Forget Joseph Campbell. This is the ultimate myth book, hundreds of creation myths from all over the globe. Sproul shows that our socalled modern ideas--from the big bang to the steady state universe--repeat myths formed thousands of years ago, from the inhabitants of Mesopotamia to the South Sea islanders. Who needs a big bang when you have a "great cosmic copulation?"

How the World was Created -- According to the World

This is an incredibly thorough book that lists, in short story form, the creation myths from all over the world. It is incredibly thorough, covering even Inuit and Siberian legends. A great way to learn about the world's peoples by learning their folk tales of how the world was created. And what a great price for such an invaluable Cultural Anthropology book!

best of its kind

I have read a few books of this type, and although it's not my favorite overall mythology collection, for creation mythology specifically it can't be beat. I used it for an anthropology paper comparing creation myths from around the world and bought this just to for the paper but will definitely be holding on to it. The translation and presentation strikes the fine line that most books miss, most are either too focused on making the myth exiting and readable, or too focused on giving just the facts and the story becomes too boring. This book is right in between, the stories read like they are meant to: interesting and entertaining and at the same time loaded with information specific to the society who created them. the only thing I wish it had were some pictures, but overall I was very happy with my buy.

While most studies of this movement have focused on its male leaders and their interactions with society, Thekla Ellen Joiner raises new questions about gender and race by exploring Third Awakening revivalism as the ritualized performance of an evangelical social system defined by middle-class Protestant moral aspirations for urban America. Rather than approaching these events merely as the achievements of persuasive men, she views them as choreographed collective rituals reinforcing a moral order defined by ideals of femininity, masculinity, and racial purity.

            Joiner reveals how revivalist rhetoric and ritual shifted from sentimentalist identification of sin with males to a more hard-nosed focus on females, castigating “loose women” whose economic and sexual independence defied revivalist ideals and its civic culture. She focuses on Dwight L. Moody’s 1893 World’s Fair revival, the 1910 Chapman-Alexander campaign, and the 1918 Billy Sunday revival, comparing the locations, organization, messages, and leaders of these three events to depict the shift from masculinized to feminized sin. She identifies the central role women played in the Third Awakening as the revivalists promoted feminine virtue as the corrective to America’s urban decline. She also shows that even as its definition of sin became more feminized, Billy Sunday’s revivalism began to conform to Chicago’s emerging color line.

            Enraged by rapid social change in cities like Chicago, these preachers spurred Protestant evangelicals to formulate a gendered and racialized moral regime for urban America. Yet, as Joiner shows, even as revivalists demonized new forms of entertainment, they used many of the modern cultural practices popularized in theaters and nickelodeons to boost the success of their mass conversions.

            Sin in the City shows that the legacy of the Third Awakening lives on today in the religious right’s sociopolitical activism; crusade for family values; disparagement of feminism; and promotion of spirituality in middle-class, racial, and cultural terms. Providing cultural and gender analysis too often lacking in the study of American religious history, it offers a new model for understanding the development of a gendered theology and set of religious practices that influenced Protestantism in a period of enormous social change.

Gender Triumphs over Religion

At first glance this book looks like a comparative study of three major evangelistic campaigns in Chicago at the turn of the twentieth century: those of D. L. Moody, J. Wilbur Chapman, and Billy Sunday. In fact, Sin in the City is just a revised 1991 PhD dissertation, a tiresome academic production that rings the changes on race, class, and (especially) gender to the near exclusion of its erstwhile subject, religion. Not surprisingly, the final chapter, which purports to demonstrate a connection between the turn-of-the-century revivals and modern evangelicalism, is especially weak because the author has a limited understanding of modern evangelical religion.

Joiner's writing is not that bad when compared to similar productions of the academy. Still, there are a lot of sentences like, "Revivalism's ritualistic construction and expression of these dichotomies--in a heightened public sphere--provided both the means and the opportunity to encode these cultural assumptions with spiritual or immanent meanings." (16)

Academic authors regularly have difficulty taking the behavior of their historical characters at something approaching face value. So, for instance, when revivalists made profitable use of the notion that mothers' prayers followed their wayward children, they wouldn't consider investigating the possibility that mothers might actually have been doing a lot more long-distance praying for wayward children during this period than would have been the case earlier (when families were less separated geographically) or later (when mothers were less religious and more preoccupied with careers and personal lives). Or, when revivalists claimed that cities were more sinful than rural areas, that they had more than adequate evidence that this was indeed the case.

