Brian Doyle's ability to praise without fawning, his Irish ear for lyric and wit, and his nose for the mythic dimension of Everyman lend these portraits a collective power I associate with fine novels. Doyle is a master of what jazz players call polytonality. His portraits of Morrison and Desmond are worthy of Plutarch; his Plutarch is worthy of Stevenson; his Stevenson doubles interest in Haggard; his nobodies share traits of his Greats and his Greats delight us with their nobodiness. In an era of critical portraits bent on stripping men of genius down to their Homer Simpson idiocies and boxer shorts, these intricate celebrations of flawed but genuine heroes are a delight. Introduction

Where Holy Lives

This book is a collection of resurrections, restorations, reconsiderations, appreciations, enthusiasms, headlong solos, laughing prayers, imaginary meetings with most unusual and most interesting men.

I wanted to bring these men back to public life, in most cases, or closer to the public eye, in others--to draw them from the shadowy corners of the room and beam a grinning light on them, to sing their stories, to see them fresh and new; and to see them too as very often men of immense spiritual substance, prayerful fury, enormous grace, wonderful attentiveness to miracle: in other words, devout men, in the most real and serious and smiling sense. Men very often concerned in their work and lives with the moral grapple, with the sinuous crucial puzzle of love, with the wonderfully mysterious ways that song and story stoke and spark the heart; which is, as you know and I know, where holy lives.

Why men? Why not women? Or children? Or herons or sea otters or damselflies or holy oaks?

Because I am a man, and absorbed by the idea that somehow I might learn how to be a good man, maybe even a great man, before I shuffle off this mortal coil, and something about each of the men in these pages teaches me about being a man: William Blake’s relentless eye for the holy, Robert Louis Stevenson’s passion and mercy, Van Morrison’s endless journey toward wonder and rapture, Paul Kelly’s enduring empathy for the ragged brokenness of his fellow human beings, Rider Haggard’s idea of honor and friendship as forms of love, Plutarch’s insistence that each man has moral greatness within him like a divine seed.

Each of these troubled talented extraordinary artists fascinated me enough to commit an essay about their lives and works. Maybe in another book I will commit such misdemeanors about Annie Dillard and Flannery O’Connor and Rosemary Clooney and Bonnie Raitt and Willa Cather and the great modern Irish poet Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill who hardly anyone has heard of but whose wild honest lusty poems buckle my knees. That would be yet another way to learn about being a good man, if you consider, as I do, that one very fine way to learn about men is to study women studying men.

I’d guess that half the readers of this book are men interested in the shifting threads of greatness in other men, and the other half are women, even more interested in the rich mystery of the characters of men.

Look: We are all, male and female alike, absorbed by what we might be at our best. We are all chasing after the mysterious nutritious song of the Creator. We are all riveted by art, by how human beings mill their unique and idiosyncratic talents into stories and songs and paintings and dances and sculptures and photographs and plays and films and moments that break your heart, make you howl with laughter, make you sense, for a brief and stunning moment, how brave we are, how foolish, how brief, how holy.

So this is a book of resurrections and resuscitations of ten men from the vast soup of human beings before and concurrent with you and me. To my mind these are men of eye-popping accomplishment and character who are overlooked, half-forgotten, sentenced to hagiography, or stashed lifeless in the canon rather than seen as very much alive, very much the sorts of people you’d happily sit and talk with over a pint of good ale. If the reader feels a spark of increased affection or respect or fellow-feeling for the subjects here after reading my accounts of them, I will be delighted. I have spent many happy days and nights in their company, chatting gaily with Stevenson over a bottle of Bordeaux, arguing about the nature of character with Plutarkos, talking at length with Jim Kjelgaard about the intricate lives of weasels and mink, watching Mister Blake’s flashing eyes as he talks of his visions of Christ, listening to Mister Morrison’s roaring holy poetry, listening to Paul Desmond tease gently about the memoir that he may or may not have written, and on and on.

