Throughout history, Japan has been ravaged by periods of intense warfare, both civil and international, but in recent times enjoys a peace that most of the world does not. This title is more about Japan’s history of promoting and thwarting institutionalized violence than it is about the tactics, weapons, and mechanisms of Japanese warfare. A lengthy and informative introduction precedes more than 300 alphabetically arranged entries, covering people, places, and events from prehistoric times to the present. Entries are cross-referenced and contain sources for further research. Other supporting sections include chronologically arranged extracts of primary documents (translated into English), a chronology of events from 1500 BC to 2011, a glossary of terms relevant to Japanese culture (not necessarily warfare), and an extensive 22-page bibliography. In addition to an alphabetical list of entries, entries classified by era and by broad subject categories direct readers to their areas of interest. As is typical of works with a broad scope, this encyclopedia contains entries that seem to be peripherally related to its intended topic. The main entries emphasize developments from the latter part of the nineteenth century to the aftermath of WWII, while the chronology of events is more detailed after 1990. Although most of the entries are clear and concise, some are quite academic and may be out of reach for the general reader. This work does encourage readers to read about war more broadly—specifically, in the context of Japanese warfare and Japanese outlook on armed conflict. Taken as a whole, Japan at War : An Encyclopedia shows the pacifist face of Japanese culture (during the 1600s, for instance) and its bellicose side as well (WWII).
