Intriguing well-plotted mystery

Jane Haddam has written a lot of excellent novels. Not a Creature was Stirring was the first Gregor Demarkian novel. If you haven't read it, seek it out. Most of her books revolve around holidays and most of them are set in a certain neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Down the middle of the neighborhood runs Cavanaugh Street.

Demarkian, a retired FBI agent, lives in an apartment on Cavanaugh Street. Several other people whose names end in -ian- live nearby. There are lots of characters in Haddam's books so you have to pay close attention. But that's good, because these delightful novels in which Haddam writes with such care and affection about this mostly Armenian-American enclave will amply reward the reader. You get a cracking good murder mystery in the bargain, along with crisp writing about vivid entertaining characters and bouncing action.

As one might expect, Bleeding Hearts is set in February, which can be a miserable month in Philadelphia, weather-wise, right around Saint Valentine's Day. What happens at the party thrown by Hannah Kerkorian, however, is anything but saintly. Her new love--and understand that Hannah is no spring chicken--is Paul Hazzard. The year before Hazzard was a suspect accused of murdering his wife. That crime is still unsolved. On the eve of the party, the neighborhood is all a-twitter because Paul's ex-mistress is rumored to be writing a tell-all book which might reveal something about the murder of Paul's dead wife. So, who shows up at the party with a legitimate invitation? None other than the ex-mistress. So they're all there when Paul gets bumped off. Who invited her and why are integral to this intriguing mystery.

It's enough to drive Father Kasparian, Gregor Demarkian, Lida Arkmanian, and old George Tekemanian over the edge! In the end, of course, Gregor sorts it all out for the Philadelphia police and for the neighborhood, solving two murders in the bargain.
This is a very entertaining and satisfying crime novel.

A bit wordy but still has that Haddam nice effect. Wish Haddam would do more with her
core characters. They're much more interesting than some of the surrounding characters
they meet in each situation.

Almost everyone on Cavanaugh Street seems to be getting into the spirit of Valentine's Day. Bennis' brother Christopher drops in for a visit, and begins a relationship with Lida, and even Hannah Krekorian has a new boyfriend...a once-popular figure in the 'recovery' movement whose wife died under mysterious circumstances.

Should be read after NOT A CREATURE WAS STIRRING, which introduces Christopher and his gambling problem. By this point in the series, Chris has been to "Camp Boredom" (which was run by Hannah's boyfriend) and has his life straightened out.

Haddam takes on the 'recovery' movement in this volume. As Chris and Bennis put it in NOT A CREATURE WAS STIRRING:
C: I don't think I'm crazy because I've got Daddy's genes, and I don't think I'm crazy because Daddy warped my mind, either. I think I'm crazy because I'm a jerk.
B: I don't think that kind of attitude is going to get us anywhere.
C: I think it's going to get us a hell of a lot farther than the attitude I've been taking, which is that I just can't help myself, no explanations necessary.

Belgians in other parts of Michigan as well. I am glad that I read the book, but I would have loved

Murder for Mother's Day

To get the most out of this, you should first read, at a minimum: _Not a Creature Was Stirring_ (introduces Gregor), _Precious Blood_ (introduces the Sisters of Divine Grace), and _A Great Day for the Deadly_ (a murder at their motherhouse). If you start with _Murder Superior_, you'll eliminate some suspects in the earlier cases.
Mother's Day on Cavanaugh Street is like the festival of a particularly fanatical cult :). Mother's Day in the convent focuses on Mary, the Mother of God. (Gregor sees children's artwork to that effect so much in this case, he feels like saying a novena, and he's Armenian Orthodox.)
The Sisters of Divine Grace are having a convention in Philadelphia, and Sisters are arriving from all over the world, including: Reverend Mother General and Sister Scholastica (of course), Sister Joan Esther from Alaska, Mother Andrew Loretta from Japan.
All of them loathe Mary Bellarmine, Mother Superior of the Southwestern Province. She's a middle-aged woman without a real vocation, who entered the order as a career. She's fantastic at funding and organizing building projects (e.g. new gymnasiums), and lousy at handling people. (Joan Esther requested a transfer to Alaska in the first place to get away from her.)
But when Gregor arrives to deliver his speech "Investigating the Catholic Murder", the woman who falls dead into his arms isn't Mary Bellarmine, but a nun everybody *liked*, who may have eaten something intended for Mary Bellarmine. And the chief investigating officer this time is an incompetent with political connections, who wants to make a big splash in the press without any unofficial consultants around. But when Reverend Mother General says jump, even the Archbishop of Philadelphia (who she taught in the 8th grade) says, how high? So Gregor's in for it, like it or not.
Interesting characters: nuns with personality (formidable nuns, cheerful young nuns; some read novels or sing Madonna lyrics while working); a radio talk-show host who specializes in offensive commentary with morning coffee, but who may not be a total loss; the dysfunctional marriage of two contributors to the order; men who just want to be protected from all the nuns. :) And, of course, the continuing lives of Gregor and his friends, and whether or not he and Bennis will ever get romantically involved.

