Excellent and Practical Review of How to Improve Memory Function

I'm a neuroscience physician and scientist. I read this book to learn techniques to improve my learning and memory. Although I have a very academic background, I've actually always struggled on standardized tests and learning large quantities of information quickly in school. That is why I picked up this book.

This is a practical read. For someone like me who has knowledge of neuroscience it provides a concise and practical review of important memory concepts and this is adequately simplified for the reader with no neuroscience background. The neuroscience described in this text has immediate real-world application and is practical.

The memory techniques described have a range of applications from someone who is looking forward to taking their boards again (me) to younger students and the elderly who feel their memory is declining. The book dispels many common myths, which is helpful. There are outlines at the end of each chapter that make concepts easy to review.

For me, this book had more applications than I anticipated. I use it not only to study, but to remember things about patients, my family, and friends.

At young ages, this generation of middle class Blacks, whom Harris coins as the Cosby Cohort, was faced with racial displacement, frustration, and the ever-present pressure to emerge victorious against the pull of downward mobility. Even in adulthood, they continue to negotiate the tensions between upward mobility and maintaining ties to the larger Black community and culture. While these young Blacks may have grown up watching The Cosby Show, as the book reveals, their stories indicate a much more complex reality than portrayed by the show.

Harris offers an interesting insight into the life experiences of 'second generation middle class blacks.' Based on interviews with adult African American men and women who had grown up during the 1980s and 1990s with parents who were the first to achieve middle-class status, the book explores the ways in which this precarious status influenced child-rearing strategies and socialization. She dubbed her informants the 'Cosby Cohort' because of both the era in which they were raised and the fact that The Cosby Show represented the same group she was interested in interviewing. Many informants compared the lessons transmitted in The Cosby Show to their own experiences growing up, where educational achievement and speaking standard English, among other things, were highly emphasized. Harris poses the question of what was gained and what was lost. Though everyone she studied had achieved professional success, many had struggled against the claim that they were 'acting white' and thus felt isolated from both the black and white communities; they were culturally and socially adrift. Highly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It was eye-opening and great for those of us who teach undergraduate courses on race relations, racial identity, and issues surrounding social class. It's well-written and a smooth read and I couldn't put it down. Drawing on the image of the fictional Cosby family (which btw was a must watch in our house every week growing up!), Harris shows how the real experiences of those who grew up in the black middle class at this time were more complex and challenging than what was presented to Cosby audiences. Highly recommend!

In this book, she provides a systematic and detailed analysis of the policies of the British Government towards civil unrest in Rwanda throughout the 1990s that culminated in genocide. Utilising documentary evidence obtained as a result of Freedom of Information requests to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as well as material obtained through extensive interviews - with British government cabinet members, diplomats, Ambassadors to the United Nations Security Council, prisoners in Rwanda convicted of being leaders and organisers of genocide, and victims and survivors of genocide in Rwanda – the author finds that the actions of the British and French governments, both before and during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, were disassociated from human rights norms. It is suggested herein that the decision-making of the Major government during the period of 1990 – 1994 was for the advancement of the interrelated goals of maintaining power status and ensuring economic interests in key areas of Africa.

This account of the legal culpability of the powerful within the corridors of government, in both London and Paris, shows that these behaviours cannot be conceptualised under existing notions of state crime. This book serves to illuminate the inadequacies and limitations of a concept of state crime in international law as it currently stands, and will be of considerable interest to anyone concerned with the misuse of state power.

ANYONE who is interested in comedy MUST read this book. It's essential for learning where standup first stood up.

I've read The Last Laugh probably six or seven times, which oughtta tell you how good a review this will be...and I'm delighted to learn that I can now have the Kindle version with me at all times.
Phil Berger's book was the first to look at the origins and inside workings of standup comedy. It's written in a sort-of jazz hipster patois that may seem a little dated now, but which certainly rings true when you see it alongside the jazz-influenced routines of Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, and other influential fathers of modern comedy.
You'll get tastes of lots of comedians who were successful in the 50s and early 60s, but largely forgotten today. You'll learn about the part of Rodney Dangerfield's life you never heard before. You'll see who influenced Robert Klein and George Carlin—who would go on to influence virtually every comic of the past 40 years.
If you're building a library devoted to standup, this should be the first volume you buy. It is indispensable!

I loved this book

Waaaayyyy back in the 80's I did standup in Cambridge and Boston Massacusetts, usually Jimmy Tingle or Lenny Clark hosting at the Ding Ho. I loved this book. I staggered under the stories. Anyone interested in standup comedy --- fan or performer --- will be illuminated. Jeeezzz ... climbing the world of standup can be like climbing Everest. Hard Hard Hard. But fascinating. And lots here of interest too for comedy writers and joke writers I read the first hardcover edition in a History of American Comedy class and thirty-plus years later I still remember the stories. ie the funniest man in America in the 50's was the son of Holocaust survivors, awful on stage but brilliant over coffee in NYC delis.

Denise K. Cummings is Associate Professor of Critical Media and Cultural Studies at Rollins College, where she teaches film history, theory, and criticism, critical media and cultural studies, and American and Indigenous literature, culture, and film.
