intersting subject, could have been better

It was a good read, albeit a bit sophomoric. When the book ended I thought it was just getting started. a bit of a disappointment. It could have been a great slice of a unique history, but it turned out to be more of a personal family history, not what I thought it was going to be...

Boiring, irrelevant.

The narration is boring. It tells how the gangsters were killing each other in chronological sequence, then ratted each other to the authorities. The author has problems with basic historic facts: he does not know when the Yalta conference happened, and even makes a mistake dating the USA entrance in the WWII. I can only guess what a mess he had made of the less known history of the American underworld. His often-repeated claim that producing some gangsters somehow made Jews "more American" is ridiculous and it is debunked by the very contents of the book. If you want to learn about real "tough Jews," read about Israeli pioneers, WWII Jewish resistance fighters and Soviet refuseniks - lots of material there. The author's reminiscences about his fathers' generation and the New York of old has some value: it is warm and endearing, but, again, repetitive and rather poorly written.
