Helpful Book for Blending Families

I might not have a Ph.D or specialize in anything other than being the best parent I can possibly be to my two children, as well as to my significant others three children, however I can tell you, this book is an excellent read.

Although tailored to the step or blended family, any parent would find much of the information useful.

Understanding birth order can seriously change how you parent, having a more positive impact on your children involved in the blending family. The whole saying "Everyone has a place in this world", will never ring more true, until you have taken the time to read Kevin Leman's books.

I have read over 20 other books geared towards step families, step mothers, blended families and this is the book I reach for constantly. It has made the biggest impact on our family, in an extremely positive way.

I highly recommend this book or any book by Kevin Leman for any blended family.

I am authoring someone elses book about Life in a Blender, and this provides excellent information about blended families. The book we are writing is about blended families in the Bible, and this gives great insight into the rule of some of their positions. Great stuff for my personal understanding too. Thanks.

Among the Better Books on This Topic

Current research continues to refute old myths: For example, the silly notion that there could be a "good divorce" which would "not affect the children much" in their development and maturity.

Modern science reveals otherwise. Study after study shows that children of divorce continue to be impacted by family trauma long after they become adults and form their own families. Trauma happens.

Kevin Leman's book is reasonably light-hearted yet means business. He gives practical, strategic help to those who experience divorce either as one of the parting partners, or as a child of same. This is not pop psychology; it is weighty and on-target advice.

This is one of the better books on this topic. For more help from a faith-based perspective, authors Ron Deal, and Dr. David and Lisa Frisbie, have books here on Amazon which are hugely helpful for stepfamilies.

After only watching the first session I was so reminded about what most Christians forget and that is the truth that the Holy Spirit, and all His fullness resides in side every believer. We are filled with the same power that rose Christ from the dead. As Christians we need to live in the power of the Spirit and walk in victory. My prayer is that God reveal this truth to all who watch and that God would empty us of our selves and our fleshly desires and fill us to overflowing with His Spirit!

This is not a book about getting closer to the Holy Spirit. It is really is just a book of questions, thus the name participants guide. I guess I'm going to have to purchase the cd's but I didn't want to spend that much money. Just know what you're getting. I'm just saying.

Rollercoaster of an adventure

What it's about: While holidaying in Noosa with her family, Georgia meets the Nik. He's gorgeous and he's loaded, but he has secrets to hide.

What I thought: I fell in love. With Nik. I just couldn't help it, and once you read this, you won't be able to help it too. Maybe it's his heart-breaking background, or the fact that he wants to date a normal girl, but it made me wish I was Georgia. Geogia meets Nik by chance while out running and from there begins her rollercoaster ride of an adventure. Nik tries to keep her at arms length, because he has secrets to hide, but he just can't resist her. Georgia can't understand why Nik would be interested in someone like her, but it doesn't take long before she is wrapped around his finger. This was such a typical teen romance, with a different setting, but it didn't make it any less exciting to read.
Go on, give it a try. I promise you'll fall in love with Nik too.

The Good: Georgia was super cute the whole way through, and quite rational despite it all. I would have thrown myself at Nik, no matter what!

The Bad: It just really seemed unrealistic. I mean, I know there are heir's to million dollar corporations out there, but really. No.

About the Author

Cathrine Kellison was a member of the Producers Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, the Independent Documentary Association, and won numerous industry awards, including two WGA awards for Outstanding Achievement. She passed away in 2009.

Dustin Morrow is a filmmaker, programmer, author, and Assistant Professor in the Film program at Portland State University. His short and feature films have won numerous awards and been screened in venues around the world. His photographs have been featured in art and culture magazines as well as solo and group gallery shows. He has directed theatrical productions, programmed film festivals and screening series, and written about film for publications in the U.S. and Europe.

Kacey Morrow is an Assistant Professor of New Media Design at Western Washington University, where she teaches motion graphics, digital video, and web and interactive design. Ms. Morrow has years of experience as a motion, print, and multimedia designer in Chicago, and her videos have appeared in several film festivals and exhibitions nation-wide.

As an actress turned producer for the year, I was able to get so much info out of this book. Not to mention that it specifically helped attribute specific advice for New Media projects. It is A LOT of info so it will take some time to get through. I wish I would've heard about this book when I first started the process, but it was still a huge asset to read during the production of our series. If you are a first time producer, I definitely recommend getting this book. There is so little info about producing online content as it is still very new and everyone is kind of finding their own way in this medium. It also has info on producing regular network/distributor content as well as New Media content so that is a definite plus! It includes sample contracts and other resources that will help you save a lot of time and get exactly what you need for your project! I Love it!!!

