About the Author

France Winddance Twine is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is an ethnographer, a critical race theorist, and a documentary filmmaker who earned her degree at the University of California, Berkeley. She has published more than 60 books, journal articles, book reviews, and essays. She is the author and an editor of eight books, including Geographies of Privilege (forthcoming, 2013), A White Side of Black Britain: Interracial Intimacy and Racial Literacy (2010), Outsourcing the Womb: Race, Class, and Gestational Surrogacy in a Global Market (Routledge, 2011), Retheorizing Race and Whiteness in the 21st Century (with Charles Gallagher, Routledge, 2011), and Feminism and Antiracism: International Struggles for Justice (New York University Press, 2000). She has served as deputy editor of American Sociological Review, the official journal of the American Sociological Association. Twine currently serves on the international editorial boards of the journals Ethnic and Racial Studies, Sociology, the official journal of the British Sociological Association, and Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power.

Timely analysis!

France Winddance Twine has brought her many years of keen social analysis and insight into racism and critical race theory to a timely reading of guns and women. More than most analyses of women and firearms, this book is feminist at its core, and continually sets recent and long ago events into nuanced historical contexts, from its take on Patti Hearst's kidknapping and subsequent "turn" to joining her kidknappers in the armed robbing banks, to the reactions of the West to Jessica Lynch's capture as a POW in Iraq. Rather than work with received notions of gender, race, and class, Twine emphasizes how women negotiate and perform femininity and feminism with and through arms, though not always, as the saying goes, under circumstances of their own choosing.

Of interest to a journalist like myself is the language of the times which was more florid than modern styles, but it was clear that the readers felt well served by the news, for good or ill. About the Author
Donagh Bracken edited and arranged for publication the American Civil War Historycope Series,a visualization of the 384 major battles of the Civil War as determined by the Civil War Sites Preservation Committee authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1993. The Series was designed for advanced classroom study. He is a writer of long standing, having written for major newspapers and trade magazines on subjects such as history, economics and government. He is a graduate of Manhattan College.

Will appeal to many

The old axiom, "History is written by the winners," is essentially rejected in Donagh Bracken's new book, The Words of War. Bracken compares the Civil War battle reportage of the New York Times and the Charleston Mercury, juxtaposing the articles back to back. The result is a clear demonstration that history, at least during the many battles of the Civil War, is simply written by those who happened to be there.

In his introduction to the book, Bracken writes, "When the Civil War started, American journalism was put to the test. It was the start of the modern age of journalism, and it was a rough start indeed." The formative years of American journalism saw newspapers operated almost exclusively as propaganda organs, owned by some political person or party and used primarily to persuade the public for one cause or another. But when the Civil War came along, the very purpose of newspapers changed.

The public wanted information that was current, demanding up-to-date reportage of events that took place hundreds and thousands of miles away. Newspaper editors switched the focus of their papers' content from propaganda to covering the facts of battle, the "who-what-when and where" of it all. While the papers in the North and South always had different takes as to the "why" element of battle reportage, they still had to meet the chief demand of their reading public: that they get the facts, preferably as soon as possible. The new telegraph technology allowed for current reportage, and for the first time in the history of warfare, correspondents provided stories in a timely fashion.

New York was the newspaper capital of the country when war broke out, boasting 17 dailies. Many were pro-South and only five of them supported President Abraham Lincoln. Bracken focuses on one of those five, the New York Times, and its considerably talented editor Henry J. Raymond. Long interested in politics and journalism, Raymond was a principal founder of the New York Times in 1851 and also helped create the Republican Party after he left the Whigs in 1856.

In contrast, Bracken presents the firebrand editor of the Charleston Mercury, Robert Barnwell Rhett. Under the wonderful pseudonym "Hermes," Rhett penned the editorials that would lead South Carolina to be the first state to secede on Dec. 20, 1860. "He was quick of mind, brash and self-confident," writes Bracken, "and of the latter, annoyingly so to some." Rhett had considerable editorial influence over the Charleston Mercury, which was owned by Rhett's family.

Bracken is described on the book jacket as "...a writer of long standing having written extensively for newspapers and magazines for thirty years on subjects ranging from world history to economics." His familiarity with the Civil War subject matter is obvious in The Words of War and his approach to writing the book is organized and efficient.

