Law and the Question of the Animal: A Critical Jurisprudence (Law, Justice and Ecology)From Routledge

This book addresses the problem of ‘animal life’ in terms that go beyond the usual extension of liberal rights to animals. The discourse of animal rights is one that increasingly occupies the political, ethical and intellectual terrain of modern society. But, although the question of the status of animals holds an important place within a range of civil, political and technological disciplines, the issue of rights in relation to animals usually rehearses the familiar perspectives of legal, moral and humanist philosophy. ‘Animal law’ is fast becoming a topic of significant contemporary interest and discussion. This burgeoning interest has not, however, been matched by renewed inquiry into the jurisprudential frames and methods for the treatment of animals in law, nor the philosophical issue of the ‘human’ and the ‘animal’ that lies at law’s foundation. Responding to this interest, Law and the Question of the Animal: A Critical Jurisprudence brings together leading and emerging critical legal theorists to address the question of animality in relation to law’s foundations, practices and traditions of thought. In so doing, it engages a surprisingly underdeveloped aspect of the moral philosophies of animal rights, namely their juridical register and existence. How does ‘animal law’ alter our juridical image of personality or personhood? How do the technologies of law intersect with the technologies that invent, create and manage animal life? And how might the ethical, ontological and ceremonial relation between humans and animals be linked to a common source or experience of law?

What is Enlightenment? (Kant's Questions), by Samuel Fleischacker

"Have the courage to use your own understanding! - that is the motto of enlightenment." - Immanuel Kant

The Enlightenment is one of the most important and contested periods in the history of philosophy. The problems it addressed, such as the proper extent of individual freedom and the challenging of tradition, resonate as much today as when they were first debated. Of all philosophers, it is arguably Kant who took such questions most seriously, addressing them above all in his celebrated short essay, An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?

In this engaging and lucid book, Samuel Fleischacker first explains and assesses Kant’s philosophy of Enlightenment. He then considers critics of Kant’s views - from Burke and Hegel to Horkheimer and Adorno - and figures he regards as having extended Kant’s notion of enlightenment, such as Feuerbach, Marx, Habermas, Foucault, and Rawls.

Throughout, he demonstrates how Kant holds two distinct theories of enlightenment. On the one hand, Kant proposes a ‘minimal’ view, where to be enlightened is simply to engage in critical public discussion, allowing diversity of opinion to flourish. On the other, he argues that Kant elsewhere calls for a ‘maximal’ view of enlightenment, where, for example, an enlightened person cannot believe in a traditional religion. With great skill Fleischacker shows how these two views are taken in a multitude of directions by both critics and advocates of Kant’s philosophy.

Arguing that Kant’s minimal enlightenment is a precondition for a healthy proliferation of cultures, religious faiths and political movements, What is Enlightenment? is a fascinating introduction to a key aspect of Kant’s thought and a compelling analysis of philosophical thinking about the Enlightenment. Including helpful chapter summaries and guides to further reading, it is ideal for anyone studying Kant or the philosophy of the Enlightenment, as well as those in related disciplines such as politics, history and religious studies.

Review

‘The book has much to recommend it. It ranges widely and discusses a variety of thinkers, both familiar and somewhat less familiar. It is attentive to discussions of the concept of enlightenment that Kant provided in texts other than the now-familiar essay from 1784 (e.g., his 1786 contribution to the Pantheism Dispute "What is Orientation in Thinking?") and examines the implications of Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason.’ - Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"First-rate scholarship and fascinating reading. Fleischacker’s account of both Kant’s conception of enlightenment and its complex and variegated legacy should be mandatory reading for philosophers and historians interested in enlightenment ideals or their critique." - Marcia Baron, Indiana University, USA, and University of St. Andrews, UK

"There is no shortage of critics for whom the Enlightenment condemns itself by its hubris, its cultural arrogance, and its imperialist tendencies. But does the appeal to the ideal of becoming enlightened involve dictating what will be believed by those who achieve this ideal? Or is it merely a matter of how those who are enlightened hold the beliefs they do (thereby preserving humility and securing greater allowance for pluralism)? Samuel Fleischacker, in an argument that distinguishes itself in equal measure by its learning and its lucidity, shows that Kant was torn between these two conceptions, and so were his philosophical successors. What results is a terrifically enhanced appreciation of the complexity and richness of the Kantian legacy." - Ronald Beiner, University of Toronto, Canada

