The last section of the book swings from Silicon Valley to New York City, to the lonely, long-abandoned Hasbrook Homestead, as Malone and her children race to save the farm buildings before they collapse from years of neglect. In the end, at nearly ninety years of age, she fulfills her promise.

About the Author
Malone has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Fortune and The New York Times. He hosted three public television series including the PBS miniseries on social entrepreneurs, "The New Heroes." He is an adjunct professor at Santa Clara University, an associate fellow of the Said Business School at Oxford University and a Distinguished Friend of Oxford.

Charlie's Place captures the Homesteader's spirit.

Charlie's Place really captured the spirit of a true American homesteader. I felt how exciting it must have been to have actually lived during the time of the Oklahoma land rush. Having endured the heartbreak of loosing family, friends and home, Charlie Hasbrook never became a bitter man.

Charlie's Place

I found the book a bit toothy in the genealogy but in the end understood why. What our forefathers in the Oklahoma run went through is amazing. I enjoyed the history because my great grandmother was in one of those wagons when she was a small child.