The one profile subject here you would have no occasion whatsoever to know is the late Bob Boehmer of Oregon, but Bob was the most literary and devout man I ever met, and a really wonderful storyteller, and I include him here because he was my dear friend, because I miss him ferociously, and because I’d really resurrect him if I could. I can’t do that, so I tell you something of his hilarious and sweet story, as a sort of prayer for his soul, now traveled beyond my ken.

Bob also seems to me a very fine example of the millions of quiet men and women who are great brave fascinating kind-hearted colorful funny hard-working hard-praying tale-tellers, and by sharing some of his long story I want to celebrate and sing so many who live and die and pray generally unremarked by the world.

We are all storytellers, after all--that, and the headlong pursuit of love, which is the holiest thing of all, and the greatest gift, and the most eloquent proof of God, is what makes us human beings, capable of greatness.

These are stories of talented, troubled, extraordinary men

Spirited Men: Story, Soul & Substance is a compendium of essays by Brian Doyle that focus upon a series of creative, influential, geographically and chronologically diverse men.. These are stories of talented, troubled, extraordinary men ranging from Plutarch, William Blake, Robert Louis Stevens, James Joyce, H. Rider Haggard, Jim Kjelgaard, Van Morrison, Paul Desmond, Graham Greene, Paul Kelly, and Bob Boehmer. The one thing each of these unusual men had in common was their pursuit of spirituality and their capability for greatness. Spirited Men is inherently fascinating reading and Brian Doyle is an expert in telling the individual and dramatically different biographical stories that give the reader clues as to how to me a good man, to search for love, and to be capable of spirituality in a complicated world.

Author Brian Doyle is a man of fine words who has written about 11 other men of fine words--authors or musicians and songwriters.

This is really a man's (man's) book about what it means to be a man. The author says in his introduction: This book is a collection of resurrections, restorations, reconsiderations, appreciations, enthusiasm, headlong solos, laughing prayers, imaginary meetings with most unusual and most interesting men.

The author brought these men to life: Van Morrison, William Blake, Pultarch of Greece, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rider Haggard, Paul Desmond, Jim Kjelgaard, Graham Greene, James Joyce, Paul Kelly--and finally a special friend, Bob Boehmer.

Doyle writes about British writer Graham Greene, that he wrote about hearts--that was why he was a great novelist, with his great sub-sub-characters.

Writer Rider Haggard, who wrote stories for young adults about animals and boys and forests, is quoted as saying, "I started writing because it seemed just naturally to be heading in that direction anyhow."

As more of a jazz fan than a lover of the literary, I especially enjoyed the section on Paul Desmond, the amazing alto saxophone player known for his many years playing and traveling worldwide with the Dave Brubeck Quartet--and his own musical creations, such as "Take Five." Before Desmond died in 1977 at age 52 of lung cancer (ironic because he drank a lot and his liver was fine)--he decreed that the American Red Cross benefit from sales of his recordings and compositions. In the years since, the American Red Cross has received more than $3 million from his generosity.

Because of Doyle's focus on these men, I believe a man who loves to read about great men will really appreciate knowing more about these both common and--I sure did. That's powerful stuff!!

Brian Doyle recently introduced me to some of the most incredible, remarkable, noteworthy gentleman I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. I say this ruefully, because in reality when we met in a choral room beneath the arched grandeur of the Cathedral of the Madeline I only managed to embarrass myself and walk away quietly with a signed poem for a friend of Catholic descent. I say all this because Spirited Men is a walk with some of the finest people I have never met. They are diverse, deep and diligently indicative of all that is noteworthy of manhood and the honest pursuit of it. It is not that it is difficult to sing praises of Doyle's writing, but rather that juxtaposed there is nothing I can currently note as effulgently and sincerely as Doyle does. Sincerity. That seems to encapsulate the feelings I felt beneath the weighty grandeur of an edifice to divinity, sanctity, holiness. As well as the feelings I felt as I read the details of these Spirited Men. Sincerity is Holy. In Spirited Men you will meet Bob Boehmer, Paul Kelly, Jim Kjelgaard, Plutarch, Robert Louis Stevenson and several others. A smattering of writers, musicians and more, all of who are connected by shared substance and soul. One particularly poignant moment in the narrative is the examination of Doyle's rereading of Big Red as an adult. To readers who continued to approach literature long after it is required by public educators I would ask what was written that drew us back? For myself I can think of the individual stories and characters who I became intimately associated with through the printed page and Doyle's explication of this moment in my life was incredible. I love Doyle's writing.