"A rich introduction to post-Kantian philosophy. It would be an excellent selection for courses in the history of ideas, as well as for courses specifically focused on Kant and his critics." - Lara Denis, Agnes Scott College, USA

"Fleischacker brings out not only the contemporary value of Kant's work but also some of its limits and ambiguities, especially with respect to a distinction between "minimal" and "maximal" conceptions of Enlightenment, political liberalism, and freedom of expression. This is a volume that should be of interest to a very wide range of scholars, and of use to readers at all levels." - Karl Ameriks, University of Notre Dame, USA

"Crystal-clear yet cutting-edge, this new analysis is particularly strong on the subtleties of Kant's concept of Enlightenment, proceeding to shed fresh light on Foucault, Habermas and Rawls. This book accomplishes a double feat: helping students to orient their reading of Kant, while challenging teachers and scholars to reorient theirs." - Fania Oz-Salzberger, University of Haifa, Israel

'... a considered and timely discussion of matters of current interest that addresses not just students of political and social philosophy, but a broad audience, which it fully deserves to reach.' - Katerina Deligiorgi, History of Political Thought

Review
In her passionately-argued and critically engaging study of creative writing, Nancy Dafoe calls on her 14 years of experience as a writer and teacher of writing. Dafoe’s legacy to her students shines through in her efforts to eliminate what she calls “our collective inarticulateness.” Only when student writers feel personally invested in their writing can they become the voices who will leave their own legacy, Dafoe argues, and she clearly pursues the route to such a legacy through lively examples from her own experience and cogent theory. Writing is a means toward discovery; so is this book. (Karla Alwes, distinguished teaching professor, English, State University of New York at Cortland)

This book is a gift of treasured strategies, experiences and effective practices for educators at all levels in developing the art and skill of writing with 21st century learners. In each chapter, Nancy Dafoe eloquently engages the reader with the voice of an experienced practitioner and the heart of a highly effective teacher by sharing valuable insights in igniting creativity in the teaching and learning of writing. Breaking Open the Box is a timely and much needed resource for our profession. (Donna DeSiato, superintendent,East Syracuse Minoa Central School District)

Students have more to say than they realize, and being able to give them liberating choices with which to express ideas and feelings is cause for celebration. Thanks to Nancy Dafoe, teachers will no longer have to plow through piles of poorly written, unimaginative work by bored students who are not invested in their work. Breaking Open the Box restores a sense of play and discovery to the writing process. What better gift can we give our students and teachers than the means to clear and creative communication as well as the courage and pride that result? (Gwynn O’Gara, Sonoma County Poet Laureate 2010-2012 and California Poet in the Schools since1989)

Nancy Dafoe is a brilliant secondary English teacher who motivates even the most reluctant student writers. In her book Breaking Open the Box, she shares her most successful strategy for engaging students in literary analysis and the analytical writing process: providing creative choice. After applying her strategy in my own classroom, I watched as my students threw themselves into their writing and blossomed as critically thinking intellectuals. Nancy's is a must-read book for teachers hoping to help their students meet their full potential as writers and readers of literature. (Maureen Watkins, secondary English teacher, ESM Central High School)

Mrs. Dafoe has improved my writing and critical analysis abilities immeasurably. Through her guidance, mastering the true power of the English language, I learned that the best writing is inextricably linked to creativity and that stretching the limits of language every now and then is desirable—not just acceptable. Learning how to use word play and complex metaphors effectively does not come naturally, but Mrs. Dafoe makes it extremely accessible. Her methods result in a whole new world of expressive and analytical skills; the creative methods she teaches are exhilaratingly free from illusions of constraint that separate good writing from great writing. (Thomas Marini, ESM CHS alumnus, SUNY Binghamton alumnus, medical school student)

