In this deftly written and researched account, he explains that because so many more soldiers survive their wounds today than did in Vietnam, they often suffer from multiple injuries requiring "poly-trauma units." Glasser describes how improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan and Iraq blow off limbs, wreak havoc on internal organs, and cause devastating concussive brain damage--the signature injuries of our new wars. Glasser points out that today's wars with new weapons, new injuries, and new treatments all add up to "new suffering" for soldiers. He also focuses on the "Band of Sisters" in the new wars whose major cause of PTSD once was sexual harassment and now is combat. The weight of Glasser's research is compelling. This is a very powerful book. I wish every politician in DC would read this book. As a non-combat vet I can tell you this is a must read.

Dr. Glasser should stick with what he knows: Medicine

I preface review by saying when Dr. Glasser writes on the details of TBI, mTBI, their long range effects, and their treatment, this book is good. However, that is not the majority of this book. The majority covers things of which he doesn't have experience (on the ground in a combat zone) and this book is full of numbers that don't add up and aren't cited.
The biggest problem is the large amount of numbers and statistics that are found throughout the book but rarely cited and don't always add up. Three examples of this are his statement that the KIA-WIA ratio in Vietnam was 2.4 however he then lists the KIA as 58,282 and the WIA as 350,000. This gives us a ratio of 6.0, undermining his argument. When speaking of C-17 military air ambulances flying out of Iraq and Afghanistan, he writes that 30,000 missions have been done evacuating 150,000 patients. However, only approximately 50,000 US have been KIA/WIA. Again, Dr. Glasser's numbers to not add up. The final example I am listing (but not final in book as there are too many to list here) is that by 1972, 1/3 of all helicopter pilots were KIA/WIA/medically discharged. Once again, this is a substantial number that is not cited.
Dr. Glasser also spends time talking about our current need for a draft and relates it to having women in combat. These are two separate issues and the discussion comes at a time when many women are fighting to be allowed into combat roles (which most male combat troops are against). He believes that if the draft were instituted, the national would be better represented. However, much of the nation (especially with our current obesity rates) are not fit for military duty and would not be allowed in. Having a draft would also mean that fewer are able to stay in long term as volunteers, sapping ourselves of their valuable experience. It also overlooks the feelings of many of us that if an individual doesn't want to be here (here being the Armed Services) then they should just get out. We only want those that are motivated and want to be a part of us. When speaking on women in combat, he believes that the lack of the draft is what's causing us to turn to women; however this is just not the case. All of these women are volunteers and as I mentioned before, many are trying to get into combat roles. He also greatly overstates the numbers of women in combat and the actual combat they face. According to DOD numbers and using only figures from Iraq for simplicity, there were 4,487 KIA and of those, only 104 were women. This means that the exposure of women to combat is much lower than Dr. Glasser would lead us to believe. Dr. Glasser states that the numbers of servicewomen is approaching 700 (for both wars) and this is clearly not the case. He says that the women's percentage of causalities is climbing towards 3%, but this again is clearly not the case.
There are many more examples of what was stated above, however; these listed examples should provide a substantial enough section to discourage anyone from buying this poorly written book.

An Interesting, Thoughtful, Original, Concise Book.

I really enjoyed Dr. Ron Glasser's, MD, latest book, "Broken Bodies, Shattered Minds", which flows nicely from his earlier works, "365 Days", and "Wounded". ("365 Days", a major book to come out of the Vietnam War, and "Wounded", which was written in the early period of the U.S. Iraq and Afghan Wars.) Dr. Glasser provides a very unique perspective as a military commentator, physician, and former Army Doctor who has treated many wounded soldiers from the Vietnam War.
His medical commentary greatly underscores his military observations, and makes the latter less abstract, and more meaningful. In the present era of our all volunteer, professional military, which is very much apart from mainstream American Society, it is very important for Americans to read a book like this which shows some of what is going on now in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, in our name and with our borrowed tax dollars, and shows some of the terrible mental and physical costs of these wars that are being borne by a small minority of our fellow citizens, who all too often remain in the shadows for most of us.
In my judgment too many of our political and military leaders have erred in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to counteract this Americans must become more engaged with, and aware of, our current war policy, and its consequences upon our society. A great way to start this process is by reading Ron Glasser's new book, "Broken Bodies, Shattered Minds", after which I'm sure you will want to read his earlier, "365 Days", and, "Wounded".
