This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the role of transnational financial associations (TFAs) in the organization of global finance.

This book develops three theoretical themes of assemblage, functionality, and power as enrolment. These themes challenge approaches that treat financial power as emanating from a single location or force. Whilst existing approaches tend to treat TFAs as irrelevant or as merely transmitting power originating elsewhere, this book argues that power must be created by painstakingly assembling actors, networks, and objects that are often quite autonomous and working at cross purposes to one another—a process in which TFAs play a central role. The book explores these themes in chapters examining the roles of TFAs in interacting with public authorities, constructing global financial markets, and creating financial communities. The authors additionally analyse the roles of TFAs in the European Union, in the Global South, and in promoting goals other than profitability, including Islamic finance, microfinancing, savings banks and cooperatives.

...Soltó el crucifijo, y este quedó adherido a su piel, pero con la presión que le había impuesto se abrió de la cadenita, un eslabón.
...Con la misma ceremonia hecha costumbre, se despojó de su ropa, y abordó el bote con los cisnes en pareja, a su lado, se internó en el lago, hasta llegar al centro, donde se quedó inmóvil, y al inclinarse acariciar un cisne negro, el crucifijo se liberó, y la cadenita cayó al agua. Al ver que, esta se hundía, sin pensarlo, instintivamente, se lanzó al agua a recuperarla, pero la cadenita continuaba hacia el fondo hasta llegar a éste, divisándola ésta, por su brillo de, parpadeante pececito. Luchó haciendo un gran esfuerzo por zafarse, esfuerzo que casi agotó el aire en sus pulmones; intentó e intentó de nuevo, pero continuaba atrapada.

Great Overview, Esp. of Homefront...Superb Supplementary Material

[Disclaimer: I had the great privilge of being invited to contribute a chapter to this book (#14, "Civilian Healthcare"). I received a nominal honorarium and 2 copies of the book as compensation. I have no other financial interest in sales of the book].

This book is divided into 8 parts, each part having 3-4 chapters of various length, but at ~5K words. While the battlefield is not ignored, the subject matter of this edited collection of invited essays concentrates more on the homefront and on social/cultural aspects of the Civil War.

Sections include

Dissent and Disobedience, Labor and Land, Religion and Reform, Health and Education, Ethnic American Lives, Literature and Visual Culture, Leisure and Performance, and Death and Aftermath.

The subject matter is boad enough that everyone will find something to their liking in this book and learn something new. It need not be read from beginning to end.

Another benefit is that the hardcover was published in parallel with a very affordable paperback for classroom use (suitable for honors high school or college).

It's hard to publish a book with contributions from 29 authors without their being some un-evenness in the quality. Each section includes at least one outstanding essay, one really good essay, and one mediocre essay in terms of scholarship, resources used, theme, etc., and in editing.

About the Author
Debbie Zacarian is known for her work in advancing student engagement and achievement. Her explanations of current research into practical instructional, leadership, family-school engagement, and strength-based teacher evaluation systems are widely practiced.  

An expert in policies and practices, Dr. Zacarian provides professional development, strategic planning and policy work with school districts and state agencies. She served as a consultant for the Massachusetts Parent Information Resource Center and Federation for Children with Special Needs.

For over a decade, Dr. Zacarian served on the faculty of University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She was also the founding director of the Center for English Language Education and Academic Achievement at the Collaborative for Educational Services where she led and provided professional development for thousands of educators and wrote policies for many urban, suburban and rural districts.  She was also the founding director of the Amherst Public Schools bilingual and English learner programming where she and the district received many local, state and national honors.

Great insights for teachers and administrators!

I believe that a deeper understanding of language development can improve teaching practices for all educators. This book provides a wonderful foundation of knowledge in this field along with a wealth of practical examples. The discussion and reflection features make this a great personal resource, course textbook, or professional learning community tool. I recommend this book for general education, special education, ESL and bilingual education teachers and for administrators.

Human trafficking constitutes one of the most serious human rights violations of our time. However, many social work practitioners still have a poor and incomplete understanding of the experiences of children and young people who have been trafficked. In Trafficked Young People, the authors call for a more sophisticated, informed and better developed understanding of the range of issues facing trafficked young people.

The book looks at how practitioners interpret and use definitions of trafficking in their day to day work; at their experiences of exposing the needs of trafficked children and young people and at their efforts to find appropriate resources to meet these needs.

About the Author

Jenny J. Pearce is the Director of the Institute of Applied Social Research, and the International Centre for the Study of Sexually Exploited and Trafficked Young People, both at the University of Bedforshire, UK. Her research interests focus particularly on young people, sexual exploitation, child protection and domestic violence, and on accessing young people’s accounts of their experiences of child sexual exploitation.

Patricia Hynes is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Applied Social Studies at the University of Bedfordshire, UK. Her research interests include the sociology of human rights and forced migration in all its forms, including trafficking, refugees and issues around asylum. She has conducted research internationally on internally displaced persons, refugees, trafficking and asylum policy.

Silvie Bovarnick is a freelance researcher. She has previously worked for the NSPCC and the Department of Health on research programmes addressing different areas of violence and abuse. Her academic interests include the discursive construction of human rights and violence, specifically covering children's rights and women's rights. She has recently conducted research on child trafficking and child neglect.

The establishment that turns a blind eye to the tidal wave of illegal immigration all over the world is the same establishment that sets up feel-good and do-gooder organizations that produce this sort of ultimately meaningless academic chitchat. Pearce has recently been appointed to a commission of enquiry concerning sex abuse that happened 65 years ago at the hands of priests at a school, and of course all the priests are dead, and no one is left to be punished, but the tax payer will still foot the bill.