Nancy Dafoe’s creative writing class provided an opportunity for existential growth that I have yet to find since. Whether we recalled the days’ absurdities, noted a meaningful quotation from another author, or simply mused about a meaningful observation, our journals were about our words, our thoughts, our dreams. We were always encouraged to be creative, and yet, in offering freedom, Mrs. Dafoe brought to her lessons a specificity that required us to hone in on meaning. By the end of each semester, I felt has if I had grown as a person as well as a writer. I was able to embrace my niche to quiet the heart, a moment to decipher the whirlwind of thought, and absorb the instruction to give each heartstring a voice. (Olivia Martin, ESM CHS alumna, LeMoyne College alumna, published poet)

Dafoe (poet, fiction writer, and teacher) presents as her central thesis the argument that "teaching our students to write expressively and well may be the most valuable lesson we can offer." She concludes that techniques for creative writing may be the best method for doing so. The author offers several chapters' worth of advice on creative-writing pedagogies, brief assignment descriptions, and sample student essays. Where her argument falls apart, however, is due to a methodological confusion. The book, while maintaining a pretense of being action research, largely consists of lore; its claims are supported primarily by anecdote or quotation of others. In particular, she relies heavily upon Peter Elbow, whose expressivist work--while foundational to the field--has been thoroughly problematized by contemporary researchers and thinkers about composition. This confusion is especially frustrating because the strongest part of the book is an intriguing (though brief) chapter on how to set up action research in writing classrooms. Though the book claims an audience of high school teachers and college composition instructors, most compositionists will likely find the author's ideas problematic or old hat. The book may be somewhat useful, however, for education students looking for ideas for lesson plans. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates. (CHOICE)

From Booklist
With environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, and diseases spread by vectors and contaminated food in the news, people need information about the effects of these problems. This book offers an overview of the major fields that compose this discipline. The introduction defines environmental health, its concerns, and the consequences of contamination. The rest of the book covers specific areas of environmental health: ecology, toxicology, epidemiology, food-borne disease, vector-borne disease, air quality, water quality, radiation, and occupational health. Each chapter begins with a vignette illustrating a problem, followed by key concepts of the topic, discussion questions, and a bibliography. The book is aimed at health-care professionals who may encounter conditions caused by environmental contamination, but students and those interested in the subject will find it useful. A background in basic science and mathematics will be necessary to use the information effectively. Recommended for large public and academic libraries. --Barbara Bibel

Modern chemicals and technology support living in the contemporary society. These same substances also make people ill, damage plants and animals, and affect our environment. Written in plain English, this handbook is a comprehensive source on everyday environmental health issues. It uses language for general readers, college students, environmental health practitioners, lawyers, public administrators, and regulators. When medical terms are introduced, the layperson’s equivalent is enclosed in parentheses, such as afebrile (not having a fever). Environmental factors rarely enter into the clinician's differential diagnosis (p. x). International in scope, authors describe ailments that originated in diverse locations, such as Queensland fever. They also focus upon the symptoms rather than the industrial cause: black lung is covered, but not the industry from which it is derived—coal mining. . . .This volume will prove useful to college students, environmental health practitioners, lawyers, public administrators, and regulators. The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy, by David Halberstam

An illuminating and comprehensive look at the remarkable—and tragically shortened—career of one of America’s most promising leaders
Structured around the 1968 Democratic presidential campaign, The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy offers an in-depth exploration of Robert Kennedy, both as a man and a politician. Kennedy’s mass appeal to minority groups, his antiwar stance, and his support from Catholics made him unlike any other politician of his stature in the late 1960s. Acclaimed journalist David Halberstam dives into Kennedy’s career, covering his work as US attorney general and campaign manager for his brother John, his run for a New York state senate seat, and his candidacy in the 1968 Democratic presidential primary. Through this crucial period, he charts Kennedy’s evolution as one of the nation’s most clear-headed progressives, ultimately revealing a man who—even now—personifies the shift toward a more equal America. This ebook features an illustrated biography of David Halberstam including rare images from the author’s estate.