Each chapter presents a battle, beginning with an author's commentary that sets the context. Then Bracken prints verbatim and unaltered the articles from the Charleston Mercury and then the articles from the New York Times that covered the battle. Sometimes maps, drawings and paintings are reprinted. Bracken then concludes each chapter with a section called "What Historians Say," usually a few paragraphs that cut the facts about the battle down to the barest of bones.

The most interesting portions of the book are found in the sections where actual dispatches and communications between the armies were published in the papers. For example, Bracken presents the fascinating exchange between Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner during the battle at Fort Donelson early in 1862, as printed in the New York Times. Buckner sent Grant a dispatch proposing that a group of commissioners be appointed to determine terms of surrender. Grant responds:

Sir: Yours, of this date, proposing an armistice and the appointment of Commissioners to settle the terms of capitulation is just received. No terms except unconditional surrender and immediate surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately upon your works. I am very respectfully, your obedient servant.

Thus we learn how the famous nickname, Unconditional Surrender Grant, was created. The exchanges and notes between opposing commanders add a great deal of interest to Bracken's book.

The Words of War will appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Civil War buffs, journalists and history students will find a great deal of value in the book. The book is so well organized that the reader does not have to go through the entire book in one sitting; he can peruse this chapter or that chapter, go to whichever battles he finds most interesting, and not lose any of the overall context. The book reads easily and provides information and perspective that even the most diehard of Civil War buffs will find new and enlightening. Bracken's effort is a solid one.

An inherently fascinating, impressively informative, enthusiastically recommended contribution

Beginning with the firing on Fort Sumpter and concluding with the Appomattox surrender of General Lee to General Grant four years later, "The Words Of War" is a unique and seminal contribution to the American Civil War literature. What author and Civil War historian Donagh Bracken has done is to compile and organize in chronological sequence the reports by newspaper correspondents from both the North and the South with respect to how the journalists wrote about the war for their newspapers back home. Specifically, the reporters for 'The New York Times' like Franc Wilkie, L.L. Crounse and others who were embedded with the northern Armies of Grant, Sherman, McClellan, and other officers and admirals in the Eastern and Western Theatres; and the reporters for such southern newspapers like the 'Charleston Mercury' like Robert Barnwell Rhett Sr. & Jr. and George William Bagy (under the pen name of Hermes). The northern and southern newspaper accounts are placed in juxtaposition with each other making for an inherently fascinating, impressively informative, enthusiastically recommended contribution to personal, academic, and community library Civil War Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

A perfect study for the times in which we live

There's nothing new here, but a lot we need to be reminded of as we "do church" in American culture in the 21st century. Andy Stanley takes us back to the early church, not to create a to-do list, but to see how and why the early Christians were so successful that they changed the world. This is a great study for small groups, but I would recommend that you watch the whole messages instead of the small-group curriculum. You'll be better able to put things into their proper context.

Don't settle for being just a Christian

This book/study is powerful. Not to be approached lightly. If you're just doing the bare minimum, sliding by as a Christian, this will make you uncomfortable. The study pushes where all of us need pushing I suspect - to become better disciples of Christ, and to not just be Christians in the general sense. We used this as a small group study in my church with adults and in another group with High School students and both groups were 100% in their responses that it is well worth your time and that it was quite challenging. I love Andy Stanley's ability to clearly get to the single big idea and then present it in ways that are memorable and meaningful. He's a master communicator, and really shines in this series.

Small group study book

First encounter with Andy Stanley and my wife and I love it so far. We are watching the DVD along with the study. The DVD is better than the book. The book asks simple, redundant questions but does have some helpful content that isn't in the accompanying DVD. The DVD is awesome and I'd encourage people to only buy the two together.

About the Author
Randy L. Joyner is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education, of East Carolina University. He teaches two of the four research courses required for the doctorate. His current research interest is the assessment of strategies for deliver­ ing doctoral instruction. He has received several awards for his research: the Delta Pi Epsilon doctoral research award; the Omicron Tau Theta Iota Chapter Research Award; and the Delta Pi Epsilon Alpha Chapter Research Award. The results of his research have been published in national and international journals.

Dr. Allan A. Glatthorn (deceased) was a Distinguished Research Professor of Education (Emeritus) at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina.

Maybe not for your field of study.

