Review
As a people and nation, we consistently invest in Yellowstone science, as the wildlife populations wax and wane and as the climate changes, migrations are allowed or prevented, wolves are eliminated and restored, and invasive species of animals and plants press in. Translation of this science into twenty-?rst century stewardship is the intent of the present volume. The information is timeless and valuable beyond measure. (from the Foreword by E. O. Wilson)

This book summarizes a massive quantity of ecological research in the longest-running natural management experiment in American history, Yellowstone National Park. (L. Leann Kanda Choice 2013-12-01)

Excellent book... used it for a college class. Approaches the subject from a scientific perspective.

Impressive review of what we know, and its implications for park policy
By Arthur Digbee
As the title suggests, this book addresses Yellowstone’s wildlife populations in a time of rapid change. they emphasize stressors such as climate change, human development outside the park, and non-native species in the park. It examines a wide range of species, though inevitably gives more attention to the most visible ones. It is also well organized. After some background material, the chapters move to individual species, then ecosystem and landscape-level processes, then connect to the wider world by discussing non-native species.

These chapters are largely review essays, not original science. (The authors draw on their own original science, often published in the peer-reviewed literature.) It is written for an audience interested in conservation biology, but it is also accessible to a general audience. Though the authors explain their concepts, you probably need to be someone who already knows concepts like “recruitment,” “trophic cascade” or “natural disturbance processes” in order to read this book comfortably.

Each chapter connects its review to the conservation implications of the threats identified. Can managers do anything about the problems, and if so, what?

There are two clear limitations of this project. First, many of the contributors work for the park or the National Park Service, and most of the rest have collaborated with those who do. This is a group of scientific insiders, and you won’t see them providing strong criticisms of any of the park’s policies. They don’t have ideological blinders, but they are people who have taken scientific positions in the past and present, and they will be sticking with those decisions in the future.

Second, since they are mostly government employees they are focused on addressing the symptoms (like the effects of climate change on whitebark pine) instead of addressing the root causes (a carbon-based energy economy). I wouldn’t expect them to approach the problem differently, but critical readers will want to keep in mind that some problems are not part of their field of vision.

All in all, it’s an impressive contribution that both specialists and the committed lay reader will want on their bookshelves.

Yellowstone's Tangled Bank
By Ecologist
A must-read book for anyone interested in ecological relationships in Yellowstone National Park. Contains chapters by a diverse range of top-caliber scientists on topics that have received considerable scrutiny in Yellowstone over the years, such as the condition of the Northern Range, the effects of wolves, predator-prey relationships, and how climate change is affecting all of these relationships.