Review
“Far and away the best book written about Senator Kennedy.” —The New York Times

About the Author
David Halberstam (1934–2007) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and bestselling author. He is best known for both his courageous coverage of the Vietnam War for the New York Times,as well as for his twenty-one nonfiction books—which cover a wide array of topics, from the plight of Detroit and the auto industry to thecaptivating origins of baseball’s fiercest rivalry. Halberstam wrote for numerous publications throughout his career and, according to journalist George Packer, single-handedly set the standard of “the reporter as fearless truth teller.”

ROBERT KENNEDY ON HIS OWN
By BeatleBangs1964
David Halberstam does an excellent job of portraying Robert Kennedy in a sympathetic, yet objective light. This particular work focuses on the last years of Robert Kennedy's life and his career in politics.
Elected N.Y. Senator in 1964, Robert Kennedy was literally coming into his own. Prior to his successful senatorial election, he was the Attorney General during his older brother's tenure in office. Fortunately Robert Kennedy is not eclipsed by his brother, President John Kennedy in this work. Halberstam shows how Robert Kennedy came into his own.
Confronted with making decisions without his brother's input was a big and bitterly painful adjustment the Senator had to make; indeed, winning the 1964 election had to be an impetus that pushed him into a more visible position.
This particular work follows Robert Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign; readers travel with the Senator from state to state, immersed in the issues of the day. The final campaign curtain descends in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968 the night Robert Kennedy was assassinated. This book stays a step behind that final curtain; instead of revisting the horrendous night of June 5, 1968, Halberstam stops short and appears almost timid to move beyond a certain point.

A delicious read
By babaganouj
On a shady court house lawn in Brooklyn stands the statue of Robert F. Kennedy. People walk by. I wonder if they notice the statue or realize who he was.
Open Road Integrated Media has released as an e-book David Halberstam's memoir of Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 campaign for President.
Halberstam's writing is delicious. The reporting is fresh. The book was written months after RFK's assassination. It captures the spirit of the times and the excitement of Kennedy's campaign, unfettered by historical analysis.

RFK was a political meteor. Moments after claiming his greatest victory---the California Democratic primary---his star was extinguished by an assassin.
JFK and RFK were generational figures. JFK was the culmination of the rise of the World War II generation. RFK captured the spirit and the hopes of the youth culture. Alone among the candidates for president he connected with the Blacks, the poor and the Latinos. His campaign was not about the restoration of JFK, but about racial conciliation and social change.

After RFK was killed, the dull, establishment figure of Hubert Humphrey won the nomination, only to be defeated by Richard Nixon, who advocated benign neglect of our racial problems.

Today, we have a Black Democratic President. The most conservative member of the Supreme Court is a Black Republican. A conservative Mexican American Republican from Texas is pushing his way into the national spotlight.

I wonder how much easier we would have reached such markers had RFK finished his odyssey.

Robert Kennedy Saves This Book
By David Wineberg
Robert Kennedy was a master manager, but an uncertain, conflicted candidate. That is the essence of this inside look at the months of 1968 when RFK took on the sitting president and his own party. It is a real-time, visceral, fly-on-the-wall account, embellished with commentary about the country, the electorate, and the party.

But it is a surprisingly tough read. It seems to be a flood of reminiscences assembled from Halberstam's notes at the time. As such they are a good "you are there" scene setter. But as a result, they are also disjointed, inelegant and incomplete.

There are numerous places where Halberstam just lost me, because of antecedents. I don't know whether the "he" refers to the antecedent, or someone else. Often, I turned out to be wrong. Sometimes he starts using someone's nickname, and I had to figure out who it was. You're supposed to know most of the characters already, because many get no introduction; they just appear as authorities of one sort or another. You're supposed to know what ADA and Hickory Hill are. And maddeningly, I had trouble in the first chapter keeping track of whether he was talking about JFK or RFK, because he calls them both Kennedy. As for inside jokes, I still don't understand why "Who's the pool TV man getting him when he shaves tomorrow?" (pg 75) is uproariously funny, but seems to deserve brackets and quotes. And fragments of sentences just add to the bumpy ride. There are badly structured sentences, difficult to absorb. I guess in 1969, when the original was published, everything was fresh in the public mind. But it isn't today.