This book was probably one of the best things I have read on spiritual insight in some time. It is written in simple terms for the average person who is seeking enlightenment to understand.

There have been many days and nights over the summer where I was too weak and exhausted to do anything but layi in bed and read. It was like having the company of a good friend shed some light on my being rather than all the doings I have done in life.

This is the definitive book on snook. It answered all my questions from where & when to fish, to what rig is best. Most of the info is about south & central Florida but there is quite a bit about Central America (where I plan to go snooking) where it's known as robalo.

Wonderful food from a wonderful chef

As she likes to point out, nothing Joanne Weir cooks is terribly difficult or complicated. The ingredients she calls for are not hard to find if one lives in a place of reasonable size. In a small town of 3,000 surrounded by farmland, the local supermarket may not carry certain items, but in larger locales frozen phyllo dough, a nice grade of olive oil, fresh herbs and nice cheeses should be available nowadays. The same should be true of a nice bottle of wine. Certainly, those who live in a city environment won't have any difficulty. What's amazing is how incredibly delectable Joanne Weir's recipes are given their relative simplicity.

"Weir Cooking in the City" is the companion volume to the television series of the same name, which can be seen on many PBS affiliates across the country. Ms. Weir's first position after graduating from cooking school was a five-year stint at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California, and her experience in that restaurant can be seen in her recipes. She stresses the use of fresh, pure ingredients and the results are excellent.

This sort of food could be served at any number of good restaurants and people would pay a handsome sum to have it. But Joanne Weir says that she thinks of herself as a teacher first and a chef second and what she has done here is to make superb food available to the home cook. It's probably not the sort of fare appropriate nightly for a family of six, but it's wonderful for a dinner party or an intimate meal for two. In fact, that's just how she sells her product -- food for relaxed entertaining. Nowadays, that's what I'm after.

I have tried and can highly recommend from this book several recipes. By all means, try the triple-ginger pineapple cake. It's to die for and very easy to make if you know how to separate eggs, beat egg whites until stiff but not dry and fold them into cake batter. You'll need fresh pineapple, crystallized (candied) ginger, fresh gingerroot and ground bottled ginger - and what full-sized supermarket in the United States doesn't have those? The rest of the ingredients are completely mundane - ordinary flour, brown sugar, butter, baking powder, salt, milk and eggs.

The roast Cornish game hens with toast bread crumb salsa are outstanding. Toasted bread crumb salsa, as it turns out, is a sort of condiment made with bread crumbs, herbs, olive oil, lemon and some other ingredients that is absolutely delicious on poultry or even a steak - and it's easy to make. Most supermarkets nowadays have plastic packets of fresh herbs in the produce department and the rest of the ingredients are no harder to find than the game hens themselves (which can be frozen ones).

Equally amazing is a delicious soup made with bottled clam juice instead of stock, fresh fennel, celery, potatoes, fresh oysters and a cup of champagne (use a $15 champagne for this and serve the rest to drink). She's creative - one quarter of the soup gets puréed and added back to the soup with some cream to thicken it, before the oysters are added. Thus, the soup still has diced vegetables for wonderful texture, but a creamy, thick consistency. The oysters go in right at the end so that they are only lightly cooked. It's amazingly good and not difficult at all. I admit, fresh oysters might be hard to find in the middle of the country . . . .

Joanne Weir's recipes take their inspiration from the countries that ring the Mediterranean Sea. Hence, you'll find lots of fresh herbs and garlic used in her dishes. Ms. Weir is especially keen on "small plates," those foods served in Mediterranean countries as appetizers, things served to start a meal. Plenty of those are included in this book in addition to main courses, soups, salads, and desserts.

