He had a distinguished and highly decorated career despite the pain he endured to appear normal. He served on board destroyers, a battleship, two aircraft carriers and functioned as an administrator for a Seal unit. The outside world also impacted on him further aggravating his CP when he was challenged by alcoholism and excessive grief caused by the suicide of a brother. Review
br >For a personal story of triumph over cerebral palsy, John W. Quinn has written "Someone Like Me" ($16.96, History Publishing Company). Despite having been born with cerebral palsy, John wanted to be in the U.S. Navy, but the Navy didn't want him. Even though every step he took was measured in pain, the Navy requirement for a "duck walk" initially disqualified him. He never made mention of his CP. Instead he put himself into a regimen of self-applied physical therapy for a year until he could fulfill the requirement. It meant learning to deal with a new level of pain and it led to a twenty-year career in the Navy! He retired as a senior chief petty officer and earned numerous citations and awards. This is not the story of an easy life at any point along the way, but it is one of great determination that can serve as an inspiration to those born with CP and anyone else inclined to feel sorry for themselves. --Bookvues.com June, --Arizona Daily Star, August 1, 2010

When someone says you can't do something, the natural human response is defiance. "Someone Like Me: An Unlikely Story of Challenge and Triumph Over Cerebral Palsy" tells the story of John W. Quinn, and how for decades he hid his condition and rose through the ranks of the US Navy. Born with cerebral palsy, no one expected him to achieve officer rank in the Navy. "Someone Like Me" is a fascinating and uplifting story, very highly recommended. --Midwest Book Review,

"Someone Like Me will serve as an inspiration to a lot of people, not only those with CP, but just ordinary folks who want to read about someone who overcame adversity and succeeded in a most amazing way."

"Mighty Quinn"...well, that's what we called him...and still do...and I don't believe Bob Dylan would mind... His story is uncommonly unique and unquestionably inspirational, leaving readers no choice but to confirm that he is indeed...Mighty Quinn."

- Chris F. Jewett, Captain, United States Navy, Retired

"This book is a must for every physician, therapist, and other caregiver that treats individuals with cerebral palsy or any other disability. It also is a must for every young person who ever looked at a goal and thought it was just out of reach. Perhaps he or she should look again."

An Inspirational Story
By Philip Freeman
I know it may not be fair for me to rate this book. After all, John and I have been friends since middle school. I have told John's story many times to my students as a way to show them that they can overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. John now tells his story in "Someone Like Me." I can attest to the fact that this book is an honest portrayal of the most incredible person I have ever known. I am sure that you will find his story inspirational.

Review of "Someone Like Me" by someone who has C.P.
By Carolyn Bowman
In a recent talk at a conference, I heard John Quinn say that this is not a book about the military, it is not about having Cerebral Palsy, and it is not about alcoholism. There are certainly elements of all of these throughout the book, but that is not what this book is about. John's book is first and foremost about the tenacity of the human spirit, and the will to never give up no matter what the odds. I found that there can still be dignity in losing every wrestling match he ever entered, 0-79, and still walking away a winner. It is about not being able to do the duck walk, practicing every day for a year, and coming back to pursue his chosen career. One thing that impressed me is that John didn't always know what he was getting into--but once he committed himself to a course of action, he followed through no matter how overwhelming things got for him. No doubt it helped to have parents who stood by him (particularly a father who didn't allow him to walk away from anything) and a large supportive family, but he was able to look past that and find strength in himself when his family was not always available.
As an individual who was also born with mild Cerebral Palsy, I could relate with much of what John said in this book. I could empathize with the physical, social and emotional challenges he described. I wondered afterwards if I would have done as well in the military, although I found my own challenges in academia. But what I could really relate to was not giving up. I've had my own considerable challenges in life, but the spirit is the same--never give up, and once you start something, you finish it no matter how hard it becomes.
Life is about making healthy choices, and following through on those decisions. It's surprising how many people don't grasp this concept, but John has it down cold. I know what it's like to drag my feet behind me, but what I appreciated was how he managed to get through boot camp with a broken foot. I've also had doors lock in front of me when I show up for a date, but I gained something from his insight into the experience. John made some bad decisions with his life, but I could relate to his commitment to turning his life around. He made some difficult choices, and learned to follow through once he started. He also made some good choices in finding the strength to do what he felt was right, and be able to say "yes" when everyone else told him "no". That is the real message of this book.
Perhaps the one thing I found lacking in his book was: "What next?" He says he doesn't know. After all he went through, I felt a bit disappointed by this. Life is about challenges, regardless of whether or not you have a disability. Perhaps more than anyone else I know, John thrives on challenges. When he finds what that next challenge is, I hope that it will become fodder for a sequel. I, for one, will be more than happy to read it when it comes out.

Much more than a Sea Story....
By Pete Clapham
At first glance, the cover with John in his Dress Whites would lead the reader to believe that this is a Sea Story of derring-do and exotic ports of call but in reality, it is a tale of personal determination and grit in a nautical setting. I am a retired Sailor who served with John and the revelations put forth in the book floored me to say the least. If John's performance was average or even mediocre under such trying circumstances, it would still be a significant accomplishment but John was indespensable to the ship and the crew was none the wiser to his trials and tribulations to perform at such a level. Administrative competence may not seem the stuff of John Wayne movies but it is essential if any military unit is to function effectively and John provided it in spades. He and I also shared the same Battle Station, directing repair crews in fighting fires and flooding in the event of battle damage. He made it look easy standing there in front of a three dimensional diagram of the ship with it's myriad of decks and compartments knowing exactly the extent of the damage, which valve or hatch had been closed and the location of the repair parties under extremely trying circumstances. In a contentious and uncertain day and age that is testing society as a whole, this book serves as a reminder to not take for granted and make the most of the full range of faculties provided at birth and to inspire and motivate those not so fortunate.