I found this book to be less than helpful as a student of History. The research methods described in the book are geared towards a masters/doctoral degree in education, and while I see where the methods described would be helpful in sociology, psychology or perhaps poli-sci, I found it ignored the issues of a thesis that will depend almost entirely on research in a library and less with surveys and tests. Really, how does one test Gettysburg or Agincourt?

Convinced he was the Elijah Messiah, the Spanish peasant Bartolomé
Sánchez believed that God had sent him in divine retribution for the crimes committed by
the Inquisition and the Church. Sánchez's vocal and intolerable religious deviance quickly
landed him in the very court he believed he was sent to destroy. Fortunately for him, the first
inquisitor assigned to his case came to believe that Sánchez was not guilty by virtue of
insanity, and tried to collect the proof that would save his life.

For seven
years, Sánchez shuttled between jails, hospitals, and his home village while his fate hung
in the balance. Nalle convincingly evokes the compassion of Sánchez's first inquisitor,
Pedro Cortes, as he struggled to save his prisoner's life, and argues that the Spanish, compared
to other Europeans of the day, were remarkably rational and humane when dealing with the
mentally ill.

What a pleasure to read a book that is so well prepared and has such an engaging story to tell! Mad for God is exceptionally clear, readable, original, and substantial. Nalle interests us in the story of a man with what for his time and place were crazy ideas about God and Catholicism, and in the process teaches us much about sixteenth-century Spanish Catholicism, the Inquisition, contemporary ideas about madness, and the social control of speech and dissenters.

Mad for God is microhistory at its best, and it succeeds on multiple levels: it is a riveting narrative that has much to reveal to specialists and amateurs alike, and it is the first study to bring this case to light. The Spanish Inquisition evokes an image of inquisitors bringing innocent people to trial, rendering them guilty of heresy and burning them at the stake. Torture, confessions made under duress, and the murder of large numbers of Protestants are visualized. Inquisitors and their informants were everywhere, and watched everything. These perceptions of the Spanish Inquisition have come from numerous sources, including books, articles, movies, and are ingrained in many people's view of the Inquisition. The question raised, then, is how historically accurate are these portrayals? Was this the way thing were always done, or is there another side to the story?
While not attempting to take on the challenge of the Spanish Inquisition in its entirety, Sara Nalle presents us with a very different picture of the Inquisition and the inquisitors than are normally seen in the literature. Nalle introduces us to Bartolomé Sánchez, a man who condemned the Catholic Church, the priesthood, the Holy Trinity, and then announcing that he was the second savior, sent to finish Christ's work. Sánchez was taken before the Inquisitor, Cortes for trial.
Cortes is atypical of the traditional view of the inquisitors as bloodthirsty men driven to exterminate those who did not profess the beliefs of the Catholic Church. Sánchez's claim that the Holy Spirit was not part of the Trinity, but that rather Mary was, certainly disturbed Cortes. Sánchez also refused to show deference to the cross, which he stated was evil, because it was a tool of those that killed Christ. Yet, through all of those things, Cortes, the inquisitor, sought a way for Sánchez to escape a death sentence.
Nalle constructed Mad for God from the trial records of Sánchez, and therefore she derived the account from the official records of the Inquisition's offices. While the possibility exists that there were omissions, the record appears to give a balanced view of the events that transpired in the courtroom.
This is very well written book, that sheds some light on the Spanish Inquisition, and provides a different view than is often seen in books and movies. It is easy to read, very well noted, and you may very well finish it in only one or two sittings.

About the Author

Lucy Soutter is a photographer, critic and art historian. She is a tutor in the Department of Critical and Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art. Her writings on contemporary art and photography include essays in Girls! Girls! Girls! in Contemporary Art (Intellect, 2011), Appropriation (Whitechapel Gallery, 2009) and Role Models: Feminine Identity in Contemporary Photography (Scala, 2008).

Very important book for photography students and everyone who loves photography. It is very well written, clear and approachable.
I read it twice already and I keep coming back to this book. I recommended it to all my colleagues and friends from the field.

Art photography coming of age

This is a must read for all fine art photographs, specially does doing experimental contemporary "new Photography". I have read it twice already. Gives an excellent historic perspective. I believe that photography, besides its journalistic endeavor, is finally coming of age with art photography.
