John Maynard Keynes (Routledge Historical Biographies), by Vincent Barnett

John Maynard Keynes is arguably the most important and influential economist of the twentieth century, and stands alongside Adam Smith and Karl Marx as one of the most famous economic thinkers of all time. Keynes’s radical reassessment of the accepted principles of economics led to new ways of thinking about how to deal with financial crises and economic depressions, and encouraged governments to increase levels of state investment to create economic growth.

This historical biography shows how Keynes was more than an academic theorist and how his policy proposals had a significant impact on the economic and financial architecture of many Western countries from the 1920s onward, and on the post-war international financial system. It also tells the story of his colourful private life - Keynes was an active member of the Bloomsbury group of artists and intellectuals, he entertained various ‘secret’ male lovers in his youth, he married a famous Russian ballerina in 1925 and he was also an astute collector of fine art and antiquarian books. Vincent Barnett emphasizes the relationship between the personal and professional by presenting the book chapters in pairs, examining first the central features of Keynes’s life, personal development and policy ideas over the period in question, and then the theoretical content of his major writings from the same period.

Barnett argues controversially that allowing psychology a much greater role within economics was a main but often-neglected feature of The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, and that Keynes’s policy writings were more concerned with the Britain’s national interest than is sometimes recognised. The result is a concise new biography that is both intellectually rigorous and easily accessible to students and anyone else seeking to understand the life and work of England‘s foremost economist.

Review

'Vincent Barnett's biography...joins the ranks of an honourable band of such works...(He) writes very clearly and brings his subject to life in subdued but informative English prose. In around 300 pages, he provides many insights into not only the biographical dimension but also the academic contribution of his protagonist...likely to be of interest to both undergraduates and postgraduate students of the field, particularly due to the author's clarity of expression and readable style.' ― Malcolm Warner, Judge Business School, Cambridge University, UK

'Barnett succeeds brilliantly at making his account entertaining as well as informative. This volume, therefore, would serve as an excellent primer for anyone seeking a readable but scholarly introduction to the ideas and life of the Twentieth Century's most important economist.' ― Professor Richard Toye, University of Exeter, in 'Britain and the World', vol.8 no.2, 2015.

About the Author

Vincent Barnett has been a Research Fellow on numerous economics and economic history projects at various UK Universities. His previous publications include E.E. Slutsky as Economist and Mathematician (2011), Marx (2009), and A History of Russian Economic Thought (2005).

An Incomplete understanding of the technical Boolean foundation of Keynes's TP
By Michael Emmett Brady
There are just too many errors concerning the A Treatise on Probability (TP;1921) and Keynes's Logical theory of probability in Barnett's book from pp.116-121 to recommend it for a specialist on Keynes. However,I can recommend the book for the general reader who will not be able to figure out what Barnett is talking about in his discussion of Keynes and probability on pp.116-121.
First, Keynes's TP is built on the interval valued probabilities first explicitly analyzed by George Boole in his 1854 The Laws of Thought. Adam Smith ,of course, was the first to use an explicit interval valued approach in his The Wealth of Nations (WN;1776).Only if all the relevant information is complete and available for a decision maker to use before he has to make a decision can exact, definite, precise numerical probabilities be derived. This is the case in urn ball models or lotteries. Keynes 's concept of the weight of the evidence ,w, defined on the unit interval from 0 to 1,measures the completeness of the relevant evidence .If w=1,then numerical probabilities can be calculated using the
subjective approach of Ramsey, de Finetti, and Savage, or the limiting-relative frequency approaches of Von Mises and Kolmogorov. In
cases where , in fact, the weight of the evidence ,w, equals 1,then Keynes's logical approach ,in the limit ,becomes indistinguishable from
either the subjectivist or frequentist approaches. Thus ,in fields like physics, chemistry, biology ,engineering, etc., where the weight of the
evidence ,w,of ,for instance, the calculation of probabilities dealing with the behavior of molecules, gas particles, cells, genes,
chromosomes ,bosons ,electrons, or neutrinos, equals or approaches 1, as the cumulative evidence from laboratory designed experiments
being replicated and duplicated becomes vast,Keynes would agree that a single number can be used in the estimate of the probability of
these types of propositions about events. However ,this is not the case in fields like economics ,business, finance, social science , liberal arts
or practical everyday decision making by humans.
In summary, Kolmogorov's axioms are useless ,for example ,if a business man is attempting to figure out the probability of success or failure of a new capital good or of a new technological innovation or advance in any field. Barnett's belief that ".... Keynes's book was soon made almost completely obsolete as a mathematical theory of probability by the publication of A. N. Kolmogorov's groundbreaking Foundations of the Theory of Probability in 1933,which pioneered a comprehensive set -theoretic approach to the subject."(Barnett,p.121)means that Barnett has not fully understood the interval valued nature of Keynes's contribution in the TP. He can increase his understanding by reading any of the books on Boole's interval valued probability published by Theodore Hailperin. He could ,of course, also reread those portions of the TP ,Parts II and III,based on Boole's 1854 The Laws of Thought .

Book for economist
By Ilya M. Rakhkovsiy
The book concentrates on the development of Keynes economics ideas. Other details of his life are only sketched. I think the author is pretty knowledgeable, although he would refrain from using "One economist supports this idea of Keynes" without naming this economist. In any case one is not enough. Overall a good book for economist, I am not sure if it will be as interesting for general public.