Some long-suffering graduate students will probably be required to find profundity in Joiner's book, but for the reader interested in investigating turn-of-the-century Chicago, the "Third Great Awakening," or modern evangelicalism, I suggest ignoring the thesis as much as possible and skimming the text for bibliography and occasional nuggets of useful information, especially material about women connected to the Chicago campaigns.

great routes

We've just come back from Spain and used this book as a guide cycling the Pyrennes route. The author includes 8 'routes' you may choose,each of them in a different part of spain. You absolutely need the detailed maps that the author reccomends as backup as some of the roads and markings have changed since it was written. Also the author rates the routes in difficulty and suggested that this particular one was only slightly challening when I would say it would be for the more experienced road cyclist,especially if you hope to complete each day in the times the author did!Phew! But the route really was amazing,quiet roads and breathtaking scenery,so I would definatly recommend this book if you are planning a trip to Spain.

Good for basic info. Choice of rides limited.

The basic info about how to get to and from Spain, road conditions, etc. was good. However, there are many many more good cycling roads in Spain than shown here. My primary interest was cycling the Camino de Santiago. There was nary a mention. Nor did it explain that you could not travel to Portugal from Spain with a bicycle on a train or bus, period. No bikes allowed! I think the Lonely Planet bike guides do a bee

A Passionate Exercise in Convoluted Academic Claptrap

David Lynch may be a surrealist, but his films require a multitude of analytical perspectives. But no matter how intelligent and well-thought out those perspectives ARE, it helps if the person writing them knows how to delineate what he's talking about.

Nieland has studied Lynch very well and thought about this argument very hard...unfortunately, he also failed to study the principles of informative writing. While he starts off his book with a well-articulated set of thesis statements, he dives into his examples illustrating his argument before he's completely described what his argument is ABOUT. And this exuberance with his own concepts has them constantly segueing into each other to the point where you can't quite tell which argument he's trying to demonstrate at any given time. His sentences make sense, and his use of adjectives (and brother does he LOVE his adjectives) are accurate, but he too often uses the adjectives as nouns and their very utterances seem to constitute conclusive statements to him. As a result, he confidently rests his case at the end of paragraphs that started talking about one thing and ruled on another one altogether.

It seems to me that Neiland fell into the trap of losing his way in finishing one argument and then wedges another one in to bridge the two and then decides that the overlapping thesis proposals mean this weird hybridization of concepts somehow makes some large universal sense. It doesn't. If anything, it makes it hard to keep track of where he's going with anything he's talking about. His circular focus tangles his logic to an inveigling degree and I could barely make heads or tails of what he was trying to say.

Finally, Neiland's voice is that irritating exhibitionism found in countless film texts: the use of 25-cent and 50-cent words to emphasize the seriousness with which he's writing; the academic sentence structure with so many subject-verb relationships that you can barely stay on track; the tone that celebrates the obviousness of what he considers to be his "Eureka" insights. Thankfully, he's a talented writer and he isn't condescending, but he's so jubilant about his perspective on Lynch that he thinks it's obvious to the reader as well, and he writes out his analysis with the kind of run-on logic that we use to keep things aligned in our heads, but fail to make sense when written down stream-of-conscious-style.

I like the concepts he's introduced and it certainly is an interesting way to think of Lynch movies...but I tell ya, books like this one remind me why I quit reading film analysis a long time ago.

Una buenisima historia que nos lleva desde el Uruguay de los '20 hasta el Paris de los '50, siguiendole los pasos a Enrique Amorim, el supuesto amante de Lorca y "groupie" original de las artistas de la vanguardia de la epoca.

This faux-biographer is no García Lorca fan.