About the Author
Jane Haddam (b. 1951) is an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988). Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s most recent novels are Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

Fireworks and poison in Oyster Bay

Gregor Demarkian retired from the FBI as one of its highest-ranking administrators: chief of Behavioral Sciences, in charge of tracking down serial killers. A working lifetime spent in Washington merely honed his near-superstitious distrust of politicians. Nevertheless, a former colleague has asked Gregor to attend Senator Stephen Fox's Independence Day weekend 'seminar' in Oyster Bay, New York. Worrying things have been happening to the senator lately - but why?
No Washington insider takes Fox seriously; his political manager Dan Chester does things while Fox concentrates on his television performance, the one providing substance and the other image. They have a symbiotic relationship - Chester knows that he lacks the right image for media celebrity, and Fox knows that Chester has the brains. Fox isn't even smart enough to cheat on his wife discreetly; he met his current mistress, Patchen Rawls, through his wife's *mother*, Victoria Harte. (Janet Fox, for her part, never recovered from the death of her only child. Her only real interest is working with Down's Syndrome kids at the Emiliani school, a charity that doesn't fit in with Chester's grand schemes - it's too real and too religious.)
As a springboard to the Presidency, Fox is proposing the Act in Aid of Exceptional Children. While providing Fox with the public image of a saintly defender of mentally disabled children, behind the scenes the Act serves as a lever to pry funds and influence out of its real beneficiaries: organizations of health care workers. Fox's friend Dr. Kevin Debrett will benefit substantially no matter what, but the Empowerment Project, via lobbyist Claire Markey, also wants to get aboard. But when the Act was announced to the press, Stephen Fox collapsed, and has been doing so at speaking engagements ever since. After a battery of medical tests, Chester asked the FBI to look into the possibility that Fox is being sabotaged - so Gregor is to attend the seminar. Gregor, in turn, asked Bennis to accompany him as cover; with her looks and background, she's just the type of campaign contributor Fox would like, and Gregor can use an intelligent friend on this.
If the attacks are real and not some weird psychological symptom, how are they being staged, and what are they intended to accomplish?
Patchen, Fox's mistress, can't think her way out of a paper bag; she thinks it's Fox's destiny to leave Janet for her, and that only Chester is blocking her. Did she stage Fox's attacks as a foolish ploy to drive Chester away? (While she alone of the suspects has no clinic connections, she plays at Wicca, complete with a pharmacopoeia of herbal preparations.) Was Patchen the last straw for Janet - or for Victoria, Janet's mother? Did Claire Markey, despite her increasing dissatisfaction with her job and clients, realize that Chester planned to write the Act to include competency exams - despite all her lobbying to the contrary, and his acceptance of her funding? Or has the wayward senator found a new playmate? Or Chester, Debrett, or Fox could be up to something complex, either with Chester as mastermind or one of the others pulling an independent boneheaded play.
Naturally, Gregor and the Oyster Bay police find themselves with a murder on their hands before the fireworks begin.
The setting - Victoria Harte's Oyster Bay mansion - helps make this book memorable, and Great Expectations, in turn, is tied to its owner. Victoria Harte is 'the Last of the Movie Stars'; she travels with an entourage of twelve, gets involved with various liberal causes but isn't expected to stop wearing fur, and has an excellent spy system. Her chief concern is Janet, and how Janet is affected by Stephen Fox's shenanigans - which are in turn dictated by Dan Chester and Kevin Debrett, Stephen's closest friends, and by his mistress of the moment, rather than by any consideration for his wife.
One of the most interesting subplots is what's going on with Bennis Hannaford, one of the major supporting characters in the series. Bennis is falling apart for the second time in her life - her mother's MS will kill her before Labor Day, and with her death, the last of Bennis' childhood home will be gone. Two of her siblings are coming up for trial - one for insider trading, the other for murdering three other members of her family - and a third sibling is in rehabilitation. She's been coping by spending too much money and throwing herself into life on Cavanaugh Street, even though she lives in Boston and is working through the proofs of her next novel. She'd rather be *anywhere* than Philadelphia.
Even though during her *first* major crisis, years ago, she was involved with Stephen Fox.

Does this senator remind you of anyone?