Robert Kennedy saves this book.

My favorite moment was in Chicago, where RFK humbled himself in front of Mayor Daley, the godfather of The Machine. Kennedy asked him for support and advice in his campaign, and Daley's contribution was "Get a haircut."

RFK became more and more radical every day. Every stop, every speech put him in front of more poverty, prejudice and hypocrisy, and it ate away at him. His positions became more and more divorced from the mainstream, until just before the California primary he declared: "My first responsibility is to the United States, not the Democratic Party....Feeling as strongly as I do, I can do nothing other than what I do." Oh, for a Robert Kennedy in Washington today.

It's a Lose/Lose Situation
By Kim Wideman
I honestly bought this book mostly because I have followed Lysa for years, starting with her testimony about adoption. However, this book is written for anyone that not only has a struggle with weight, but also cooks for a family or just has a general struggle with feeling guilty over something ALL the time ~ like me. I wrote that this book creates a lose/lose situation, and here is what I mean. It can encourage you through scripture to lose weight and lose guilt...but what I didn't mention in my review title is this ~ the perspective and encouragement I GAINED from this read far outweighs the benefits of what I can lose. I was honestly in tears by the third chapter. I had never really realized how much not only I eat for reward and happiness, but I also subjected my family to this. My kids do something well..."Where do you want to go to eat?" or "What special meal do you want me to make you?" is always my first question. Wow. My husband and I are both dealing with the creeping on of weight, and I turn 40 in 2 1/2 months. This book could not have been put in my hands at a better time. What a great and gracious God we have! I pray as you open the pages of this book you will not expect a quick fix diet plan, because this is not it. This is the beginning of a journey...a journey to find out who you really are in God's eyes. Why we do the things we do. And how scripture can ALWAYS point us in the right direction. Lysa's insight into scripture is very revealing and refreshing. Blessings to you as you open this amazing tool for the beginning of the rest of your life!

An interesting read
By LMS
This is not your typical diet. There are no quick fixes or easy answers to be found. Instead, Lysa Terkuerst takes a different tack. She talks about craving. She states (and I agree) that we were made to crave. The problem isn't with craving itself, but rather WHAT we crave. She is also very transparent about her own struggles with excess weight and low self-esteem. She doesn't claim to have all the answers and admits she still struggles. Lysa has a lot of good things to share. I agree that when it comes to losing weight, the biggest issue isn't knowing what to do. There are countless diet books to guide you. However, I know for me, the biggest issue is the want to. I would rather have quick fix. Pop a pill or try this diet. I want the benefits of losing weight without the discipline and hard-work it takes to make that a reality. Lysa discusses that topic in depth in the book. That and her discussion of emotional eating are two of this book's biggest strengths.

I like that Lysa points out that being overweight is more than just a physical battle and issue. It's a mental, emotional, and spiritual issue as well. I think that this is an element that is missing in many diet books. Lysa will hit you where it hurts and raise issues you may not want to think about.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention a couple of problems with this book as well. The diet that Lysa used to lose the excess weight is one that is extremely restrictive. No sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, corn, or pasta. I'm just not convinced that such a restrictive diet is healthy or sustainable long-term. I believe it is possible to get portions under control without such a restrictive diet. She is quick to suggest that such a restrictive diet isn't right for everyone. But it's the only diet discussed in the book. She fails to discuss less restrictive options. I know myself too well. I would never be able to completely cut sugar and starch out of my diet. I don't think I could maintain a diet like that short-term, much less for the rest of my life.

I also found it frustrating that Lysa is very rigid and legalistic about having something she is craving, such as a sweet, a baked good, or dessert. She makes a sound like a person who is trying to lose weight should never ever, have things like that again. It seems to me like she fails to see the difference between having one brownie, once in a while, and eating the entire pan in one sitting. . She trusts God to help her overcome her cravings and temptations, so why can't she employ the same faith and trust here? In my opinion, a lot of the problem isn't in WHAT we eat, but rather in how much. Lysa doesn't even discuss eating in moderation, and I wonder why. Even so-called healthy foods can cause you to gain weight if you eat too much of them. Calories are calories.