All in all, I think Joanne Weir is a wonderful author of cookbooks, bringing the most delicious food imaginable into the homes of those of us who have moderately decent cooking skills, and "Weir Cooking in the City" is a great entry into her series of books. If you're lucky enough that your local PBS affiliate shows the analogous TV program, so much the better, because you can see her prepare all the recipes and, more, you can find out how much she loves to cook and share her gift for cooking with others.

Excellent Source for Entertaining with Food and Wine

This new book by author, teacher, and PBS TV chef show host is aimed at helping people entertain at home when they are in an environment such as downtown San Francisco, where virtually every type of foodstuff imaginable is a few blocks walk away. At worst, you may have to take a cable car or motor scooter trip for a mile or so to reach your objective. Life is tough.
That last cynical remark is not fair. This is a very good book on both cooking and entertaining. It is as good as Sheila Lukins' new book `Celebrate', but complimentary to that book as Lukins is focusing on inexpensive family entertaining and Weir's target is more for young couples with few children to eat up disposable income. Both books gain from offering food / beverage pairings. Weir is more parochial in that her beverages are all modest to higher priced wines. Weir's book is clearly better than Ina Garten's book on parties, as Weir offers a really valuable instruction on a lot of the nuts and bolts of organizing and prepping a party. It is not in the same league as the classic Martha Stewart `Entertaining', which is really directed at large, catered parties.
The first feature about this book which impresses me is a table of contents which lists every recipe in the book, in chapter and page order, and chapters are arranged by course. This feature is doubly valuable in that chapters are based on very logical courses familiar to modern American families. These chapters are:
Firsts (Weir knows her stuff here, as she wrote a book on Tapas and Mezes)
Salads
Soups
Mains and a few Sides (Why not go to the very small extra effort to split these up?)
Desserts
Weir's cuisine is centered on the Mediterranean, with some East Asian and Latin American dishes added for variety. Interspersed with main dishes are recipes for pantry preparations such as salsa, preserved lemons, dashi, and potato chips. Many dishes are familiar such as spaghetti and meatballs, or variations on familiar themes such as Panini Caprese (the old familiar mozzarella, tomato, and basil combination).
All the cooking instructions are mindful of tips and techniques familiar to most Food Network junkies, such as being careful not to burn the garlic when you do a sauté beginning with garlic in olive oil. The author is also brave enough to recommend making your own chicken stock and her recipe may not be worthy of Judy Rodgers, it is quite good for the home cook.
My biggest problem with the book is with the section on pantry items. I have never seen anyone succeed with a viable pantry-stocking list, leading me to believe that no fixed pantry list will work for anyone other than the person who makes it up. By all means, buy this book if you like to entertain at home, but avoid the author's advice on pantry items. Her giving us three (3) different lists compounds the error. One for the Mediterranean cuisine, one for a Latin American cuisine, and one for an Asian cuisine. Heaven forbid if you want to cook from all three. Let me just cite a few errors in the Mediterranean list.
Does not recommend salt packed anchovies and capers over products packed in olive oil.
Does not give any warning on spoilage risks for nuts, nut oils and whole grains.
Puts phyllo dough on the shelf. I believe this must be frozen to preserve beyond a few days.
Pictures mozzarella as a pantry item, while authorities I know say this must be a serve on day made item.
The pantry notion is doubly misguided since the book is aimed at city dwellers who are both short on living space and long on availability to nearby markets and specialty stores. Best strategy is to simply buy what you need when you need it, keep a careful eye on shelf life, and never, never buy anything because you may make something with it in the future. You never do.
A cookie cutter blurb from Alice Waters graces the dust jacket. I give Alice credit for supporting a former employee, but I suspect the value of her endorsement may be wearing itself a little thin by now. More surprising is a rare blessing from Madeline Kamman. Not bad.
This is a superior book if you like to entertain at home and you do not have the time to wade through books devoted to regional cuisines to pick out suitable dishes (although I suggest Patricia Wells' books are an exceptional resource on this matter).
Highly recommended for people who entertain at home and wine and food fanciers.