The Very Least of Jane Haddam

I like Jane Haddam's mysteries; in general I find them to belong to the best tradition of detective fiction: difficult puzzles that a clever and wise detective can unravel with the same clues that we learn. This book does not qualify. By the end of the story there was a likely villian and only one likely villian, both in terms of events and in terms of character (which is usually Haddam's strong suit). There were no surprises in the ending. I was dismayed that so good an author could produce this story.

If you are a fan of Jane Haddam, you may want to read this for completeness. But please don't expect much from it.

A good read for whodunit lovers to try and solve as you go along and it held my interest because of the religious background. The characters were a little difficult to follow at times because so many nuns were in it. I will probably try another Haddam book for comparison before I am really hooked..

A wordy, over complicated and pedantic read. I had to read this for an Intro to Women's and Gender studies class and found it tedious. Reconstructing Gender: A Multicultural Anthology (the other reading for the class) was more thorough and created better discussion.

Not the standard feel-good paperback series, the Blue-Eyed Son trilogy takes a harrowing tour of Irish Boston's mean streets, with 15-year-old Mick as guide. Here is a world inhabited by beings one step down on the evolutionary and social scale from the bullies in Slot Machine: ignorant thugs like Mick's older brother Terry (a terrifying villain if ever there was one), whose idea of fun is to get wildly drunk and beat up non-whites; or get wildly drunk and bet on dog fights; or just get wildly drunk. In this tightly paced examination of inner-city life and race relations, Lynch treads very close to the same ground as Chris Crutcher. However, there are no hip adult role models to smooth the way for the young folks, and forget about the protagonist winding up with the girl of his dreams (although he does bed a friend's mother between titles 2 and 3). After enduring beatings, alcoholic excess and humiliations too numerous to catalogue, Mick is ultimately able to rise above his milieu, but the pervasive violence and morally ambiguous resolution make this series even more disquieting than Gypsy Davey. Grade 7-10?Fifteen-year-old Mick, disenchanted with his dysfunctional Irish-American family, leaves home and moves in with his friend Sully's family. Mick feels trapped by his abusive, obnoxious father; ineffectual mother; and Terry, his sadistic older brother. Terry's latest idea of dogfighting inspires Mick to compete with him. Finding the right dog to beat Terry's fierce canine becomes Mick's obsession, and a means of dealing with his brother's brutality. The final dogfight with Terry provides an abrupt ending to a story that has much potential but is lacking in impact due to the one-dimensional characters. While these personalities may have been better established in the first two entries in the series, YAs unfamiliar with those books will have trouble identifying with any of the characters here, including Mick, whose true nature is not revealed until the final chapter. The crisp, raw language forces readers to concentrate on the dialogue in order to comprehend the plot and the characters' motives. Lynch has proven himself to be a quality writer in Iceman and Gypsy Davey (both HarperCollins, 1994). This book is obviously a departure from that norm.?Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA

This book is great because it keeps you wondering!

In Chris Lynch's novel, Blood Relations, fifteen year old MIke, is having sibling problems while his parents are away for the weekend. The main character, Mike, is left alone with his older brother while his parents are away visiting some friends. Mike's brother throws a party for his friends every year but this year's is worse than ever! Mike wants nothing to do with it. Mike's brother goes as far as sacrificing a goat's life, and that's where Mike draws the line and leaves town before they all sober up. Mike and a couple of friends stay over night at a motel about 50 miles away. When Mike goes back, he decides to go to his best friend's house to stay until his parents get back. When his parents do come back, Mike gets a job at their bar, but he refuses to go home. Mike gets kicked out of his best friend's parent's house for starting a fire while trying to cook supper. Where can he turn now? You'll never know unless you read this book... I enjoyed this book very much! It keeps you trying to guess where he's going to go next.

This is an amazing book. It writes with shocking reality and naked insight into the mind of a teenager. Like a tough, non-poetic Francesca Lia Block or Rob Thomas.

How do you escape the prejudice of your family and friends if that is what you’ve known all your life? What if you want to shake free of this hatred, even though your own brother and you friends threaten and force you to act against your own feelings?

This is what Mick is faced with growing up in his Irish-American family in the south of Boston; Chris Lynch sketches Mick’s neighborhood as close knit to be sure, but also full of resentment against those African Americans and immigrants beginning to live in their neighborhood, and this is the web his Mick tries to escape in this first volume of Lynch’s trilogy, an intriguing comparison with James T. Farrel's classic trilogy, Studs Lonigan.