Overall, this is a good book, and I would highly recommend it. Lysa does have a lot of good and thought-provoking things to say.

Made to Crave Participant's Guide - leads to great self-discovery and great group discussions
By Amazon Customer
I've had the pleasure of leading 12 women in my church through this book and it's accompanying DVD & participant's manuals. We have two sessions left. Lysa's materials are definitely thought provoking, challenging, and empowering!! While not a diet plan, this book will help you conquer whatever thing in your life, whether food or not, that you turn to in times of stress, boredom, in need of comfort, etc. instead of turning to God first. The journey that the 13 of us are on has been wonderful. We are discussing going right through it a second time because there is so much to digest (no pun intended!). Lysa helps you accept who you are, but doesn't let you settle there. She reminds you that you were made to crave God. You have that same power in you that raised Jesus from the dead. You have the power to say "no" to anything that gets in the way of your relationship with Jesus Christ. We love being "Jesus girls" and we love Lysa's girlfriend style approach to teaching us how to be the best "Jesus girls" we can be!

I will also tell you, that as a women's ministry co-director and Bible study facilitator, I was hesitant to do this particular study. I thought it wouldn't be enough Bible for a "Bible study". Lysa does a wonderful job taking us throughout God's word.

Did possessing and killing amount to the same thing deep within the dark recesses of the human beast?

La Bete humaine (1890), is one of Zola's most violent and explicit works. On one level a tale of murder, passion and possession, it is also a compassionate study of individuals derailed by atavistic forces beyond their control.

Zola considered this his `most finely worked' novel, and in it he powerfully evokes life at the end of the Second Empire in France, where society seemed to be hurtling into the future like the new locomotives and railways it was building. While expressing the hope that human nature evolves through education and gradually frees itself of the burden of inherited evil, he is constantly reminding us that under the veneer of technological progress there remains, always, the beast within.

This new translation captures Zola's fast-paced yet deliberately dispassionate style, while the introduction and detailed notes place the novel in its social, historical, and literary context.
ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Worth the while.
By Angry Mofo
Initially, I gave La Bete Humaine five stars, but after some thought downgraded it to four. It's quite good, and in parts downright spectacular, but in all honesty it doesn't rank on the same level as the monolithic L'Assommoir, Germinal and Nana. The problem lies with the premise. In the three aforementioned novels, the characters were all basically ordinary people. This made it easy to be pulled into their emotional struggles, and made for unspeakably captivating reading because it was so easy to see how _real_ and _human_ they were. I stood behind L'Assommoir's Gervaise all the way, _literally loudly yelling_ as I accompanied her to L'Assommoir's inevitable conclusion.
I did not have the same reaction in La Bete Humaine. The protagonist is an "ordinary person," except he's afflicted with a mental disorder that makes him want to kill women. And thus, all his character development works to develop that one unfortunate aspect of his personality. I could not get inside his head. I could not see reality in his emotional struggle. To be frank, his moral dilemmas seemed very much invented by Zola, as opposed to taken from life. Admittedly, they were very elaborate inventions and _still_ made for captivating reading - that's why I'm still giving it four stars. Gervaise is a real character. Jacques Lantier is a writer's invention.
I would, however, deem it necessary for you to read La Bete Humaine, if only for one scene - the train wreck. That is one of Zola's most powerful scenes ever. It is really quite amazing. As I read, I saw and heard it happen, and I rallied behind the people that courageously stood up to the catastrophe just like I rallied behind Gervaise in L'Assommoir. It needs to be read to be believed. But the rest, I'm not too thrilled with in the end, and I didn't walk away carrying an image of any character from the book in my brain for days like I did after reading L'Assommoir, Germinal and Nana. So four stars it is. La Bete Humaine is a worthy member of the Rougon-Macquart series, and deserving of your time, but falls just short of greatness.