Working in a studio I often had access to record my own band and experiment. In the early '90s I recorded a six-song demo for a band that I was drumming with. We had only been a band for about three weeks when this demo made it into the hands of a local production company person, who at the time worked with RCA records. Although we didn’t end up with this label, the person who originally discovered us ended up managing our band and got us signed to a major label and many indie labels. It is great to have a backup plan, especially as a musician. Audio engineering is a great career option when being a musician isn't paying the bills. It allows you to still be creative and involved in the music scene. You may not get rich right away (or ever) but seeing your name on a CD you recorded is priceless.

About the Author
Tim Dittmar is a musician, recording and live sound engineer, producer, songwriter, and professor. Tim began his professional recording career in 1987 at Cedar Creek Recording studio in Austin, Texas. Before locating to Austin, Tim received an Associate in Arts in Radio/TV Production from Del Mar Junior College. He then spent much of the nineties touring with a punk group, recording bands, and running live sound on the infamous 6th street at various venues. He was hired in 2000 as a professor and full-time faculty member at Austin Community College where he currently teaches Audio Engineering I, Audio Engineering IV, and the Special Projects class. Tim heads up the Technical side of Commercial Music Management at the college. He has also been a returning lecturer at the University of Texas teaching Audio Production and Audio for Picture. Tim has worked in numerous studios in Austin, Los Angeles and Chicago, compiling over 300 album credits. Recording such artists as the Old 97's, Voxtrot, Dynamite Boy, King Missile and the Murdocks. In 2008 he was invited to moderate a panel at the Tape Op Conference in New Orleans where he spoke on "The State of Audio Education”. At present, he owns and operates Las Olas Recording in Georgetown, Texas. He currently tours and records with his wife in the group Annabella and can also be seen drumming with The Hearts & The Minds, Kristi Rae, and Everything's Gone Green.

Great instructional guide!

DISCLAIMER: Although this was given to me through Vine to review, unlike other questionable "reviewers", I actually take the time to USE the product or READ the book. So whatever score/review the product gets, it's absolutely earned. At no time is a product given a particular review or rating simply because I fear loosing Vine status. That's not how the Vine program operates.

Anyhoo, onto the review:

Plainly put, this is a great book. Not only does the author take the time to explain, in detail, what how and why things work the way they do, he also provides illustrations for the layman. I read this cover to cover over a period of a week and honestly learned quite a bit. And I've been in audio production for years! You can definitely tell the author knows his stuff and has actually DONE what he writes about. In lieu of some authors who just compile information and later jam it all together into what barely passes as a book.

I definitely applaud the author and highly recommend this book to those wishing to learn the basics, and to a point, the higher-level operation of sound reproduction.

99 Reasons to Read Audio Engineering 101

By the title, Audio Engineering 101, you know that Timothy A. Dittmar's book is going to cover that basics of Audio Engineering. Anytime you see that 101, as any community college student knows, you know it is going to be a rudimentary primer. Kind of Audio Engineering for Dummies. Some of the stuff is pretty basic, and I just kind of skimmed over it. Advice for interns, like not to tell clients how awful they sound, and don't sit around texting while rolling your eyes, etc., etc., etc..

But there is a lot of practical information and explanation of audio concepts like compression, noise gates, EQ, phlanging, and phase. I really like the microphone guide which shows various types and brands of microphones along with graphs of frequency response: Cascade Fat Head, Small-Diaphragm Condenser, Neumann U 87, or the ubiquitous Shure SM58. One chapter is a round table where questions are posed to a group of recording engineers like, what mic would you take with you on a desert island? There is a website where you can go and download audio clips that illustrate the concepts being discussed.

All in all, this is a handy book with a lot of good information that would be of interest to anyone interested in home recording or a career in audio engineering.

Interesting, somewhat useful, and pretty inconsistent

As someone who has recorded in a studio, and who has a digital recording system of his own, I gave this a try to see how it might help guide me through the recording process. First off, this book is not just about the technical end of recording - it also gives some good hints into interning, marketing, client relations, how to conduct yourself in the studio, etc. THIS portion of the book, although I will never utilize it, is pretty interesting and opened my eyes to a different side of the recording business.

