About the Author
Margaret Nutting Ralph is the director of the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies degree program for Catholics at Lexington Theological Seminary and teaches in the Permanent Deacon Program for St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. She has given numerous presentations on biblical topics to parish, diocesan, state and national groups throughout the United States, in Nassau and in Canada, including the East Coast Conference; Anaheim Conference; National Conference of Catechetical Leaders; Chief Administrators of Catholic Education; National Catholic Education Association; Gather Me a People Conference. She has published many books and articles on religion and the church, including A Walk Through the New Testament: An Introduction for Catholics (2009) and bestseller And God Said What? An Introduction to Biblical Literary Forms (2003).

Wonderful book!

I loved the way the author provides scriptural and church law backup for the reasons why the Catholic Church must change some of its most controversial teachings. This was a well thought out process and I would recommend the book to all Catholics, especially those who just take the current teachings of the Church at its word without any knowledge of how it arrives at its conclusions. Also, it should be required reading for priests and other church leaders. The book is good for all Christians to read to gain a better knowledge of scripture, and for all of us who want an informed conscience.

Excellent coverage of important issues

The book addresses a number of issues where the Vatican and the laity are often at odds. What I liked about the book, was that while it argued for change, it gave the history and basis for the current Catholic teaching without distortion. The one section that I would have left out was the one dealing with Catholic workers' treatment. It read as a response to a personal situation, and could have been presented in more general terms. Ms. Ralph's coverage of the issues expressed the view of many faithful Catholics that love their faith, but see the need for the 'pilgrim church' to continue traveling toward perfection.

The current price $18+ for the ebook version discourages a lot of readers. Better pricing would get the message out to a wider audience. I was able to find it in my library's ebook list.

An excellent and well written essay.

Dr. Ralph asks important questions that need to be raised. She writes clearly and well. Her book is not an attack on the Catholic Church but lovingly brings to light the questions that many Roman Catholics would like to consider.

OSCAR works better than GROW for Managers

The key principles of the coaching approach presented by Jenny Rogers and her co-authors resonate with me. Especially the three following ideas:

1) Year-end judgement on performance of the direct reports does not ensure that results expected from a team are delivered.
2) Giving advise is contra productive - leveraging the resources of the direct reports within a well defined process delivers better business results and improves employee engagement at the same time and
2) GROW model for managerial coaching is not effective enough; coaching using OSCAR model ensures that direct reports deliver the results expected from the team and its leader.

Fantastic!

If there is one book that all business executives--managers, department heads, VPs, and executives--need to have, it is this one. I have worked as a coach for many years and I know the value of a "coach approach" to getting results, changing attitudes, and creating employee engagement. In clear, simple language, this author describes how management level personnel can understand, integrate, and execute a coach approach to management and leadership. People in business often talk about the value of coaching. But managers and executives rarely know what this actually means. This is the first book that gives business executives a pragmatic and easy to understand approach to using coaching in their daily business interactions. A brilliant book!

Be a more effective manager with this book

Another useful and practical book on coaching to have. The book has very practical chapters which I like such as:
- The coaching mindset
- Being a brilliant listener
- Creating fresh thinking: questioning and feedback
- Managing the coaching conversation
and others.
The OSCAR (Outcome, Situation, Choices and Consequences, Action, and Review) model is discussed in detail in different contexts with its applications. What makes this book readable and practical are the many examples of coaching situations and the coaching conversations provided. Overall, a good book for any manager or anyone who wants to become more effective in getting results.

She is a member of the American Rottweiler Club, founded the Houston Area Rottweiler Fanciers, and was a former officer of each affiliation. Not only is she experienced with upbringing man's best friend--she also raises two breeds of AKC dogs--but Pat has owned an exotic animal ranch for over 25 years. Using this experience, she has been writing freelance articles and handbooks on various exotic animals for over 15 years. Pat has lectured on exotic animals and birds, and dog training and temperament at numerous expositions, sales club meetings and Purdue University. She currently lives in Columbus, Texas.