Este libro interesa principalmente por referencia a momentos histórico-culturales, pero Santiago Roncagliolo se refiere a García Lorca con un dejo de desprecio y una evidente intención de tumbar al ídolo del pedestal. No sabemos, por su descripción, si sus alegatos están verdaderamente fundados en un hechos innegables o en deducciones y sospechas. Se ampara principalmente en observaciones subjetivas y obviamente tendenciosas de gente que no estaban impresionados con García Lorca para describir las actividades de éste en Buenos Aires: lo mejor que dicen del poeta es que era arrogante, egocéntrico y vago. Luego toma aseveraciones sin fundamento ni prueba como realidad: por ejemplo, que Entrique Amorim haya dicho que tenía enterrados en Salto los restos de García Lorca no representan evidencia contundente de nada.

En las primeras 20 páginas del texto, Roncagliolo afirma que no hay versión completa de la obra dramática surrealista de García Lorca, "El público". Esta obra tuvo su estreno mundial en abril del 1978 en el Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, promovida por mi amigo el doctor Juan Antonio Rodríguez Pagán. La obra se presentó tan completa como el texto en que se basó.

Una vez leí esa referencia incorrecta de Roncagliolo, se me aniquiló la presunción de veracidad del resto del libro.

yes, it IS a textbook

Previous reviewer claimed this is a textbook. He/she is correct. It is a textbook, but a very well written one. In this day and age when as what some clever wonks have described as "Detroit ruins porn" sells beaucoup books, it is nice to actually read a book that is not salacious and really does try to explain exactly why Big D is in the trouble it is in. It is a sociological study, as well as an historical tome. It is fantastic. I had forgotten about Malice Green. Nevers and Budzen, too. All three of them got a whole lot of air play on NPR quite a few years ago. Same goes for Vincent Chin. I was somewhat unaware of the friction between Chaldean store owners and Black people in Detroit. Akin, I guess, to the misunderstandings between Korean shopkeepers and African American customers on the West Coast. Police/civilian relationships are highlighted. Schisms between radical and moderate Black organizations and leaders are also investigated. Plenty of statistics to back up the theories that these two grand writers share. If you want to get beyond the dog and pony show Detroit ruins porn level of the challenges facing Detroit, this book may be of interest to you.

A Nice Companion Piece....

Many books dealing with Detroit's pre-and-post riot racial issues either fall between too much information and over analysis or not enough and deal in generalities and social studies speak. This book falls into the latter category.

Similar books: "The Origins of the Urban Crisis" by Thomas Sugrue and "Violence in the Model City," by Sidney Fine are more developed and realized books but their finite publication date prevents them from reaching past the Mayor Cavanagh years, leaving out post riot analysis on: the 70s, STRESS, Chaldeans/African American relations, Vincent Chin's murder and Mayors Young, Archer and Kilpatrick's efforts at improving Detroit's image and racial bridge building. Darden and Thomas do a fine job addressing the above mentioned issues as well as shining a light on the lesser known influences of Focus/Hope.

However, the tone and lack of any substantial resolutions and the reliance of graphs and charts gives this book a textbook tone, including a "conclusion" paragraph at the end of each chapter.

This book would make and excellent companion piece to the beforementioned books, but lacks the insight as a stand alone piece.

