About the Author
Amy J. L. Baker, Ph.D., is the author of Adult Children of Parental Alienation Syndrome: Breaking the Ties That Bind, as well as over 65 peer-reviewed publications on the topic of parental alienation, psychological maltreatment, child welfare, and parent–child relationships. She conducts research at the Vincent J. Fontana Center for Child Protection.
S. Richard Sauber, Ph.D., has been in practice for 30 years as a forensic family and clinical psychologist. He is certified in Family and Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and licensed by the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec, Canada. He has also been the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Family Therapy since 1976.

thin on treatment protocol

As a target parent for over five years now, I anxiously awaited and pre-ordered this book. I see the single biggest problem I face in getting the court to recognize and stop alienation is that there is no agreed upon protocol for treating the problem. The judge is inclined to try to ignore alienation because a reliable proven solution cannot be presented; she will look to label the problem as a high-conflict divorce and reserve judgment on "He said, she said" . I believe judge's would be more willing if the only "proven" method did not entail removal from custody for at least six months and an expensive deprogramming in Texas.
Unlike Ms. Baker's previous book, this is not devoid of treatment protocols, but it amounts to maybe twenty pages. The most useful appears to be Linda Gottleib's description of two scenarios and how they were handled. Where can I get more of this specific treatment information? We have many books describing the problem but not much on what to do. I need this so that I can attempt to educate a therapist to try to help me save my children. Yes we know the wrong therapist can make the problem worse (I have hired several of them) but what exactly are the therapeutic choices. We need a book that is very specific and complete, as if you were trying to give a therapist a blueprint on attacking the problem. If there is only one effective therapist in any large geographic area, how can you expect a target parent to arrange for the court to allow such a person to treat the family? Am I expected to get the court to arrange for me to travel several hours with severely alienated children to meet with such a person? Not likely. Ms. Baker needs to realize that she has to provide the training so that the possible cure can spread, and quickly.

Power is knowing

This book has a lot of information which is intended for professionals working with families where a parent has been rejected by his or her child. As a parent who's child has fully rejected me this book does answer a lot of questions, but more importantly it shows how really one only needs to change the names as the PA narrative is consistently predictable.
There are a few contributors who hit the nail on the head when they recognize that there is a psychological pathology present which is causing the symptoms of PA. Other contributors seem to focus a lot on non-clinical indicators which feels good to read but are frustrating to know because nothing can be done unless the judge or mediator are observing it personally. It takes someone qualified to recognize the presences or absence of personality disorders to make real changes, and even then this qualified person must be ordered to report. This book does offer several indicator tools but they are really worthless if they are not clinically accepted and they are too easily dispelled by a skilled attorney.
This book is missing "Pathogenic Parenting" coined by Dr. Craig Childress. Dr. Childress is the only one that seems to get this PA thing right. I strongly encourage you; both targeted parents and professionals working with this special class of high-conflict cases to google Dr. Childress, watch his videos, and read everything. For targeted parents don't be afraid to fight anymore. Fight like your children's lives depend on it because their future does. This is not about spending time with your children, this is about saving your children from a life of abuse which will trickle through the generations of their offspring and surface throughout their entire lives.
I hope that one day the court system will adopt a litmus test for affirming or disproving the presence of psychopathologically organized parents to prevent further child abuse. As Dr. Childress says, this is a child protection problem and not a custody problem.
Read this book. It will not hurt, you need to know the indicators, but do not take it as gospel.
