Discover an adventure

In my opinion, this book deserves a big, fat five stars. The author begins his story in April of 1975, a fresh ecologist on his first mission. The way he tells his story is both eye-opening and refreshing. The voice he uses is relaxed and easy to read and doesn’t feel like it came from a case study or textbook. I have heard bits and pieces about what conservationists and other individuals go through when they are in the wilds of our planet, but never read anything that was so detailed, at times hilarious and overall compelling on the subject as this book. The portion of the book that details riding an elephant is fabulous; I now want to try it.
As the book progresses, you get the sense that these are the kind of once in a lifetime adventures we all have on our own bucket lists. The things this author experienced during the time period he writes about almost sound as though they came straight from an adventure movie, and yet they really happened.
To witness someone speaking about the people, places and things they have seen in faraway lands is always second best to having the experience yourself, but through the excellent writing, vivid details and his recollections, this author almost made me feel like I was recalling something I had lived through right alongside him. Eric Dinerstein has given us a book about wildlife, culture and unforgettable experiences that is both entertaining and educational. I highly recommend it.
As a bonus, this book was published by Island Press. For those of you who are not familiar with this press, they are a non-profit organization that has been around since 1984. They publish about 40 titles per year and are dedicated to making sense of this planet and solving environmental problems. So, you can feel great about purchasing a title from this press.

#1 gift choice for Peace Corps/Nepal veterans

Eric Dinerstein presents two personal essays in this book. Although they are good examples of the form, their presentation here is not satisfying, a fault I lay squarely on the editors at Island Press.
This book is a #1 gift choice for anyone who knows Nepal and especially Peace Corps/Nepal in that era. I showed it to a former Peace Corps/Nepal Country Director who is now trying to get autographed hard copies for various libraries in Nepal and as gifts to veteran Peace Corps/Nepal language teachers and volunteers.
For outsiders, though, there is not enough framing material about Dinerstein's life and Himalayan cats. Island Press should flesh out these bare-bones essays with maps, species lists, drawings, and other information that general interest readers appreciate.

Discovering big cat country

This is a good fun read as well as a serious, informative and well-described book about wild environments and big cat predators. The author went to Nepal in 1975 as a field biologist and straight away encountered hardships from roads blocked by avalanche to rats and snakes in his sleeping hut.
The tigers were at times closer than expected and at other times too shy to be seen. The way to count them turned out to be by counting numbers and types of prey animals. When the Nepalese Army started patrolling the jungle park in 1976 the poaching of tigers and prey stopped and the populations recovered.
After this tale of getting on with local people and how the gharial crocodiles were saved from extinction - hungry villagers used to steal their eggs - the author then moves to a later site where he tracked snow leopards, reflecting that Peter Matthiessen didn't get to see one.
Eric Dinerstein is now Lead Scientist and Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund (Worldwide Fund for Nature) in the US. There are many research methods and terms used in the book, explained in all too dirty detail, so even the non-scientific reader can follow. Sadly it is a short read which I understand was cut down from a larger book.