An Incomplete understanding of the technical Boolean foundation of Keynes's TP

There are just too many errors concerning the A Treatise on Probability (TP;1921) and Keynes's Logical theory of probability in Barnett's book from pp.116-121 to recommend it for a specialist on Keynes. However,I can recommend the book for the general reader who will not be able to figure out what Barnett is talking about in his discussion of Keynes and probability on pp.116-121.
First, Keynes's TP is built on the interval valued probabilities first explicitly analyzed by George Boole in his 1854 The Laws of Thought. Adam Smith ,of course,was the first to use an explicit interval valued approach in his The Wealth of Nations (WN;1776).Only if all the relevant information is complete and available for a decision maker to use before he has to make a decision can exact, definite, precise numerical probabilities be derived. This is the case in urn ball models or lotteries. Keynes 's concept of the weight of the evidence ,w, defined on the unit interval from 0 to 1,measures the completeness of the relevant evidence .If w=1,then numerical probabilities can be calculated using the
subjective approach of Ramsey, de Finetti,and Savage, or the limiting-relative frequency approaches of Von Mises and Kolmogorov. In
cases where , in fact, the weight of the evidence ,w, equals 1,then Keynes's logical approach ,in the limit ,becomes indistinguishable from
either the subjectivist or frequentist approaches. Thus ,in fields like physics, chemistry, biology ,engineering, etc., where the weight of the
evidence ,w,of ,for instance, the calculation of probabilities dealing with the behavior of molecules, gas particles, cells, genes,
chromosomes ,bosons ,electrons, or neutrinos, equals or approaches 1, as the cumulative evidence from laboratory designed experiments
being replicated and duplicated becomes vast,Keynes would agree that a single number can be used in the estimate of the probability of
these types of propositions about events. However ,this is not the case in fields like economics ,business, finance,social science , liberal arts
or practical everyday decision making by humans.
In summary, Kolmogorov's axioms are useless ,for example ,if a business man is attempting to figure out the probability of success or failure of a new capital good or of a new technological innovation or advance in any field. Barnett's belief that ".... Keynes's book was soon made almost completely obsolete as a mathematical theory of probability by the publication of A. N. Kolmogorov's groundbreaking Foundations of the Theory of Probability in 1933,which pioneered a comprehensive set -theoretic approach to the subject."(Barnett,p.121)means that Barnett has not fully understood the interval valued nature of Keynes's contribution in the TP. He can increase his understanding by reading any of the books on Boole's interval valued probability published by Theodore Hailperin. He could ,of course, also reread those portions of the TP ,Parts II and III,based on Boole's 1854 The Laws of Thought .

Book for economist

The book concentrates on the development of Keynes economics ideas. Other details of his life are only sketched. I think the author is pretty knowledgeable, although he would refrain from using "One economist supports this idea of Keynes" without naming this economist. In any case one is not enough. Overall a good book for economist, I am not sure if it will be as interesting for general public.

About the Author
Jane Haddam (b. 1951) is an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988). Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s most recent novels are Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

Book Two of Five (so far as I know)

The five titles are, in order: Sweet, Savage Death; Wicked, Loving Murder; Death's Savage Passion; Rich, Radiant Slaughter; and Once And Always Murder. I have a few of the author's books written as Jane Haddam. These are lighter and funnier in tone. Except for the fifth book, they all skewer the publishing business, particularly Romance. (Now you know where the strange titles come from.)
The exerpt stops before the acid really starts. You should enjoy what Pay McKenna tells us she did with a past issue of "Writing". The descriptions (and dialog) are what make this book so much fun to read. You have unpleasant characters, losers, eccentrics, and insights into Romance Writers, not to mention the Hazards of Becoming/Being a Writer.
So who killed Michael Brookfield? Was it his Abusive Aunt Alida? One of his brothers? His aunt's right-hand woman, the terribly perfect Felicity Aldershot? Marty the Comptroller? Mrs. Haskell the Irate Client? Ivy the even more seriously screwed client? There is something definitely rotten at Writing Enterprises, and its not just their advice (or even Michael's corpse). If it weren't for her best friend, Phoebe, McKenna would love to walk out on it all.
Don't let the boring cover fool you. Even the original Crime Club dustjacket with the partial view of a person whose neck is wrapped around three times by a black ribbon with red hearts on it was more interesting -- and more fitting for such a funny book.

The World of Freelance Writing

This is the second of Papazoglou's "Pay McKenna" mysteries. The others are, in order, SWEET, SAVAGE DEATH (First), DEATH'S SAVAGE PASSION, RICH, RADIANT SLAUGHTER and ONCE AND ALWAYS MURDER. They can be read in any order, but there's a slight edge to reading them in order if you can.

The central character is a Manhattan-based writer from Old Money New England, so the story takes place in New York, and most of the characters are romance writers or allied trades, with action centering on the editorial offices of WRITING magazine. It's a good workable mystery, and the "Pay McKenna" titles are always funny, but what makes it is the description of our heroine--foisted on the magazine as editor for a romance special issue--and her exploration of the magazine. Reread at regular intervals for about 20 years now. Just buy it.

Where to go from here: There are two other non-series Papazoglou titles, CHARISMA and SANCTITY, which I would rate a nearer suspense than mystery. More recently, under the pen name "Jane Haddam" the same author has done the "Gregor Demarkian" mysteries.

Pay McKenna, Reluctant Detective
