Healing War Trauma: A Handbook of Creative Approaches (Psychosocial Stress Series)From Routledge

Healing War Trauma details a broad range of exciting approaches for healing from the trauma of war. The techniques described in each chapter are designed to complement and supplement cognitive-behavioral treatment protocols—and, ultimately, to help clinicians transcend the limits of those protocols.

For those veterans who do not respond productively to—or who have simply little interest in—office-based, regimented, and symptom-focused treatments, the innovative approaches laid out in Healing War Trauma will inspire and inform both clinicians and veterans as they chart new paths to healing.

Review

"Think of Healing War Trauma as a counterinsurgency field manual to battle the invisible and incapacitating wounds sustained by hundreds of thousands during a decade of war. Helping these soldiers requires more than talk therapy and drugs, and the editors, both combat veterans and mental-health professionals, offer an exciting array of creative and complementary treatments―and hope―in this handbook."

―Ann Gerhart, senior writer, The Washington Post

"This shining gem belongs on the desk of all who seek to heal war trauma. Confronting the complexities of the wounded soul reminds us of the need to broaden the scope of treatment strategies. Clearly, one size does not fit all, and this book opens our minds to possibilities. The chapter on resolving combat-related guilt is alone worth the trip to the bookstore. A beautiful blend of theory and practice."

―Glenn R. Schiraldi, PhD, Lt. Col. (USAR, Ret.), author of The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Sourcebook and The Resilient Warrior Before, During, and After War

"Therapist/veterans Scurfield and Platoni are among our most experienced practitioners in the treatment of the psychological traumas of war, and their knowledge has been hard-won in both the clinic and on the battlefield. Here they take an eclectic and pragmatic look at therapeutic alternatives to trauma treatment. This is not only an essential work for health-care professionals, it is an accessible must-read for those seeking to understand the challenges faced by thousands of veterans."

―Barry Goldstein, MD, PhD, author of Gray Land: Soldiers on War and associate professor at the University of Rochester

"Meeting Veterans Where They Are"
By Christopher Zaglifa
Charles W. Hoge, MD (2011)described the need to conceptualize PTSD in a much broader context. This is the premise behind Scurfield and Platoni's second volume on combat trauma,"Healing War Trauma: A Handbook of Creative Approaches." As a trauma therapist struggling with finding ways to help veterans return to civilian life after serving in combat zones, from WWII to our more recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, one finds that there is no "one size fits all intervention." Although Evidence-Based Therapies (EBT) have advanced the field of trauma therapy, there is a need for creative approaches that address the needs of service members and veterans who do not respond to EBT's, and those who have issues that are outside the realm of of EBT's. These approaches can enhance the effectiveness of EBT's; their development is an absolute if we want to meet the needs of those suffering from PTSD. I had very high expectations for this, their second volume as Scurfield and Platoni set a very high bar for themselves with the previous book.

My first impression, looking at the table of contents, was that there were chapters in which I would have little interest. Ever since reading this volume this impression proved to be grossly in error. Not only did every chapter teach me a little more about war trauma, together, they also opened my eyes to issues that veterans were experiencing that were not being addressed. The chapter on how survival modes are lifesaving in combat zones but create conflict at home adapted easily to individual, group, and couple therapy, providing veterans and their families a crucial understanding of behaviors like checking roads for IEDs, and "why I act the way I do." The chapter on Healing Through Activism gives a therapist structure to approach preparing a Vet who has such aspirations. Ways to welcome and culturally accept service members back into the community is not only covered but explained as a necessary part of reintegration and healing and very much a part of treatment. The section on Expressive-Experiential Approaches helped many veterans who could not tolerate a direct verbal discussion on their traumas, write them out, or through the use of metaphor, begin their healing process. Having personally experienced going through an ArtReach group session, there is no doubt in my mind how powerful the transformation is that occurs with this approach. The mind body approaches covered in the book are being researched with promising findings. While mindfulness is finding its way into mainstream treatment, the chapter on hypnotherapy peaks one's interest as being employed as a controlled form of dissociation in a structured fashion. Many veterans are inquiring about various animal assisted therapies which is covered in such a manner that a therapist can carry on an educated discussion on how these approaches can help. There are several chapters on the latest technology that keeps therapists on the cutting edge and have at least a familiarity with these approaches as they will come up in sessions from veterans. The last three chapters on "Other Creative Approaches" were some of the most helpful, direct, and concrete interventions that prepares a therapist for some of the most common and difficult issues facing veterans. Resolving Combat-Related Guilt is an approach that speaks to veterans in a manner that is real to them and consistent with what they are experiencing internally. Spirituality is another part of a person's life that is very vulnerable to damage and destruction, needing evaluation and healing as with any PTSD symptom. The chapter on returning to the work world was of immediate benefit as many veterans do seek counseling on preparing for a return to the workplace, the challenges, changes, and obstacles they may face, and may seek a recommendation. Vets have asked for references from therapists and this chapter was very helpful in that regard.

'Healing War Trauma" opened my eyes, mind, and heart to issues crucial to veterans that I had not considered before. I have seen the knowledge and wisdom found in this book to be effective with not only veterans but any person who has experienced the devastation and disruption in one's life following a major trauma. For this, I am deeply indebted to Scurfield and Platoni for they truly delivered in a practical and very useful manner.