Along the way they defended their methods and findings against competitors in the fields of public history and civic commemoration, and rescued some of Indiana’s own history by correcting a forgotten chapter of Lincoln’s.

Everybody’s History traces the development of popular interest in Lincoln to uncover the story of an extensive network of nonprofessional historians who contested old authorities and advanced new interpretations. In so doing, the book invites all who are interested in the past to see history as both vital to public life and meaningful to everybody.

Reading, researching, and preserving history might be a dry subject for many; southwestern Indiana might raise the question, "where?" But Abraham Lincoln is a topic that does resonate among many and with the amount of literature sitting on shelves today, another Lincoln work ?
Erekson' book, however, is a study of studies...the l920's project that brought a host of amateurs and professionals into the field of interviewing the surviving neighbors, relatives, and acquaintances of Abraham Lincoln while these primary sources were available and accessible; people who were pioneers in that part of Indiana where Lincoln said, "There I grew up." Controversies, egoes, competition all roiled in this interesting story of the evolution and progress of a particular endeavor to determine and preserve truth. Lincoln lovers will enjoy it; historians may chuckle and cringe, researchers will learn,and Erekson does make the point that history belongs to all of us.

Good! Gracious! It's good. . .

Over the years, I have read many of Alexandra Stoddard's books, but to my way of thinking, she has really outdone herself in this one. I found Gracious Living very inspirational and do-able because she really advocates simplicity and living in the moment. To her, life is not a problem to be solved, it is a sensual experience to be savoured. All of it--even what you might have previously thought of as a chore. Her descriptions--verbal snapshots really--of some her lifetime experiences are so well-written you can live them with her and, of course, recall your own. I read one section each morning as a 'wake-up call' and really found this got me out of bed 'on the right side.' This book is especially useful if you (or your friend) suffer from perfectionism and feel your life looks better on paper than in your heart.

Authenticity in and through Teaching introduces three distinct perspectives on authenticity, the existential, the critical and the communitarian, and shows what moving towards greater authenticity involves for teachers and students when viewed from each of these angles.

In developing the notion of ‘the scholarship of teaching as an authentic practice', this book draws on several complementary ideas from social philosophy to explore the nature of this practice and the conditions under which it might qualify as 'authentic'. Other concepts guiding the analysis include ‘virtue’, 'being', ‘communicative action’, 'power', ‘critical reflection’ and ‘transformation’.

Authenticity in and through Teaching also introduces a vision of the scholarship of teaching whose ultimate aim it is to serve the important interests of students. These important interests, it is argued, are the students’ own striving and development towards greater authenticity. Both teachers and students are thus implicated in a process of transformative learning, including objective and subjective reframing, redefinition and reconstruction, through critical reflection and critical self-reflection on assumptions. It is argued that, in important ways, this transformative process is intimately bound up with becoming more authentic.

Rather than being concerned principally with rendering research evidence of ‘what works’, the scholarship of teaching emerges as a social practice that is equally concerned with the questions surrounding the value, desirability and emancipatory potential of what we do in teaching. The scholarship of teaching, therefore, also engages with the bigger questions of social justice and equality in and through higher education.

The book combines Carolin Kreber's previous research on authenticity with earlier work on the scholarship of teaching, offering a provocative, fresh and timely perspective on the scholarship of university teaching and professional learning.

About the Author

Stephen M. Stahl, MD, is the author of over 450 articles and chapters and more than 1,300 scientific presentations and abstracts. He is an internationally recognized clinician, researcher, and teacher in psychiatry with subspecialty expertise in psychopharmacology. He has edited eight books and written more than 30 others, including the best-selling and award-winning textbook Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology, the clinical manual The Prescriber’s Guide, now in its fourth edition, and the series of clinical cases Case Studies: Stahl’s Essential Psychopharmacology. Dr. Stahl is adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and honorary visiting senior fellow at the University of Cambridge.

Bret A. Moore, PsyD, is board-certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, and adjunct associate professor in psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
