I checked the books in this mystery series out one by one from the city library when I was in college about 20 years ago. A few weeks ago I decided to track them down one by one from used book sellers. This, the middle of a six book series, is one of the funniest, a mercilessly accurate look at a certain era in the romance and mystery industries and the various characters who wrote them. I recognized a certain well-known romance writer in the character Amelia, the chainsmoking septegenarian with a mind like a steel trap and a stable of secretaries who use her outlines to ghostwrite Jane Eyre rip-offs that vary from the formula not at all, despite being set in 1980s Britain or America. There's a running gag about how every romantic suspense novel cover features a heroine running from danger in an off the shoulder peasant blouse and four-inch heels. Then there's short, wimpy Max, author of the hard-boiled "My Rod is Hot" and secret romance novel writer. Priceless.

Pay McKenna, the heroine of the piece, is a 30-something romance novelist turned true crime author and amateur detective. She's a New England blue blood whose old boarding school friends think she's a touch odd for not settling down with a nice stockbroker and raising money for the American Cancer Society. Unconsciously wanting someone to admire her, she decides to help out struggling first-time romantic suspense novelist Sarah and ends up stumbling into another murder and getting a whole lot else more than she had bargained for. The mystery itself moves along snappily, with plenty of laughs, most from Pay's acid wit.

The book holds up well after 26 years, though the references to typewriters, word processors, VCRs, the Cold War, and millennium are a bit jarring in this age of Nooks and Kindles and laptops and cell phones, etc. My, how the publishing industry has changed and my, how it hasn't.

I have read everything the author wrote as Jane Haddam, and loved it all. The plots and characters of her early works, including the Patience McKenna mysteries, are not as well-done as those of her later works, but the books are still a cut above run-of-the-mill mysteries and well worth reading.

A feel-good story

What it's about: Sienna is off to Cambodia to find her brother Eddie - but not by her choice. Her mum believes something is happening with Eddie and so on her way to Singapore with her boyfriend Daniel, she stops off, determined to find her brother and be on her way. Instead she meets Guillaume, a hot seductive French friend of Eddie's, who knows more than he's letting on.

What I thought: This book was started off slowly for me. It took me a long time to get past the fact that Sienna is such a "princess" and can't do anything for herself. Anything. While it turns out that this was deliberately part of the plot so this can change through-out the story, it really just bugged me for the first half of the book. Plus she is a gold-digger. Seriously, who dates a someone ten years older than you just for his car and his apartment views? Sienna does. Also, that someone (Daniel, her boyfriend) turns out to be a professional poker player? HRMM. But despite those facts that made me sigh (with a bit lot of eye-rolling) I ended up loving this book. Even though it really does take Sienna a while, she really does learn how to be a better person. Now Guillaume was not the most swoony guy, but he did have his moments. (I mean, magic mushrooms?!)
Together, they search Cambodia for Eddie, and learn about each other and themselves along the way. Such a feel-good novel.
This book was a well-paced novel and I recommend it for teens on the more mature end of the scale.

The Good: To be honest, I thought the end was wonderful - when they found Eddie. So simple, yet so effective!

The Bad: Well, everything I complained about above!
