About the Author
Les Galloway (1912‑1990), while still a teenager, shipped out to New Zealand as a seaman; a few years later he dropped out of college to enlist in the Bolivian army. For most of his life he was a commercial fisherman out of San Francisco. His stories were published in Esquire and Prairie Schooner.
Jerome Gold is a writer and the publisher of Black Heron Press. He lives in Seattle.

A Special Twist

Les Galloway tells a story of an inexperienced and greedy fisherman who goes out to sea for the first time in hopes of making a quick fortune. In The Forty Fathom Bank, the main character lives in San Francisco and hopes to catch as many sharks as he can before the sale prices of the sharks go back down. Finding an experienced partner to sail out with, the two fishermen head out to the forty fathom bank and attempt to catch as many sharks as they can. Out at sea, the two strangers do not really open up to each other. The fishermen work and catch sharks until they have a couple tons. But what happens when two complete strangers are stuck on a boat together as a storm is about to come and a buoy is lost?
A novella and an easy read, Galloway carefully explains emotions of trust and openness that strangers often feel towards each other. Even though the story is written in the first person narrative, you still get an idea of what each character is thinking. For example, the fisherman thought, "I sensed something not quite right, some shadow of suspicion in May's mind. All during breakfast I had the feeling he was watching me with those innocent green eyes of his, that possibly he was puzzled or curious or even disappointed" (Galloway, 80). This quote being said by the main character still allows you to feel what the other character is thinking. The author writes with a lot of detail and makes you feel as if you are in the main character's shoes.
I would suggest you to read this book if you enjoy short dramas. It is not exactly the drop everything and read type of book but it is a type of book that would make you wonder. Even though it was quite tedious in certain sections, a special twist in the ending made up for it. Overall I would recommend this book, because it is a story that someone would never forget about.

A Pleasant SHort Read for a Weekend at the Beach!

I usually do not read fiction, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The stories are short and very well written. I especially liked, "Where No Flowers Bloom", "The Albacore Fisherman", and "Death of a Hero"! Great read for a visit to the beach or seaside village.