The runaway train on a one-way trip to nowhere
By A Customer
One of Zola's best and most famous works. There is something strangely fascinating about a murder where the killer escapes detection and punishment only to receive terminal treatment from another, totally unexpected source. When this happens twice in the same book, along with some tales of child abuse, a high-level cover-up, a sabotage attempt on a train in which virtually everyone is killed in the carnage except the persons targeted, a suicide, plus some assorted couplings outside of the marshalling yards, things get really interesting. What makes people commit such crimes? Here Zola really shows his skill in explaining his characters' motives and the dark, primeval forces that drive them. A pulsating, chilling story from beginning to end, full of unexpected twists, starting with the creation of a previously unknown member of the Macquart family as the novel's main character. Highly recommended for long train or air journeys.

Murder and lust on 19th century railways
By Nijik Sonata
A gripping story of murder and lust, of the dark side of human nature -- of the beast within. The most brilliant aspects of the novel are Zola's descriptions of trains and railways on the Paris-Le Havre line, around which all action from murder to love to jealousy to a magnificently described train wreck commences. The protagonist is a young engine driver Jacques Lantier in the 1870s, son of Gervaise (depicted in _L'Assommoir_) and half-brother of Nana. Jacques is never mentioned in the earlier novels as Zola only invented him later for a clear purpose in _La Bete Humaine_.
Jacques unfortunately is the most flagrant blemish of this novel. He is an obvious literary invention, an over-simplification, and perhaps some of the other characters too are simplified to a slightly lesser extent, but Jacques' tormented character is clearly psychologically unsustainable and more of a theoretical strawman than a fully developed individual. In contrast with _Germinal_, _Nana_, and _L'Assommoir_, this sacrifice of reality for tendency is also why _La Bete Humaine_ ends up lacking in the realistic depth of the mentioned novels. Some plot twists only add to the sense of lessened realism, especially when everything takes place in about a year's time, and it all takes away some of the sting of Zola's criticism of the powers that be. Nonetheless, _La Bete Humaine_, in its depiction of primeval murderous traits hiding underneath the educated sheen of modern 19th century society, buried deep in the thunderous rumble of railways, resonates in the recesses of human mind with its sinister tragedy.
Oxford World's Classics series version is the latest English translation of the novel. Zola's colloquialisms are rendered here well in a suitably colloquial English tone, although there are a couple of "blimeys", which are English enough to appear bizarre in a French novel, translation or not. 3 stars for the meat of the book: trains and railways.

Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening, by David Hendy

What if history had a sound track? What would it tell us about ourselves? Based on a thirty-part BBC Radio series and podcast, Noise explores the human dramas that have revolved around sound at various points in the last 100,000 years, allowing us to think in fresh ways about the meaning of our collective past.

Though we might see ourselves inhabiting a visual world, our lives have always been hugely influenced by our need to hear and be heard. To tell the story of sound—music and speech, but also echoes, chanting, drumbeats, bells, thunder, gunfire, the noise of crowds, the rumbles of the human body, laughter, silence, conversations, mechanical sounds, noisy neighbors, musical recordings, and radio—is to explain how we learned to overcome our fears about the natural world, perhaps even to control it; how we learned to communicate with, understand, and live alongside our fellow beings; how we've fought with one another for dominance; how we've sought to find privacy in an increasingly noisy world; and how we've struggled with our emotions and our sanity.

Oratory in ancient Rome was important not just for the words spoken but for the sounds made—the tone, the cadence, the pitch of the voice—how that voice might have been transformed by the environment in which it was heard and how the audience might have responded to it. For the Native American tribes first encountering the European colonists, to lose one's voice was to lose oneself. In order to dominate the Native Americans, European colonists went to great effort to silence them, to replace their "demonic" "roars" with the more familiar "bugles, speaking trumpets, and gongs."

Breaking up the history of sound into prehistoric noise, the age of oratory, the sounds of religion, the sounds of power and revolt, the rise of machines, and what he calls our "amplified age," Hendy teases out continuities and breaches in our long relationship with sound in order to bring new meaning to the human story.