The first 2/3 of the book, which actually cover recording techniques, is why I was interested in this book. Here, this book doesn't seem to know what it's target audience is. The title says "Beginner's Guide to Music Production", and some portions were actually geared to beginners - how to listen, how to place speakers, song structures, how to set up a recording room, place microphones, etc. But then some portions were exceedingly detailed - 23 pages of excruiating detail on the frequecy responses of different microphones. And the chapter on the basics of a mixing board, while covering basic information, seemed to presume an understanding of certain terminologies and processes that weren't defined (and this happened on a couple other occasions, as I remember). Maybe if the reader understood the chapter on signal flow (Chapter 8) before the chapter on mixing consoles (Chapter 6) it would help.

There are also some very basic sound clips and videos available on the internet as a companion to this book - these were referenced in the text, although the only way I knew how to access these were because the web address was on the back cover.

So, there is some good information here, but not all of it is geared toward the beginner as presumed by the title. This would be a good COMPANION reference for someone already familiar with basic recording techniques.

Interesting but One-sided, Avoiding Key Issues

When I started working in sociobiology, I incurred deep hostility from my academic colleagues and friends for suggesting that biology had anything to do with human behavior. My inspiration was E. O. Wilson's magnificent 1975 book Sociobiology. This books was mostly about sociality in non-humans (especially ants), but the last chapter was about humans and it got me hooked. Wilson was horribly and unjustly criticized and attacked for this work, even by his Harvard colleagues. See the excellent historical account of Ullica Segerstrale, Defenders of the Truth: The Sociobiology Debate (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2001).

The contributors of this collection claim, with some good reason, that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction, with genetics being trotted out to explain just about everything concerning human behavior. "Genetics will continue to play a central role in the life sciences," the authors write in the Introduction, "but the evidence suggests a far less reductionist role as scientists fully appreciate the dynamic nature of biological systems and the complex interactions among DNA, proteins, and the environment at all levels of organization within the system." The various contributions to this collection attempt to justify this assessment, with some success.

There is a Monster Anomaly in the literature on the genetics of behavior. On the one hand, the sociobiology of human behavior has matured over the last forty years (my own recent contribution, with Samuel Bowles, is A Cooperative Species, Princeton 2011), and behavioral genetics has shown that many aspects of behavior have high heritability (see Robert Plomin, John C. DeFries, Gerald McClearn and Michael McGuffin, Behavioral Genetics, New York: W. H. Freeman and Company, 2000). On the other hand, no one has discovered particular genes or gene networks that explain more than a miniscule fraction of the variance in behaviors across individuals. Evelyn Fox Keller, in an insightful chapter, notes that when we read that a certain gene explains some aspect of health or physiology, the author almost always means that when the gene mutates or is otherwise inactivated, the result is the deterioration of the characteristic in question. In other words, we don't know what the gene does, but we know what happens when it doesn't do it. That's not saying much, of course. For instance, if I pull the plug on my TV, I know the picture will go dark. That doesn't tell me much about how a TV works.

The contributors to this volume virtually all believe that genetics (phylogeny) must be combined with development (ontogeny), which is the project of so-called Evo-Devo (for an overview, see Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo by Sean B. Carroll). I consider this to be a really important project, but I think this volume is slanted towards critique a straw-man genetic determinism, without really replacing it with anything. The positive message that developmental pathways are highly creative and contingent is not supported by consistent data. Rather, each author in turn provides his or her personal take on what is wrong with genetic explanations. Of course, sociobiologists (like myself) would NEVER say that a behavioral pattern in humans has a "genetic explanation." No such notion has empirical support. Rather, we might say that members of a social species have "genetic predispositions" to behave in certain ways under certain conditions. The contributors appear to me to have found it sufficient to attack journalistic excesses rather than the professional literature.

It points out with particularity the many possible and probable mistakes in the process itself.