Act of Darkness falls near the top of the second tier of Gregor Demarkian stories. As usual, the solution is found in the history we are given. Bennis's debutante youth and her status as a celebrity author are the perfect cover for inviting Gregor to investigate a murder before it happens. The mental chaos of celebrity and politics breaks the mirror of the characters' thoughts into a jumbled mosaic that masks the real story (and reflects the author's personal views, if her website is any indication). The principle corpse-to-be is Senator Stephen Whistler Fox, a flesh-and-bones marionette on the strings of a very skilled political manager whose ambition is to be the President behind the President. Readers can decide for themselves whether Fox represents anyone in the American political scene, but please remember that this book was written several administrations ago.

This is the third in the Gregor Demarkian mysteries, following on from "Not a Creature was Stirring" and "Precious Blood". The action is mainly set at a political seminar during a Fourth of July weekend where Gregor Demarkian has been asked to investigate why Stephen Whistler Fox, Senator and possible Presidential Candidate, keeps collapsing at public events. The weekend is supposed to be about the Act in Aid of Exceptional Children, but seems to be more about scoring points on many different levels. Gregor and Bennis (who we meet in the first book Not a Creature Was Stirring (The Gregor Demarkian Holiday Mysteries)) find a house full of people who harbour grudges against each other, including Fox's mother in law, "the last of the movie stars" Victoria Harte, his wife Janet who has never recovered from the death of her baby daughter, his mistress - the unstable Patchen Rawls, lobbyist Clare Markey and Stephen Fox's closest advisors from his University days; Dan Chester his political manager and Dr Kevin Debrett. In an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere, the scene is set for murder. Gregor already has a phobia about politicians and this weekend is not about to make his feelings change.

I love the Gregor Demarkian books and, although this is not perhaps the best in the series, it is a very good story, with a great cast of characters. My favourite is the vile Patchen Rawls, who is impervious to anybody but herself and who spends her time casting spells and spying at doors. If you wish to read on, the next book in the series is Quoth the Raven (The Gregor Demarkian Holiday Mysteries). All the books are capable of being read as stand alone stories, although you might prefer to read the first in the series before this one, as it introduces Bennis Hannaford and many of the characters from Demarkian's Armenian neighbourhood, who feature in most of the novels.

This is an older book, much of the information is basic and sometimes obsolete, due to the equipment now used and that hurricanes and time have changed some areas. I will look this book over and then put it away or sell it.

Great for Beginners!

I bought this book for my boyfriend, and he has just recently picked up Red Fishing (he mainly did Bass Fishing, but wanted to try some Saltwater fishing too). He pretty much learned everything on his own, and the book only confirmed what he was able to find out for himself, but he was happy to know he was going in the right direction. Also has some great recipes in there too!

Excellent book about redfish

I bought this book for my husband because redfish is one of his favorite fish to catch...but he had only been moderately successful. He said this book was wonderful and very informative...the best he's read on this subject. I should add that after he read it he went out and immediately caught two redfish; because I bought the book for him I think the credit should go to the book.

Swindall's concise biography is a great introduction to this iconic African American artist, athlete, and activist. Swindall (Sam Houston State Univ.) contextualizes Robeson's life within larger global, political, and racial spheres, stressing that "the African diaspora, its culture, people and politics, was at the heart of his artistic career and political activism." The author draws heavily on existing secondary sources, including biographies by Martin Duberman (Paul Robeson, 1989) and Paul Robeson Jr. (The Undiscovered Paul Robeson, CH, Sep'01, 39-0207), as well as from earlier works and primary sources, but does not footnote in a traditional academic way. This is problematic at times. Swindall relies heavily on the Daily Worker and other communist or communist-influenced publications, yet fails to identify this political affiliation. While Robeson was certainly the target of rabid political attacks and the mainstream media contributed to this pillorying, a more balanced primary and secondary form of documentation would have added to the work. However, Swindall aptly demonstrates Robeson's remarkable multifaceted career, including politics and his stage and field successes. The author does not shy away from Robeson's psychological problems in the final quarter of his life. Overall, a fine introduction to Robeson that stresses his life as a public figure. Swindall does not shy away from dealing with Robeson’s extramarital affairs, the tensions in his marriage with Eslanda Goode Robeson, and the disagreements that Eslanda and her son Paul Robeson Jr. had over Paul Senior’s psychological treatment. Lindsey R. Swindall earned her doctorate in Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and is a teaching assistant professor in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. She has also written: The Politics of Paul Robeson's Othello and The Path to the Greater, Freer, Truer World: Southern Civil Rights and Anticolonialism, 1937-1955. She is co-editor of American Appetites: A Documentary Reader.