Not much of a noise
By toronto
This is an ok book, but nothing special. It is based on a British Radio Four series, which may have been more interesting. There are a number of interesting anecdotes and facts, but overall it is quite superficial. There is nothing here about animals or the natural world, only humans. It isn't really about "sound" versus "noise", or foundational discussions of the nature of sound, hearing, etc. -- chapters are more or less catch alls about topics like rhetoric in the ancient world, songs of the French Revolution, the back staircases in the Old Town of Edinburgh, etc. Sound is an excuse to discuss these topics. The most interesting chapters are the first and second about prehistoric humans and cave sounds and burial sites (the echoes as spirit evokers). The last chapters are, as one might expect, on the increases in noise in the modern era, but there is really nothing about (for instance) Murray Schafer's views on low and hi fi or Marshall Mcluhan/Edmund Carpenter on changes in acoustic space. He does mention Bernie Krause's work.

The author actually doesn't seem to mind the proliferation of noise/sound all that much: he has a vague exhortation in the conclusion to us to stop being elitist, stop hiding out in quiet places, put down our reading (not including his book, I guess), and listen to the iPod of the person driving us crazy beside us on the bus or to the blasts from the rooms of the annoying neighbour next door -- our problem (according to him) is not that the world is getting too noisy, but that we are prejudiced against uncontrolled sounds bleeding into our ears from all around us. I'm not making this up.

Anyway, every once in a while there is just an error (the index has problems, e.g. the not very interesting reference to John Cage is misindexed); and in one place there is a discussion of the confessional in the middle ages, when it is reasonably well known that the confessional as we know it is a 16th century invention.

The book is well written, amusing in spots, but overall disappointing.

A gift for persons (like me) with little understanding of the importance of hearing and listening
By Walter E. Workman
I ordered this looking for help in dealing with age related hearing loss and listening imparement. WOW! I started reading when it arrived and could not put it down. A page turner, filled with wonderful research and history, and insights about "noise" that never occured to me. I'm giving copies of this to a number of close friends as Christmas Gifts!

The history of noise, the anthropology of ghosts and other illusive things
By VampireCowboy
Writing about the history of noise is like mapping the afterlife or studying the anthropology of ghosts, entirely speculative and seeking to impose a sense of order on the random, and a sense of the physical on the purely ethereal. It is also entirely dependent upon how one chooses to define noise. To me, noise seems unintentional, a byproduct; the author uses a much broader definition that includes intentional noise-making such as music, chanting, prayer, church bells and more. As such, the book might more aptly be called “Sound.”

That broad-brush approach coupled with a narrow (but fascinating) field of examples to illustrate our shared experience with noise may explain my mixed response to the book. I enjoyed it, but it was not at all what I expected, which was an exploration of how we define, process and interact with noise, possibly with neurologic and biologic insights into how it shapes individual and social responses. Instead, the book takes more of a generalist approach, with the author discussing various stages in social evolution and how those humans might have experienced and interacted with certain sounds, and the power dynamics of those who generate noise, those who receive it, and efforts to control both sides of that equation.

It’s an interesting, but understandably subjective approach that moves from the earliest days of pre-literate society, through the Industrial Revolution and ends in the current era of earbuds and YouTube and constant stimulation. It’s filled with some truly memorable moments of discovery (such as how Neolithic paintings in caves occur the most in areas with the highest sonic interest, for example), but the heavy reliance on “surely,” “perhaps,” “maybe” and “it’s likely,” made it maddeningly speculative.

Still, he is a talented writer and a topnotch historian. I was struck most by the care he brought to the epilogue in sections such as this: “If noise is, as most definitions would have it, an ‘unwanted’ sound, then to understand its impact on lived experience properly, we need to work out who exactly considered a given sound as wanted and who exactly considered it unwanted in any particular time and place – and why … the answer to these questions seems to keep coming back to a potent mix of three interwoven things: power, control and anxiety.

That’s a powerful thesis introduced only at the end and I would have loved to have seen this more explicitly "sounded" out from the beginning. Still, I enjoyed the read and even purchased a Tibetan singing bowl after reading the section about the religious application of sounds, specifically bells, to experience it firsthand.
